Game of Castles

Rate this book
Survive, Adventure, Rule, Conquer and eventually, Settle!

Adam lived paycheck to paycheck, earning a contract that'd finally change everything. After a skydive gone wrong, he endures an Isekai by the Creator Herself, entering a land of myth and magic to compete in the Game of Castles where individuals are constantly challenged.

As one of a hundred Champions, he can level through feats and quests, unlocking the power of the Gods. Tolmeria is not for the faint of heart. The land is infested with monsters, foul magic, and evil people. The civilized societies prey on the weak, elevate the nobility, and the most powerful men amass wealth, power, and a bevy of wives. The uncivilized eat the civilized with abandon.

Within the muck, a sliver of hope shines in the average person just trying to survive. Adam finds solace in their plight, defiant against the odds. If he can manage to navigate the dangerous land, he may just secure their prosperity for the late game where his castles will unite the land. Thankfully, he's not alone with a bevy of talented ladies at his side.

His lovely new allies need his help, unleashing his purpose to become legendary.

If this book was a meal, it would be an enormous pile of McDonald's cheeseburgers. Is it a gourmet treat? Absolutely not.

But...there's an awful lot of it, and it's consistently fine from the first bite to the last. Some books may surprise, delight, or horrify you (sometimes all three at once), but there's no risk of that here. The book promises almost 1k pages of isekai litrpg harem, and you get exactly that: An incredibly generic protagonist whose minimal backstory has no impact on events is isekai-ed in an generic way into a generic litrpg setting where he accumulates a pretty generic harem while having generic fights in a generic fantasy setting.

I know that sounds like a pretty critical review but it really isn't. There may be no flashes of brilliance here, but there's nothing to dislike either. If you're reading this review you're probably at least open to the idea of reading some trashy isekai litrpg harem novel, and that's fine! I mean, I'm sure as hell not going to judge you.

So maybe you've got something stressful going on in your life, and you want some comforting escapism; but you're afraid that you may get a couple hundred pages in and then the writing will get terrible or it'll end on a cliffhanger or there will be some annoying plot twist or something to ruin your comfortable fun. But nope, this book is acceptable from page 1 all the way to the end, so binge in comfort.

And in the interests of fairness, I should note it's not entirely generic. The different nations don't fall into the Planet of Hats trope they easily could have. The fantasy races have some variety; props to having mouse girls and and people and not just the inevitable cat girls and elves (although it has them too). The litrpg system is nicely lightweight but still meaningful, the relationship within the harem is pleasant and loving, the protagonist is clever and avoids making dumb choices just to drive the plot forward, the prose quality is quite decent, etc. Still not enough to take my rating from "good" to "great", but does sort of underscore how perfectly acceptable this book is.

My oh my, what can I say about this omnibus? Sloss, you’ve clearly knocked it out of the park with this one. I’m begging you to please continue this series. The cliffhanger was absolutely gutting. I was gutted down the middle! I cannot say how many times I laughed during this book. The side characters were insanely funny! There’s some definite trigger warnings in this book dealing with rape… also infidelity… what Regor was doing earned him more than what he got. He was truly disgusting. There were countless small Easter eggs and I’m shocked Sloss got a tad bit politically risqué with some jokes. Me before a far right republican, well… you don’t have to worry about my side being “butt hurt” sorry Owen 😂. But there were quite a few jokes that had me going.. also, I just gotta say again the brilliance behind the side characters actually bringing so much to the table. Not only were adams harem pretty active in different arcs you could say some more prevalent than others there were some truly hysterical moments… I will just use names to avoid spoilers (IYKYK) Gardol, barathor, the fiery hilarious dwarf Kroz…. When Adam and the guys heard the tremors and noise and he said “nah, that’s nothing” I was in tears…. Ormis was also hilarious. The one thing that’s great is Sloss isn’t afraid to let some side characters die… granted not overly Important ones but some did have the limelight on the, for gallantry or some other good deed or they did something funny… only to die later on. A lot of authors don’t do this for various reasons. To be able to do this and to do it with class, style and flair is a mighty talent indeed. I cannot say how much I loved this and how I’m waiting for the next instalment. Please, do not leave us hanging! It’s insane how Sloss lost me as a reader/fan yet for some reason one of his books (a man’s word omnibus) to make me give his writing another chance… boy oh boy am I so happy I did! It makes me wonder if the legendary lord is actually truly good and I should just stick it out and give it more of a chance just to test the waters or if it truly is just a bad series… I shouldn’t say that, just not for me that is. That’s better. Anyways, this is a good one lads! It does have a cliffhanger but the ride is so good up to this point. On to the next! Onward lads!

Really good

The MC goes from a lone adventurer spawned by the gods in a swamp to an emperor, champion in the game of castles. He battles monsters, nobles, assassins, necromancers and of course other champs. The game is how the gods amuse themselves, using champions as proxies in their century long conflicts across the world. Of course the name of the game is castles, so they need to establish one or more bases of operation as they take over territory to improve their rankings and the influence of their patron gods. The champs amass wealth, develop harems, engage in politics, diplomacy and war. Obviously lots of dering-do, with battles involving different species as well as creative monsters from hags to ant-men to a giant wyrm to undead.

This is a big book but quite interesting so it maintained my attention til the end. I look forward to reading other installments, though maybe not immediately.

Adam new World new environment the game the gods play he must survive the odds to win .

Adam is pulled into a magical world created by a elf god . His business partner from Earth poisoned him to get rid of him . A god of barter selects Adam as his champion as the gods pit each champion against each other until one champion wins . With his wits and knowledge from his previous life he struggles to win quest or missions the gods send them out to complete an win rewards for doing so . High stake situations an life an death survival are the only way to win rewards an level up . recommend reading excellent book .

Amazing Story, but so many typos.

I really love the story, characters, and combat in this book. Can barely set it down once I get started. The only downside I found are the many typos scattered through the book with the wrong words. Most of the time, it's small things where after the read it, you can guess what the author meant and just move on. But there are also some bigger ones, or whole sentences that just don't make sense, where you sit trying to figure it out, or just give up and accept that it's an error and move on.

If it wasn't for those, I would give a 5 star.

This was a fairly long book to read, but enjoyable.

However, it probably could have been broken down into a couple books. Especially since the second book in the series is less then 350 pages.

Getting his first 4 harem girls in the first book seems crazy, but that might be because of how long it was. However there was good character building, and none of them seem to fall flat in the story or are just a quick side piece to add.

I hope the second book being so short compared to this one is still just as good, with good story telling and character building.

Read it because of the cover lol, pissed when I got the end and that character was hardly shown at all. The MC isn't great and neither is the chemistry, but the world building and plot were enogh to keep me reading until the end. Probably the best solo work from this author to date. So if you are looking for an intro to this author start here if you want a good first impression. If I realized before I started that this was the same author that did the griffon rider series, I wouldn't have gave it a chance.

I wanted to like this story very much, but alas, the author wrote a shit MC. The dude is a total chad. The other characters lack a voice - they all sound the same. The author front-loaded the game's mechanics so you were given the rules first before the plot started. DNF. It gets an extra star for having castles and elves though.

Epic Tale

Pulled form death on a earth and now a legendary champion. But it didn't happen overnight. This is a excellent page turner, filled with action adventure spice and snark! Excellent job I'm looking forward to the next book! You should read this tale. I believe that you're going to have a fun time!

A Truly Good Isakai & Small Harem

I really enjoyed the leveling up with this book. The story line was amazing and not rushed.
Would like to see More adventures, Cultivation during the next "few years" of "peace" and of course the Harem grow in the next book.

This was exactly as stupid as you’d expect from a book with a cover featuring a woman with breasts bigger than her head. Sometimes books like this are a fun light read. This one is not.

It should be 6stars

Outstanding story. Great characters; the MC super strong but not over powered for the realm that he's in. I'll surely be there for the next installment.
