M/M first-time, ofy, magic/fantasy romance The writing style is bizarre. The POV shifts randomly which can be confusing. And it aims for a formal, conservative and classical style but then the sex scenes seem to be written by someone else entirely! They are in contrast full of modern and raunchy references with awful terms like man-meat, dank hole and comments about male breeding. It was quite off putting.
The world building was a page out of the Lord of the Rings. There is a great evil, monsters and the requisite quest. The slight difference is that elemental magic is mysteriously bestowed on a select few humans by capricious divine powers! Not well explained at all.
Noah is a young farmer whose life is turned upside down when he learns his real lineage. He is guided by his grandmother, Selena, on this quest. The plot is overly simplistic with tedious declarations that just make things happens because they will it so. You can apparently overcome anything if you just think you have a strong enough connection to your grandmother! Or after a single kiss with Liam, it is just normal to consider him your lover! It’s that type of over dramatization.
This is also a homophobic world yet there was an oversimplified solution to Noah’s forced marriage situation that turned into this strange outing/blessing that contradicts the general narrative.
I was tempted to DNF this multiple times. It ends on HFN and I will certainly not read any more in this series.
Elemental: Forgotten Heritage is the debut novel of C.G. Macington. It is the first book in the Elemental series. Overall, I enjoyed the story. What I liked about it were the characters, the plot, the heat level, and the use of magic. I thought the writing style needed work, lots of head-hopping or POV slips, telling versus showing, and using Astro projection when it was more like teleporting. But overall, if you can see past needing to know whose POV is telling the story, then it is a great start to a new series. One that I will continue to read because I want to see what happens next. I enjoyed the chemistry between Liam and Noah and their camaraderie with Enwa. I look forward to seeing how they handle the battle with the King and the corruption that comes from the King's interaction with demons.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I received a free copy of this book as part of a review service I subscribe to, however this did not impact my opinion of the novel or my review itself. I really enjoyed the story overall, and even though I'm not typically a fan of fantasy I still found that the action was sprinkled throughout evenly. The main character Noah became very likeable almost immediately, and his relationship with Liam seemed to flow naturally. The later spicey scenes in the book made the initial slow pacing more than worthwhile. I also found the Elven scenes to be well done, and made me go deeper into the story overall. While it's not perfect, for a first book from this author I really found the story compelling and well written. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
I was recommended this book by a friend and I am so glad I got the chance to read it! Noah's development throughout the story both with his powers and his intimacy with Liam was thrilling. I enjoyed the spicy scenes and the story spoke to my nerdy heart. If you like fantasy, elves, demonic kings and tragedy with some sexy scenes, you'll like this book! I would definitely recommend to others!!
This is a new to me author and from what I can see it’s their debut novel as well, I enjoyed this story and l liked the fantasy world the author was introducing in this the first book of the debut series, it was good reading how Noah learns about his powers and how to use them and also his relationship with Liam and I’m looking forward to reading more in the next book from this debut series.
The story plot was interesting, and it felt like it had potential; however, the writing style and repetition of concepts and words did not allow me to immerse myself into the narrative. It had the vague feeling of being a written assignment where the author needed to increase the word count so kept adding to it without actually advancing the storyline.
