Throw a Seven follows seventeen souls as they set sail from the port of Haldia, India, in 1853, bound for a new life in a new land. They have come from Calcutta with the Nobab, a gruff but fair employer. They are leaving behind their old lives to join other settlers in New Zealand, hoping for a brighter future.
Among the new arrivals is smart, devious Angelina. She is escaping the shame of her mixed heritage, determined not to live in poverty. Angelina casts a single die, inherited from her father, to help decide her fate.

A lovely little book. Thirty short stories set over thirty years, with interlinked characters, showing life as new immigrants in Christchurch NZ from 1853, including Indians, often missing from history.
I loved coming across a character from a previous story, and working out how they all connected.
