Cute and wholesome. I’m sorry we’re coming up on the final season of the show. It’s been a delightful series, if you haven’t watched it Do Not snub it for being a cartoon if you’re an adult fantasy reader. It’s one of my all time favorite series for the strength of the story and characters.

Little brothers can really be a pain, but when your little brother is the heir to the kingdom, things can be even more annoying as everyone expects YOU to be the good brother and watch over the young prince. But, Callum IS a good son and brother and the two are always to be found in each other's company. And so, the recent loss of a friend has the King on a diplomatic mission and the two princes are accompanying him as a chance to give them both more exposure into Prince Ezran's future duties as King. It's during this trip that Callum begins to realize that his brother has a certain affinity with animals, including an ability to bond with even the most potentially dangerous. And it's that burgeoning ability that will become the most critical in solving the mystery of the strange events that are ravaging the city they have come to visit.

Scholastic once more dives into the world of the DRAGON PRINCE with its 4th graphic novel set in that universe. This reads as the earliest in the time line. These books specifically state that they are Canon and tell the tales of Callum and Ezran as they grow to become the King and Mage that awaits them in the future. The elements introduced in this story reinforce those shown in the animated series, though Ezran's abilities with regard to his ability to speak with all creatures are presented in a vastly different way here. Not a big deal, but makes sense when you realize that the book is intended for younger readers and so is much more straightforward in that presentation.

I wish I enjoyed it more. near the climax, I put the graphic novel down for the day and didn't come back to it for a few weeks after that, even though I realistically only had about 15 pages left. callum's acceptance of ezran's affinity for animals seemed incredibly out of place because the graphic novel is set prior to s1, in which callum is still skeptical. also, ezran seemed far too wise and well-spoken for his age.

on the good side of things, it was cute to see the formation of the jerkface dance, the creature designs were solid, and the overall art style was consistently good.

Ik wil meer gepraat zien tussen Ezran en allerlei dieren. Hopelijk is daar nog wat van in de laatste twee seizoenen (die ik dus nog niet heb gezien)

This was so cute, I love these brothers so much😭

The fact that the Standing Battalion is there yet we don’t get a young!Corvus cameo is a TRAGEDY. Maybe this means we’ll actually get his backstory someday, maybe he genuinely wasn’t there yet.

ANYWAY. Younger Gren is precious.

Season 7 technically comes out NEXT WEEK! Can’t wait to see how much more of this graphic novel makes me want to cry afterward.

High three stars. This was a bit of a mixed bag for TDP graphic novels.

This one is still a good addition to the series that doesn’t need to be read to understand anything in the show, which is always good. And it was cool to get to see some characters when they were younger (the Crowmaster’s singular panel was a highlight of the book). But that’s about where my praise of this story ends.
The general plot was very strange and a bit confusing. I’m not even sure I can accurately explain it. But to add to that, instead of using one of the ten billion creatures introduced in Tales of Xadia, we get not one, but possibly THREE one-off creatures that exist solely for the plot of this story and will never be seen again. (I say three because of the Dream Warden, the bat thing, and the deer thing. We’ve already seen banthers, so I’m not counting that, and I don’t care if they’re technically all the Dream Warden. That didn’t make sense so I’m counting them as separate creatures.) For a world that often feels tiny in scope, Xadia (the continent) sure has a lot of species seemingly populated by only one creature.

And the characters felt weird and off. Ezran was unbelievably preachy in this book. Like, he irked me more than he does now in the second arc of the show. He is like 5 in this story. WHY IS HE SO ANNOYING. Not to mention, Ezran’s animal ability is so unbelievably obvious that it makes everyone around him seem stupid for not realizing it, especially because the way his powers work has been retconned now. Apparently, he DOES actually speak to them, instead of the more interesting, logical, and already stated method of understanding their emotions and feelings, with more general ideas of what they’re actually saying. And of course Callum feels out of character for almost the whole thing. It was cute to see how the jerk face dance came to be, but I didn’t need his personality sacrificed for the whole story to get that. Callum in this book felt more like Sokka than himself, to the point where I wonder if the writers got their Jack De Sena characters confused.

In addition, the art wasn’t quite as good as in the last two releases, in my opinion. Most of the frames were still done well, but Harrow’s eyes are blue for the last few pages, and it is very obvious that the artist does not know how to draw horses and the colorist doesn’t know how to shade them. Any frame that had horses in it was visually distracting because they looked so unfinished in comparison to everything else. There were also a few noticeable smaller errors, again mostly related to the horses. Stirrups appear and disappear between frames, and the horses’ eyes are black holes. Also, Bait’s color changes are done with a weird overlay airbrush effect instead of just an actual color change. None of this is awful, especially when the rest of the art is up to the usual standard, but it’s definitely a downgrade from the last few releases, which is disappointing.

Definitely a bit disappointing overall, especially after last year’s release (Puzzle House) was such a strong addition to the lore.

Very cute as usual but pretty much more of what we got before

We finally get a Callum and Ezran focuses story after getting a Rayla and Claudia/Soren story. I have to say the set up here is pretty great. We get young Callum and Ezran at a strife in their brotherhood whilst they arrive at a town struck with eternal sleep

The mystery is well setup and they utilise Ezran's ability to talk to animals really well here. The animal companions were fun and had real importance to the narrative. The art especially for the later scenes is really well visualised and deserves extra credit for it's creature designs.

I felt as the undertext about the two mourning their mother came out of nowhere and didn't really relate to the Central physical conflict in a metaphorical or literal way at all. This is an issue the comics aside from Puzzle house struggle with. They desperately want to write stories where the inner conflict is personified of manifests within their physical antagonist to create a conflict rooted in characterisation however these comics just aren't well plotted out enough to tackle extreme depth or thematic undertones. I hope one day these comics can achieve that because there's hints of good stuff here.

The comic was a quick read and I liked the illustrations, as well as the characters acting in character. There were a few elements that did feel out of place in this world. For example, the way they portrayed the talking animals. I felt they anthropomorphized the animals to act like people too much, especially the rat. In The Dragon Prince it's mostly shown dragons are anthropomorphized like people, not really the other magical creatures as much. I just felt the rat was out of place in the universe. Unless he shows up in the show, which I doubt. I also didn't understand why the bat, deer, and banthor cub combined into a single animal in the end. Maybe I missed something. I just felt it didn't feel quite like the same Xadia in the show. Maybe elements in this book will appear in the show, I just felt it didn't capture the same aesthetic 100%.

I loved this book so much
I loved seeing so much of Ezran and Callum and how they handled the whole mystery of the Dream Warden.I was so satisfied with everything and the feeling to see young Callum and Ezran and to also make connections near the end of the book and make connections to Seasons 6&7 of Dragon Prince which mean a lot I love making connections when it comes to graphic novels and the show so when I find a connection between the two I keep it and hold it tight.I truly and deeply loved this book very much it meant/means a lot to me to see Callum and Ezran like this struggling together, annoying each, and being mad at each other but forgiving each other in the end(connection to Season 7 Episode 9) I just adore Callum and Ezrans brother-ship so mg so reading this and seeing that relationship as they go from annoying each other to forgiving each other really got to me

I am happy I read this, and sad that it is the last book of the graphic novels.

We get another prequel story and I ate it up! I was happy to get a glimpse at the story of the raccoons and the waterfall. We also get to see Harrow again as well as actually see Ezran communicate with animals!

I am now waiting for the final season of The Dragon Prince and I am not ready for this to all be over already. However, I am going to get the Dragon Prince novels so I can read those when I miss all these characters.

It was cute to see a young Ezra again. It made me sad to think about how vengful he is at the end of the last season when talking towards Runaan (which I get because life trauma but forgiveness has always been a huge part of Ezra's character and I always found it startling even though it is very on point with being human).

it makes me still wonder where Ezra gets his powers from and why he can do what he can do. I really hope that the next season being crowd funded is just as amazing as the past have been. I also hope we keep getting graphic novels.

A flashback to young Callum and Ezran as they attempt to solve a sleeping sickness that only seems to affect adults. Cute, and it's nice to see how far the pair's relationship has come compared to now. I do think the additional of all the little fluffy animals is a bit of artifical padding, but it works out fine in the end. Art's nice too. I don't expect this one will get referenced anywhere in the series like Bloodmoon Huntress and Puzzle House were, but you never know.

Fun standalone fantasy story (even though it's part of a series) middle grade graphic novel mystery. The king and his young princes are investigating a strange storm/magic that causes the adults in a town to fall into a deep sleep. Slightly spooky but also silly as the young prince can talk to animals, who have a lot of opinions and are mostly helpful. Great themes on brotherly love and support. Kids liked this one - we should keep an eye out for the others in this series.

While this was a fun addition to the lore, I felt it was the weakest of the graphic novels. It just wasn't as polished as the others in this series. The art had much less movement to it and sometimes the scene changes were a little too jarring. Overall it could have been better but it was a fun romp nonetheless.

I love this series, world, relationships, and characters. This one mainly focused on Callum and Ezran and showed Ez’s ability to talk to animals in a fun way. It was awesome having a prequel story with the brothers.

This book works best if you have seen at least the first season of the show and thus have some familiarity with the characters. story takes place before the series and focuses on the relationship between Callum, Ezran, and Harrow.

After getting pre-show adventures for young Rayla and young Claudia and Soren, it’s nice to finally get one for young Callum and Ezran too! Them kind of learning to be better brothers to each other (okay, mostly Callum) was very sweet. And I liked the disturbed dream spirit storyline.

My only question is the scarf. Callum doesn’t seem to have his iconic red scarf yet in this story, BUT the mayor of the town seems to have a red scarf that looks eerily similar? I thought FOR SURE the story would end with the mayor gifting it to Callum for some reason, but that never happened! What is the significance of this????

I like that all these are side stories and prequels that don't require being caught up on the show. Exran and Callum have to solve a mystery when the adults are out of commission. It was great seeing the early potential in these characters. Enjoyed the story and art.

-both Ezran and Callum act too old for their age and a bit off
-out of all the graphic novels this was least planned into the story. All the other ones share the background of something that was briefly mentioned. It doesn’t really feel cannon
