Is it a new weapon from the Orb who finally decided to get rid of human kind?Soon a crew of misfits under the command of Captain Gavin Andal has to find out, because their homeworld is next and the enemy knows no mercy. But Andal's crew carres a secret on board their ship, that might show a way to save humanity from its imminent extinction.
Joshua T. Calvert has traveled the world--on foot, by Jeep, by bicycle, by motorcycle, and lots of other ways besides. As you might imagine, he's seen many things most people never see - including an Iranian prison cell, from the inside! In Kyrgyzstan, he fared slightly better, narrowly avoiding being kidnapped for ransom. Skydiver, scuba diver, martial artist, adventurer - his goal is to experience everything possible, and then make it real to you in his books. And he's made a good run of it so far: in the Philippines, he did police training on multiple types of firearms (despite being no fan of guns himself); dove in Asian waters among sharks and shipwrecks; and patrolled with Sumatran jungle rangers.
That's what defines Calvert's approach to method writing: pushing himself beyond his own limits, to experience first-hand what his characters experience, to make your immersion in his stories as deep as it can be.
For Ganymede Rises, after a slight detour with some smugglers in the deserts of Uzbekistan and the steppes of Mongolia, he traveled by dogsled and snowshoe to the Arctic Circle to experience first-hand what it's like to be utterly isolated in the coldest place on Earth. For his book The Fossil, he sat with professional pilots in flight simulators for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft to learn what it's like to fly a passenger jet. His latest adventure: a parabolic flight with European Space Agency astronauts, to experience zero-gravity. All so he can describe it to you, in his own words.
Highly enjoyable sci-fi space opera of galactic proportions
The immediate and basic story is of one man's quest for answers and justice against shadowy forces known but hidden within humanity. Technologically superior alien race that operates unseen against humanity, possibly in league with another galactic entity of unknown origin and unstoppable progress.
Political, economic and criminal underhanded dealings across galactic society, involving the military, corporate, bureaucratic and monarchist elements. This book and series has all the ingredients of the classic humanity-in-danger of annihilation, as well as individuals up against unexplainable forces of galactic origin.
The main protagonist Gavin Andal's character grows on you slowly, as he is supposed to represent a everyman noble, born of high status and a cushioned environment. Though a Captain and Lord, early on in the book, Andal is hammered by brutal adversity - he does not seek revenge and is in control of himself. Despite being racked by grief and raging emotions, due in no small part to the technology built in to his body afforded him by his noble birth, Gavin channels his mind and energy into discovering the who, what, where and why of it all. Consequently, he is able to overcome his natural inclination to adverse treatment of those not favoured by birth or political machinations like the unwanted and disparate crew, he has been thrown together with. And surprisingly quickly, Gavin discovers an ability to adapt and mould himself to the extremely rapidly changing and ongoing situations. and by extension, his crew too begin to reluctantly accept his leadership not a moment too soon, as he finds himself and his crew thrown violently into an evolving set of situations by uncontrollable circumstances.
Similar in elements to Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series, but seemingly, mainly in style of The Expanse novels by James S. A. Corey. The author Joshua T Calvert, has announced further expansion novels and series set in this universe including contributions by other authors. I have read and enjoyed previous novels/series by Calvert, and so look forward to the books and series to come in the future.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Sometimes when there are so many characters, titles and worlds; it's hard to keep up. But I have to say is that I have thoroughly enjoyed these books. Looking so forward to the continued stories to grow and expand in the future. Keep up the good work!
An absolute delight from start to finish! The characters were so real and relatable that I found myself cheering for them. The plot was clever and kept me turning the pages late into the night. This is storytelling at its finest. I’m already looking forward to reading more from this author.
DNF. It tries to have action, but it's just so boring, could not care less about what is going to happen. At the same time it keeps jumping between different views which is very annoying.
