First Snow

Rate this book
JARETH FAELING is many things. As a Half-Fae, he tries to fit in a world of humans who have forgotten about magic. As a pathologist, he was confronted with the flaws of the justice system and the blind spots of the police that lead to murders going unpunished. So he decided to quit and start the elusive life as the owner of a night club. But his true nature keeps calling him, and Jareth finds himself hunting the monsters that lurk in the darkness, pretending to be human but aren't, just like him.

ARTTU PALOSAARI is a grumpy detective from Helsinki with unusual methods. He is hell-bent on solving a series of murders that span Finland and the UK. When the investigation is shut down not only by the Finnish police but also by Scotland Yard, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Even if it means leaving the confines of his jurisdiction and earning the trust of his prime suspect: Jareth Faeling.

Arttu, who has lived for his job for the longest time, is not prepared for the reluctant attraction to Jareth, nor the unexpected desire to be dominated. But the secrets that lie between them are heavy, and there's still a killer on the loose.

FIRST SNOW is a steamy, paranormal romance with a HEA. It is book two in the Northbound series but can be read as a standalone.

It's going to be release in winter 2023/24!

I’m very impressed, this was an awesome story! The way of writing was enthralling!

Arttu is a detective who visits, under false pretenses, Jareth Faeling’s BDSM club.
He’s convinced Jareth is a serial killer and wants to prove it.
Meeting Jareth turns his life upside down. The man is hugely attractive and dominant. Arttu never knew he wanted to be dominated, especially by Jareth.

Jareth Faeling is half-Fae and far from what Arttu thinks he is. He’s intrigued and attracted to Arttu.
Arttu is grumpy, a brat, and an inexperienced sub, and everything Jareth craves.
Jareth is head over heels. Arttu turns into wax under his skillful hands.
Both men are heavily involved with each other, and both have secrets.

Still, Arttu can’t lose his head, there’s a murder to investigate.
I loved it very much that the course wasn’t predictable, I was surprised by the events.

The author made a breathtaking piece of work with this supernatural story, the magic was overwhelming, the tension and emotions palpable!
I absolutely adored Jareth's possessive and protective dedication to Arttu and Arttu who was at first reluctant but melted more and more.
Together they are scorching! The author did an amazing job with their dynamic, chemistry, and intense interactions.
The crime part was present but thankfully Jareth and Arttu’s interactions were way more visible, which I appreciated very much!!
An absolute winner!

l loved the first book in this series so I was excited to continue and read book 2! This one was a little bit more of a miss for me. Overall it was a good story but I didn’t feel like too much really happened until near the end of the story when it got quite exciting.

I did end up enjoying Jareth’s chapters more than Arttu’s. I liked the whole fairie thing. What I loved most about this book was their sexual chemistry. I loved seeing them together and Arttu letting go and opening up to being a sub. I was a little thrown off by the quick turnaround in Arttu’s feelings for Jareth. Didn’t feel that was quite believable but I did like their HEA.

It was neat to see the characters from book 1 a few times in this book. If you read book 1 I’d give this book a chance and I hope you love it!

I love me a good story of secret identities and morally gray killers. Especially of the supernatural variety 🤭💕 This had such a neat plot and the characters, especially sweet lovable Arttu, were so fun!

This is another book that delves heavily into BDSM culture, clubs, and parties. There were a couple of very explicit exhibitionism scenes, and that kink just is not my cup of tea! So I skimmed over those scenes, but either way, I'm still very glad to have read this book because Saga's writing is phenomenal and I love the world building and Scandinavian folklore 💖

“Oh, sweetheart, don’t be afraid that your feelings aren’t reciprocated. You have no idea. You are the only one who really knows my true self, you are my treasure, my everything."

If you want to treat yourself to a gift this holiday season, then I suggest you buy First Snow by Saga Nansen when it releases on December 26th.

Mixing together Scandinavian folklore, mythical worlds, and a scorching hot couple, this paranormal MM romance is hot enough to melt the snow and warm those winter nights.

Detective Inspector Arttu Palosaari has taken matters into his own hands to investigate a series of murders across Finland and the UK, which police have failed to act on.

Arttu travels to England to look for information about his missing childhood friend, and he seeks to befriend the prime suspect by attending his BDSM club, The Worship.

What Arttu doesn't expect to find, however, is how drawn he is to the suspect, Jareth Faeling.

Jareth is a half-fae, charged with maintaining The Truce between the Kingdom Beyond and the human world, meaning that Jareth - Lord Blackrose - has to punish those who act outside of The Truce, unbeknownst to Arttu.

Grumpy detective, Arttu, might be snappy with Jareth when they first meet, but deep down, he reacts to Jareth, and his subconscious seems to realize he's safe with him. From the first 'good boy' his body does as Jareth says - and I loved it!

The chemistry between them is sizzling, and the BDSM scenes are top-notch. I love nothing more than a reluctant sub giving into needs and submitting to their partner. Every 'Sir' Arttu bestows upon Jareth, and then Jareth's care and attention for Arttu is just perfect and so sexy.

'“Please, sir...”

“I’m going to make you feel so good,” Faeling promises. “All you have to do is take what I give you...”

Twisting in his restraints, Arttu can’t even tell anymore if he’s shying away from the burning flare of the whip, or arching into the pleasure it leaves in its wake...

“Come for me, darling.”

Something about Jareth’s voice has Arttu’s head spinning. It echoes in his mind and fills his being.

Arttu doesn’t know how not to obey.'

Despite his investigation, Arttu quickly falls for Jareth, and the feeling is mutual. But when danger threatens Jareth's beloved, and secrets are revealed, Jareth's fae side wins out, and he imprisons Arttu in his family home...

'The stories aren’t exaggerating when they say that the Fae like to bring beautiful humans to their realm to keep them as their lovers.'

Can these two survive the danger they face. And will their love make it through everything they've been through?

I adored Arttu and Jareth together. My heart hurt for each of them at different times, but their love shone through. They were so good together, and the heat 🔥Saga Nansen is great at writing those BDSM scenes!

But I also really enjoyed the folklore and seeing glimpses of Finland... like book 1 in the Northbound Series, First Snow makes me want to travel to all of the locations!

I truly loved First Snow, and I highly recommend it! This is book 2 in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone.

Many thanks to Saga Nansen for allowing me to arc read this book 🥰

'“What if I like to be locked up here for a while? What if I want you to do with me as you please?”

“As you wish, sweetheart... For now, you’re mine.”

“Yes,” Arttu hisses. “All yours.”

As always with Saga Nansen's books, I was drawn into a beautiful (and beautifully dark) world of myth and folklore with First Snow. Nansen weaves in aspects of Scandinavian mythology alongside modern contexts and characters in a way that blurs the boundaries of fantasy and reality—it's exactly the feeling I expect I'd have wandering through a primeval forest and wondering what was lurking in the shadows!

On top of that atmosphere, I love the intriguing insight into a culture and mythology that I (and I would guess many Western readers) am not very familiar with. It's enough of a taste to give a fascinating and unique edge but not so obscure or confusing as to make the story hard to follow (there's also a glossary at the back of the book, which I found very helpful).

While the myth/fantasy is a major aspect of this story, First Snow is also a crime/adventure story (think a mix of dark fantasy and detective fiction). Even though the reader has a pretty good idea of the truth of the "mystery" (since we have the perspective of both main characters), there's still a good amount of suspense and tension about how everything will play out, and the story didn't feel predictable to me at all.

As for the romance part of the story—to be honest, I'm not usually a fan of BDSM relationships (it's just not really my thing to read), and I mostly picked this book up anyway simply because I enjoy Nansen's writing so much. That said, both the sex scenes and the relationship between Arttu and Jareth are very well done. They manage to be both sexy and tender, not too extreme for those not into hardcore kink but (I think) still spicy enough for those who do like that dynamic. Plus, the banter between Arttu and Jareth and the development of their relationship is charming (who could resist a grumpy cinnamon roll and a wicked and sexy yet sweet fae?). I'm not a big fan of squeaky-clean, flawless characters, and Arttu and Jareth both felt multidimensional and realistic to me—there's some morally gray area, and it feels like both characters learn and grow and balance each other in the end (even with the sub/dom aspect). There's also a cast of quirky and charming side characters that add extra color and humor to the story.

Overall, this is a deliciously dark fantasy, an intriguing crime story, and a sexy romance all in one, and it envelops the reader in a captivating (and alluringly perilous) world of unique folklore.

Ever since Jareth Faeling appeared in Midnight Sun, I’ve wanted to know more about the intriguing doctor turned club owner. In First Snow we get his story, and oh boy! Buckle up, because his history, motivation, and true nature are quite a ride.
We met Finnish detective Arttu Palosaari at the end of the novella Midnight Sun. He’s still convinced Rory Sullivan is a murderer, but can’t prove it. (Spoiler Alert: he’s not; Arttu just isn’t open to the truth yet.)
This lack of closure leads to him agreeing to help a childhood friend by looking into the suspicious death of her brother, Mikael, in London.
His prime suspect: Jareth Faeling.
A London vacation and off-the-books investigation has him posing as a sub at Jareth’s club. Lines are blurred as Arttu is drawn to the darkly dangerous club owner. They sizzle. And if Arttu isn’t quite convincing as a sub, Jareth doesn’t seem to mind.
I loved this story and how it mixed mystery, folklore, and paranormal elements. Don’t read too much beforehand, going into this blind will make the experience even better.
The relationship pushes both men to their limits, making them question what is real, and ultimately trust each other.
The secondary characters are amazing. I want more of Arttu’s band of colleagues - especially witch Loki. And I loved how threads tied to previous books, but still read as a stand-alone. (But do yourself a favor and read Midnight Sun first.)
A possessive, half-Fae avenger and a grumpy detective who uncovers a surprising need to be dominated was the pairing I didn’t know I needed, but am all for it!
The writing is lush, lyrical, and will take you transport you. There’s a lovely full circle moment to a dream Arttu had at the beginning of the book that is magical. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First Snow - Fae Love

‘Jareth’s mouth is already on his, taking and exploring, and Arttu decides to roll with it. Needy little sounds slip from his lips as he opens up to Jareth even further. Instinctively, Arttu tries to lift his arms to wrap them around Jareth’s shoulders, but he’s stopped by Jareth’s hand coming up and pushing his wrists firmly back into the mattress. Arousal floods through Arttu’s veins, leaving rising heat in its wake. Arttu moans, surprised to hear the unrestrained sound fall from his lips. How can Jareth’s kisses and his comforting warm weight on top of Arttu feel so incredible? Melting into the touch, Arttu allows his eyes to flutter shut. He feels content, weightless, like he’s floating.’

The second book in Saga Nansen’s Northbound series continues to envelop us in the mysterious and magical world of the paranormals and the connections they have with humans. Arttu is a detective who is looking into the case of a missing childhood friend, and finds himself drawn to an individual he believes to be a murderer. He takes chances outside of his Helsinki jurisdiction as he hunts for pathologist Jareth Faeling, his prime suspect.

This book, like book one, Midnight Sun, is a brilliant rendering of communities learning about each other and the individuals who dare to try understand those unlike them. Arttu finds that he has deeper layers and needs, and half-fae lord Jareth is able to tap into those needs, both physically and emotionally. Together these two develop a deeper attachment than either expects!

Marvellous second book in a marvellous series

I loved Northern Lights (free prequel) and Midnight Sun, and seeing Topia and Rory and Finn and Jamie in this one was just a lovely added bonus.
As with the other two, myths and legends and magic underpinned this story, set against a snowy backdrop and this time, Jareth's BDSM club in London and his mystical home in Finland. Jareth intrigued me in Midnight Sun and he certainly didn't disappoint. He was even more fascinating than I anticipated, and his dynamic with Arttu? Pass all the fans, please! Nothing SUBpar or SUBstandard from their very first meeting.
Jareth was all hearts and honey around Arttu, completely captivated by the grumpy little sub who repeatedly pushes back and challenges him, only to turn to putty in his hands a second later, so responsive to Jareth even while gritting his teeth. They absolutely seared the pages throughout.
I loved Jareth but I really wanted to bang Arttu's head against a brick wall a lot of the time, to knock some sense into that thick skull of his. Oh boy, was that man stubborn, but.... it was fun to watch his trajectory from dogged policeman to puzzled sub to conflicted sceptic to beloved partner.
These three works from Saga are on a short list of books that I would recommend without reservation to anyone looking for something different, fascinating, unusual, extremely well-written and completely satisfying from first page to last. Long may she continue regaling us with wonderful characters and magical stories.

I finished this in one sitting, absolutely tore through could not put it down. Then proceeded to stare at the wall and work through the book hangover.

I said it when I read Midnight Sun and I'll say it again now with even more feeling, this series is soooooo good and more people should be freaking out over it. The relationship dynamics are some of the most enthralling I've read in PNR books. The characters have depth and the plots are engaging and entertaining (and SO steamy that party scene oh my GOD if ykyk 👀).

The BDSM elements are also super well done imo. I really really liked Jareth as a Dom, it was clear he deeply cared about the health and wellness of his sub and whether Arttu felt comfortable with everything they were doing. And Arttu as a sub complemented him nicely, with his inherent brattiness interspersed with moments of sweetness and insecurity. I have to say BDSM in books can turn sour for me super fast, mainly because consent in those situations can be a trigger. These books have never betrayed me though.

This book dives into Fae lore which was exciting to see and super well written. I loved the entire setting, from the imagery to the spells and monsters, just as I did with the first one. In fact reading this one made me want to go back and reread Midnight Sun.

This series is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. Can't wait to see what the third book holds!

*I received and ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review* ♥️

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

This is book 2 in the Northbound series, but it can be read as a stand alone. There is a minor on-going story arc that can be quickly picked, with most being recapped in this book.

I loved book one, Midnight Sun, and while I really REALLY enjoyed this one, it doesn't quite meet up to book one's grab-you-and-not-let-go kinda vibe, and it pains me, deeply, to say so!

I liked Arttu, I really did. He wants to find out what happened to his friend in London and if he has to get on his knees for a murderer, so be it. But Jareth is so much than the skin he wears. Yes, he has killed beings and people that break the rules, but never in cold blood. He is Half-Fae, a Lord of his people, and as such wears a glamour most of the time. When Arttu finally sees Jareth true form, he isn't quite sure what he is seeing, but he knows he needs Jareth, in any form.

Jareth, not so much. I don't know why, but my overwhelming feeling about Jareth is "I don't like you!" That said, I did like how drawn he was to Arttu. He knows Arttu is keeping secrets, he is a master at that himself, but still. He wants Arttu in a way he never wanted anyone before.

I liked that Jamie and Finn pop up (from book one) I liked the supporting cast, both the support for Arttu and Jareth is great in very different ways.

I'm still not sure quite what happened with Lord Briar and his wife though!

And I thank you, Saga Nansen, for the glossary at the end!! I found in immensely helpful!

I'm sorry I couldn't love it as much as Midnight Sun, but I did thoroughly enjoy it.

4 very VERY good stars

Overall: 4/5
Spice: 3/5
Angst: 2/5
Gore: 1/5

Series: Yes (2/2)

I was delighted by the progression of this series in the second installment from Nansen and I was actually relieved that I read the first installment before this ARC, even though they can be read standalone - I think that it was the right choice for me and the growth of both the world and Nansens writing style was evident. It feels like they’re really hitting their stride now in First Snow.

We circle back to Finland and to Detective Arttu Palosaari, our Grumpy main character who takes some mysterious disappearances into his own hands after Scotland Yard and the Finnish Police aren’t proactive enough. His sights are lasered onto Jareth Faeling, previous murder suspect and owner of a BDSM club (as seen in the first book of the series.) He makes the ballsy choice to go undercover and seduce Jareth to get some information and seek justice.

It all goes pear shaped when his reluctant attraction grows with their connection and Arttu is torn between his desire and getting a killer off the streets.

I noted in my review for Midnight Sun that I wanted more mystery, and Nansen delivered with this book. I liked the connection between Arttu and Jareth, the magic that was further explored and the push and pull. I found this a fun, light-ish read, hot and sexy at times. I’ll continue reading the series if there are further books planned and I can’t wait to see Nansen develop as a writer.

Book 2, Northbound series

Saga has a really unique style of writing that I really like. This series is fabulous. So different than any other paranormal stories I’ve read. The world building is intriguing and I like the peek of the characters from the first book and the free novella on her website. And the cover art… 🥵

Grumpy Finnish police detective Arttu is in London investigating the unsolved murder of his friend’s brother and his gut says half-fae lord Jareth has something sinister to do with it. When Arttu ends up in Jareth’s BDSM club and then his home, he thinks its the perfect time to find out what happened.

Arttu has such a hard time fighting his natural submission to Jareth. His feelings and lust keep him shaken up and wishing for Jareth’s innocence. Meanwhile Jareth is fighting his natural Fae instinct to take Arttu as his, forever, whether Arttu wants that or not. Can these two get past the secrets and lies that are the foundation of their new relationship and have their own HEA? And if Jareth is not the killer, who is?

❄️ D/s vibes
❄️ BDSM schmexy times
❄️ Forced proximity
❄️ Fae characters
❄️ Fated-ish love

Then this book is for you!

🔥🔥🔥🔥

**The s3x scenes are so well done, I honestly would have loved more because they were super hot and I loved how Jareth dominated newbie Arttu.**

I generally don't like reading ARCs in December, and especially towards the end of the month. There's always so much going on so I usually use this month to read light holiday romances. But I could not pass up the chance to get my hands on an early copy of this book. Normally I would have devoured this in a day or two, but I had to spread out my reading this week for all the holiday festivities.

Nansen is still a pretty new author, but I love the balance of their writing. It's a wonderful blend of fantasy/paranormal, BDSM, and Scandinavian culture. This is the second book in the series. There is a little bit of crossover with some characters, but it can absolutely be read as a stand alone.

This book has a ton of heat, but there is also a lot going on plot-wise. There were a couple times where I really had to think back about who a character was, but I'm mostly blaming that on all the distractions I had around me this week. The story was easy to follow and engrossing. I really enjoy Nansen's writing style, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Great Paranormal MM Romance

This was my first paranormal MM romance. It definitely taught me a thing or twelve about myself!! This book has so many amazing elements. This is a paranormal romance wrapped up in a murder mystery, throw in a high end BDSM club and an enchanted bullwhip and you have a scorching hot story.

This book kept me engaged all the way through not only with the smutty elements, but with the mystery theme and a genuine interest in the outcome for these characters.

Arttu is a detective searching for answers to a string of murders that hit close to home when one of his childhood friends goes missing.

Jareth is the owner of London’s premier luxury BDSM club. He is also half-fae whose family legacy is upholding The Truce between two realms.

When their paths cross sparks fly. Can they keep the dark magicians at bay and both make it out alive…..

This is the second book of the Northbound Series. It can definitely be read as a standalone, but I fully intend to read the first book immediately.

This book was fantastic.

I was hooked from the beginning. The world that Saga is creating here is all consuming, and I felt so imersed in the story. Arrtu and Jareths connection was electric from the very beginning and only got deeper as the book went on. I feel that this book gave us more of an insight into the magical world and how it fits into the human world.

Arrtu is a fascinating character. He seeks out Jareth on the hunt for a serial killer but soon finds that he is drawn to him in ways he could never have predicted. Jareth is such a protective partner. He loves exploring Arrtu's sexual side but is so caring and is totally taken by him from the very beginning.

This book is full of mystery and suspense and will have you guessing throughout. The writing is engaging, and I really connected with the characters. I think this world is just going to get better and better as we move through the series, and I can't wait to explore it.

This is a really good story. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it, but it was worth persisting, because I became fascinated by the relationship between these two men. Arttu had moments where he annoyed me because he had pretty much decided Jareth was guilty and nothing was going to dissuade him of that, regardless of the evidence. Despite that, he couldn’t stop himself from being drawn into a relationship. Jareth is really a lot kinder and softer than I expected he would be, and particularly towards Arttu, who kind of doesn’t deserve it. It was a very intriguing story, and the more I read, the more invested I became in the outcome. I was happy to see these two finally work things out and achieve their HEA.
4.5*

Dark Magic amid the Snow.

What a scary world Saga Nansen took me on with ‘First Snow’, took me a while to grasp this paranormal world and decipher who was the goodies and the baddies.

Artuu, a Detective in Finland investigating the mysterious death of his friend Mikael, and Jarleth, Lord Blackrose, a Fae and half human, with magic at his disposal when he flicks his fingers. Artuu, had no chance against this enemy.

I still managed to become enthralled with Arttu and Jarleth, him especially I just had to keep envisioning him as a huge dark handsome man without the horns and fangs. 😂😱

Loved the setting in the snowy world of Finland, liked it even more from inside the warm castle of Lord Blackrose, looking out at the pristine show.

‘First Snow’ is the second book I’ve read by Saga Nansen, and I’m certain it won’t be my last.

Arttu, a detective suspects Jareth, an owner of a nightclub of serial murder so he goes undercover. The two enter a Dom/sub relationship without Arttu realizing Jareth is half fae. Saga writes the most fascinating stories, a mix of mystery, murder , magic and Scandinavian mythology. Arttu and Jareth have sexy times that can make you blush but also shows Jareth's devotion and obsession with Artuu. As another book in the Northbound series, you will be absorbed in this creative and unique storyline that manages to enthrall you as much as the first book. I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Fae Magic, Old Deities and Murder

In the second book of the series, cop Arttu is investigating a couple of murders undercover to catch suspect Jareth, who owns BDSM Club Worship.
What starts as a simple mission, turns into so much more as Arttu finds himself enamoured of Jareth and discovering the hidden sub within.
He doesn't know who or what Jareth is, but this book delves into Icelandic mythology, the link scene and Fae Magic.
It's terrific stuff, very steamy at times, sweet and funny as well as filled with danger.

This was a fantastic follow up to the first book in the series. Jareth and Arttu are hot together and sensual. They both have an amazing connection that is otherworldly. Arttu is investigating the disappearance of a childhood friend, who is the brother to a still good friend of his. His investigation leads him to Jareth and the worship. Jareth is his prime suspect, so he decides to seduce him and play the sub for the dominant man. Unfortunately for Arttu, he isn’t really playing, he feels submissive and all sorts of feelings develop between the pair. The more Arttu investigates, the more questions he has. None of it is adding up for him. There is danger and intrigue, a murder mystery to solve, paranormal aspects that suck you right in. The writing is done so well. The sex scenes are erotic and sensual, featuring dominance and submission. This story had me sucked in and glued to my kindle to the very last page.

The book was a great read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The characters were created with thought, and the spice between those two is through the roof.
The development of the relationship is written skillfully. The plot is compelling and captivates the reader straight from the beginning, and the overall wordlbuilding has been done fascinatingly.

And if you love a light spanking, this is straight up your alley.

This was a very interesting story. It took me a little bit to get into it because I don't typically read 3rd person POV but once I got over that hump I really enjoyed the development of the story. This book could have taken a really dark turn but it didn't. Saga Nansen grazed the dark romance line but kept it light enough that most MM romantasy lovers (18+) could enjoy it. It has a little gore and a lot of smexy time with a very possessive Fae.

4.5 stars. A really captivating combination of supernatural beings, bdsm and really intense chemistry between the MCs. I particularly enjoyed the growth process Arttu needed to accept that there were so many things he never knew about. The Finnish traditions and tales were really interesting.

Arttu and Jareth meet under less than stellar circumstances. Arthur believes Jareth may be a un aliving people. He's trying to find out what happened to a childhood friend turned someone he only cares about because his other friends do.

The undercover mission he embarks on brings a lot more to light than Arttu anticipated. This is fun plot driven read. Buckle up and pay pay attention.

I really enjoyed Midnight Sun so was excited to return to the Northbound world.
I loved the dynamic between Arttu and Jareth and how it wasn't easy for either of them, trying to keep their true identities secret despite their feeling growing stronger.
I loved the veil of the fae world overlapping the human one and I hope there is more to come in this series.

I am not sure what drew me to this book. I think it was bondage and the Villain/cop dynamic. Or the sex club? The fae?

No idea. I am so glad that I read it! It was spicy and fun and just violent enough.

(I didn’t read book 1. I could tell I was missing something but not enough to take away from my enjoyment of the story)

Excellent mystery, sexy relationship dynamics between fascinating characters, well-done paranormal worldbuilding -- and genuine improvement in writing ability between the first book in this series and this novel. I look forward to seeing how far this writer goes.

Wow, I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did! Even though I haven't read book 1, it was still very enjoyable. Would recommend!
