There are Four Truths Four Truths given by God and proclaimed by the priests. They are the foundation of all life inside and outside of the Spire. They keep everyone in their place as is proper before God.
Sharn doesn’t care about Truths. He only cares about begging or stealing enough to survive. He knows the stories; how the world had collapsed and all of society had moved to the great Spires to survive. He knows that he will never rise up the levels. He knows the Truths will keep him where he is. Everything changes when a desperate plan for food goes awry and Sharn is forced to fight for his life. The head of the Spire Guard witnesses the fight and takes Sharn to the Insula—an exclusive school where young boys are trained to fight for sport. Within the Insula's confines, Sharn learns to fight, tries to learn balance, and discovers that the priests' Four Truths are mere fragments of a grander narrative. There are three further truths that have been hidden from everyone, and a remnant of people who believe that God doesn’t just want people to stay in their place. As he navigates conflicting loyalties and battles his own doubts, Sharn must decide where he truly belongs and whether he dares to embrace the profound revelations of the Further Truths
Gosh I love this story. Further Truths by Shane Yancey introduces us to the life of a pre-teen boy struggling to survive on his own in a post-apocalyptic world. Instantly, we’re rooting for Sharn — from battling on the streets to fighting in the Octagon, and all the internal conflicts in-between. I quickly became unexpectedly invested in the characters and the heart of this kid who is learning that living is more than surviving.
Shane Yancey is excellent at character development. The progression of the story kept me eager to return to reading, but the characters were what I thought about when I was away. Sharn’s encounters with new friends, mentors and soon-to-be enemies made my heart race. I found myself walking through my day worried about whether Sharn would truly be accepted, or find himself alone again.
It does take a couple beginning chapters to pull Sharn out of his life in the Outers, to where he ends up at the Insula. If you’re not a fan of “fight scenes”, the first two chapters might move slowly for you, but DON’T GIVE UP! There will be no more weasidillos and the whole book isn’t actually about fighting. Plus you’re about to meet my favorite character, Cricket. So hang in there, it’s worth it!
Further Truths fits the Teen & Young Adult Fiction category well. However, I’m an adult (not a young one), and I really enjoyed the easy read and engaging plot. I’ll be recommending it to the middle and high school students I know. In fact, I’ll be recommending it to everyone. It really is a great story.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Further truths. How many of us have thought we knew all there was to know about the way things are? Sharn is told there are only four truths of God, and they all say that everyone is where they are in life because that is the way God wants it. Stay in line. That’s just the way things are.
But as it is with God, there is more. Sharn is driven to a dangerous situation due to his hunger. Little did he know it would be a hunger for more food that leads him to a life he never could have imagined. A life with a hunger for more knowledge. He learns there is more to God than he could have imagined.
Through balance and the discovery of more truths, Sharn is on a journey to learn that there is more to his life than the “uppers” lead him, and the rest of society, to believe. He may be training for physical battles, but he is also learning truths that open his world to spiritual battles.
Where will these truths lead him and his fellow trainees? The journey begins. And it all starts with balance.
I'm not sure young adults would be the best age group for this one but definitely teens. I found it interesting and quick moving. Sharn lives in a futuristic earth, well-created, where his main goal is survival. Then he finds himself faced with another option which includes a better way to survive. The story contains a lot of fighting and moves quickly.
