Although stalking is an age-old phenomenon, it is only recently receiving due attention. In a span of just ten years, all fifty states have passed anti-stalking legislation. For the first time, Stalking Crimes and Victim Prevention, Intervention, Threat Assessment, and Case Management brings together in one source all the research done by professionals in various fields since 1990. It covers all the angles, from the psychological aspects of stalkers to the legal ramifications of stalking.
This comprehensive work emphasizes a multidisciplinary concept and approach. It compiles and assesses studies of law enforcement, legal counsel, medical professionals, forensic mental health professionals, security personnel, and criminologists. These authors combine their academic research and clinical knowledge to provide you with helpful guidelines and suggestions in the areas of victim assistance and predatory stalking
I've managed a few interesting stalking cases over the past couple of years, and although each instance was successfully resolved, I felt that I needed a deeper understanding of the problem. The ATAP Body of Knowledge and the CTM exam only touched on stalking at a surface level.
At over 500 pages, this was a heavy slog, and the fact that many of the psychologists who contributed to this collection of essays were clumsy writers at best did not exactly enhance the reading experience. I put this one down a few times, but kept coming back.
Although the contributions by the shrinks were generally in desperate need of an editor or a ghostwriter, the core content did provide useful insights. The contributions by law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys was much better written in general, and more practical in content, focused on intervention and case management. I definitely found the latter half of the book to provide a much greater value.
Overall, I would only recommend this if your professional life requires you to work with stalking victims. And given my experience with this one, I may eventually find a better broad ranging volume put together by a group of professionals who are better at putting words together. If that happens, I'll stick this one in some neighborhood's little library.
