FBI Special Agent Cass Cosay is taking time off from fighting crime when he finds himself thrown into a dangerous situation. He sees Dylan Scott, a fellow resident in the Casa Pacific apartments, being attacked and threatened with abduction. Cass jumps into action and comes to her rescue. And there’s that dog fighting ring Dylan insists on investigating, and the mysterious criminal who shows up on a regular basis at her accounting firm. Dylan attracts trouble, and Cass is determined to keep her safe. He gets help from apartment manager Logan Reid. This mystery with a spoonful of romance and a love of horses is a fast and compelling stand-alone story, and #2 in the Iron Horse Mystery series.

This Iron Horse Mystery unfolds in Tucson, Arizona. The story begins at Casa Pacifica which is a small apartment building where the main characters live. They have weekly Sunday night pot luck dinners. Cass who was an FBI Agent and an Apache tribal member saves another resident, Dylan Scott from being abducted after three men attack her. Intricately plot holding the reader mesmerized from the first word until the final word. The reader is brought into the story through the vivid, detailed descriptions throughout the book. You will find suspense, smugglers, shootings, drug arrests, dog fighting and a touch of romance. You will ride by horseback and enjoy the scenery though the eyes of the characters. I volunteered to read Shadow Man. Thanks to the Cozy Mystery Review Club for the opportunity.
In my opinion Shadow Man, book #2 in the Iron Horse Mysteries series is as good as book #1 was or maybe even a little bit better! You don't need to read the first book to enjoy this one. The main characters live in a small apartment building called Casa Pacifica in Tucson, Az. where the residents have become family to each other. They have their weekly Sunday night pot- luck dinners where the catch up on the happenings in everyone's lives. In Shadow Man the main focus is on Cass, a FBI Special Agent and Apache tribal member and Dylan Scott, a fellow resident and their budding romance while being attacked and threatened with abduction and getting involved in trying to shut down a dog fighting ring.
This is the second book in the Iron Horse mystery series and it was even more intense than book 1. Lots of action and suspense with mystery and romance. This book focuses on 2 other characters who were in the previous book and found out they had a lot in common. Abductions, shoot outs, and lots of Sunday night potlucks make for an engaging and well planned mystery. I'm curious to see where the author will take us in the next installment of the series.
Shadow Man is the second book in the Iron Horse Series. Author, CJ Shane has brought back most of the original characters from "Take Four", and added a Native American FBI agent to the mix. Investigative trainee, Frankie Miranda, from "Letty Valdez" series adds to the drama. It's interesting when an author can seamlessly incorporate figures from one series into another - like a real community that you can relate to. I appreciate Shane's character descriptions - the people are easily identifyable and easy to remember. Taking place in Tucson, AZ, she incorporates several of the cultures that make up it's population. Adding landmarks and describing ethnic customs adds to this fast paced, inticing mystery. I received this copy as part of the ARC program and am looking forward to reading the next installment!
This is the second book in this series; I also read and enjoyed the first book, but this book can stand alone well. This book feels very authentic, set in a historical area of Tucson, Arizona. A huge mansion was converted into apartments, Casa Pacifica, and the residents have close, family-type relationships, getting together for frequent potlucks and celebrations; helping the manager, Logan, a widower and grad student/teaching assistant, with his young son; and even budding romances. This book focuses a lot on 2 residents: Cass, a Native American (male) FBI agent, and Dylan, a female tattoo artist turned CPA, as they develop a relationship. The book seems pretty realistic with its grittier aspects of crime, as Cass works to keep Dylan safe. The book is absorbing and a great read. I can definitely recommend this book and series; I was provided an arc, which I really appreciate, but these opinions are my own.
I loved this second book in the series, maybe even more than the first one! I like how the author has continued the cast of characters from book 1, but added in someone new. Cass is a former FBI agent and Native American. I think the FBI part adds some edginess to the story, and the Apache part adds diversity.
This time around there is plenty of action, as the residents of a Tuscon apartment complex come together for fun, adventure, and crime solving. There's always something exciting happening. With so many regular characters, the author does an amazing job of making each one stand out as an individual.
The plot is great. Detailed but still logical. I enjoyed trying to figure everything out along with the characters. I highly recommend this author and series!
Thank you to The Review Crew and the author for providing me with a review copy.
This is the second book in the Iron Horse Mystery series by C. J. Shane. The story revolves around FBI Special Agent Cass Cosay and Dylan Scott, residents of Casa Pacific apartments, managed by Logan Reid.
There is a side story concerning Logan, his 5 year old son, Charlie, and Zoey.
Ms. Shane does a great job of weaving the plotlines together and converging them in the end. She also tries to provide a happy ending in each book in this series.
I enjoy learning about Tucson and the culture throughout the city. This series revolves around the university district and surrounding neighborhoods.
The author provides a link for Calexico’s music at the end of the book. This is a local group that has a good following.
Incredible fast paced mystery with engaging characters you feel like you know and a well crafted story I couldn't put down from the first word to the last. Looking forward to catching up with the Casa Pacific residents in book three of this must read series. I received an advance reader copy of Shadow Man and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Shadow Man is a well-crafted story. In book 2 of the Iron Horse Mystery series, we get to know the characters more as they get to know each other better. I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion.
