Silas has every reason to turn his back on humanity. Life and humans have oppressed him. Rather than lash out, he moves to another village and lives a quiet life as a weaver. He keeps his head down on the loom and does not associate with other humans other than to sell his goods and accumulate wealth. Even though he minds his own business, he once again becomes the victim of crime by the lowest scum of the earth. This incident leads him to finding a toddler whose mother has died and he is instantly protective and loving to this child. Eppie brings him the joy, companionship, and love that he has been missing his entire life. Through all the relationships in the book, the truth finally prevails and Silas is proven innocent of any wrongdoing.
