The highly anticipated sequel to the instant #1 NYT bestseller Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy, an inventive and suspenseful fantasy by superstar author Angie Thomas.

All of Nic’s dreams have come true at last.

After years of living in hiding as a Remarkable in the Unremarkable world, Nic has everything she’d ever wanted: a big family, a forever home (in the magical city of Uhuru!), and, finally, a chance to learn the Gift at Manifestor school. And she’s hailed as a hero after finding the Msaidizi, a long-lost ancient magical weapon.

So life is perfect, right?

Well, except that her favorite author wants her dead, and a terrifying secret prophecy threatens her future. And Nic still can’t wield the Gift like other twelve-year-old Manifestors, which scares her. But then a bizarre encounter makes these problems seem as serious as a stubbed toe. She’s given a deadly ultimatum: Find the Book of Anansi or put her family’s life in peril. There’s just one tiny complication: Not only does no one know where the book is—they don’t even believe it exists…

The second book is better than the first. Funny one-liners, a deeper dive into Nics new normal in Uhuru, Nic and Alex's school is like an HBCU Hogwarts, and lots of magical action all wrapped up with a FANTASTICALLY awful cliffhanger 😵‍💫when is book 3 coming?

Thank you, NetGalley (and Angie Thomas), for an advanced copy of the wonderful Nic Blake and the Remarkables: Book of Anansi. Angie Thomas continues Nic Blake’s story in this exciting sequel to The Manifestor Prophecy. Nic is now training at school (very cool setting location with school subjects/equipment most would love to experience). Thomas expands her fantasy universe, with much of the story taking place full of new places and discoveries. And maybe a giant, vampire, or fairy in the mix too.
Nic Blake is trying to lead a normal life—starting school, making friends, and trying not to hurt others with her powers 😮 — but she and her friends (my favorite is still JP) are quickly swept into new adventures, full of new locations and dangers. As Nic learns more about herself, she also uncovers secrets about her gift that may change her understanding of who she is and where she came from. Nic must face challenges that test her courage, loyalty, and determination.

This book is full of action, humor, and heart. Thomas weaves in African folklore while telling a story about friendship, bravery, and believing in yourself. Fans of the first book, and readers who enjoy fast-paced adventures, will be eager to follow Nic on this magical, middle school journey.

A worthy second instalment to the series. I personally felt it was too long but I suspect the target audience would find it just right and I’m just being middle aged.

This sequel to Nic Blake and the Remarkables continues to charm with its blend of mythology and middle-grade adventure. Thomas does an excellent job weaving West African folklore into a contemporary setting, creating a world that feels both magical and grounded.

The plot moves at a delightfully brisk pace, following Nic as she navigates both supernatural dangers and the very real challenges of being a young person caught between worlds. What makes this book particularly engaging is how Thomas captures the unique intensity of childhood where every conflict feels dramatic and every friendship carries the weight of the world. The stakes feel appropriately high for Nic's age group without being overwhelming.

Character development shines throughout, especially in Nic's growing confidence and her relationships with her friends and family. Thomas has a gift for writing authentic young perspectives, though some of the dialogue occasionally feels a bit childish and stilted.

The pacing keeps you turning pages while it balances serious themes with moments of genuine warmth and humor. There's something endearing about watching these young characters tackle problems that are both fantastical and deeply relatable.

Overall, while the dialogue has its rough patches, this is a strong continuation that successfully captures the drama, stress and wonder of childhood while delivering an engaging mythological adventure. Thomas continues to prove her skill at writing stories that respect young readers' intelligence and emotional complexity.

Angie Thomas is kinda the best. I’ve gone to a couple of her book signings, seen her live twice, and read both of the Nic Blake books. And she’s delightful and interesting! So if you ever can, try to meet her or listen to her!

I first read The Manifestor Prophecy (the first Nic Blake book) in 2021 or 2022 (whenever it first came out) and I loved it! It was a really well written Middle Grade fantasy with aspects of mythology mixed in. When I started this book, I didn’t remember much from the first book but it was easy to pick this one up and get caught up pretty quickly!

The characters are great and not at all two dimensional like some Middle Grade characters can be AND I love Angie Thomas’ writing. Something about her narration is just super satisfying and delightful to read. The book was a little young for me but still a good read!

I recommend to about 5th and 6th grade!

This series is right up there Percy Jackson, Amari and the Night Brothers and the Cane Chronicles. Angie Thomas is amazing. Her storytelling keeps you hooked until the last moment. Nic Blake is well written and the weave of African culture and folk tale a phenomenal. I can’t wait for the next book. Ummm but can we talk about JP and his mom. Talk about a cliff hanger. And who Mr. Lincoln really is???? Didn’t see that coming. What about Doc Blake there is a change of character. Grandma President humph serious side eye.

Okay I enjoyed this one so much more than book 1. It was very fun and much more imaginative with the things the kids had to do. And the amount of current Black American culture thrown in here just tickled my heart. I was sending my mother and friends small snippets. Now they have just decided to download the audios as well lol.

From the juke joint owner referring to them as little boy and little girl. Her threatening to take junior out from trying to make vegan ox tails. JP being a typical preachers kid and fully owning it. All of it. I loved it so much. I still laugh every time he calls on Jesus.

It’s also a good fun way to try to explain current events happening in the world to your young ones. While as an adult, still fully enjoying the story.

The dynamics between the kids was great and they let every one keep their weird personality traits.

I hated grandma from the jump and I’m disappointed that mama still hasn’t come to terms that just MAYBE daddy was right. I’m still mad at her too because you just letting your mother get away with anything !!! I really dislike ALL the mother’s side.

Like I’ve said before, I take these darn middle grade books too personally! 🤣. Because they have me HEATED sometimes. this can’t be normal.

I loved Nic Blake and the Remarkables, and Angie Thomas has crafted a fantastic follow-up that left me only more invested in Nic and her world. Nic Blake has become one of my favorite protagonists in the middle-grade fantasy scene, and I can’t wait to watch her story continue to expand and gain a new, extremely well-deserved audience.

As always, Nic and the supporting cast are absolutely wonderful, with the kind of depth and complexity that left me so excited to read more after the first book. They’re distinct, witty, and play off each other in the best possible way, and I truly would follow them wherever this series goes next. Thomas concocts a flawless play on many of the best-established middle-grade fantasy tropes, making it feel both familiar and fresh even to someone who’s read widely in this space. I adore the world of the Remarkables, and I’m excited to see it explored even more in subsequent books.

Highly recommended!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own.

We return to the magical land of Uhuru with Nic, the Remarkables, one Unremarkable JP (the amazing best friend he is!), and a whole host of new characters.

Angie did a great job of reminding us about key points from book one by mixing it in with the story. I found it especially helpful since I didn’t want to re-read book one and didn’t remember all the details.

I feel like this one was lacking a bit though, or that maybe the “ending” was missing something. It didn’t really feel like closure was had and maybe that was the point, but I felt book one was a bit more well-rounded.

There’s got to be more to grandma and grandpa, I just know it! I mean, the whole thing with the necklace - something more is going on!

Excited to see where the story goes from here. Oh! And as a narrator, I enjoy Joniece Abbott-Pratt so much!!

The second book in the series I ended up getting an ARC for and waiting a little too long to get to it but it's a good follow up (as Thomas notes that any second book is notoriously hard). This one definitely has the qualities of a second book in a series because it's a *little* long and a *few* too many things actually happen to give it solid action, however it gives us a closer look into Nic and her friends as they get a hold of the Book of Anansi. Nic's world is a little different-- she's part of a prophesy that puts her in an awkward position because people want her dead.

Entertaining, it reminds me of Bayron's middle grade series with a great cast of characters and a solid fantasy world.

The ending, especially the last chapter really saved this book for me. I honestly felt that it was a bit too long, and although it didn’t feel like any part of it dragged, a lot of it just felt kind of unnecessary in my opinion. The big secret about Nic and how the grandma was handling the situation really irritated me. I also didn’t like the mother/daughter relationship, and I hated that we didn’t get to see more of the dad/daughter relationship like we saw in book one. Now the ending really shocked me. And I think because of all the surprises that I wasn’t expecting, it made the book feel more more worthwhile. Because for a very long time, I was really thinking just like please get to the point.

Nic is a girl split between two worlds as she faces the consequences of her father's decision when she was a child. One of the strengths of the first book was the father-daughter connection, whereas in this book we start to see the building of a mother-daughter connection.

Thomas' writing kept my attention from start to finish as both the character development expands from the first book, as does the world building. The lore surrounding the sought after book, while Nic also tries to balance her friendships and family, kept me turning the pages.

I am excited to see where the next book takes us because the cliffhanger was incredibly exciting.

Thank you Harper Kids for the gifted copy.

Okay, I need book three now! I thought the first book was awesome, but this one is even more amazing. I love Nic and Alex’s school. I love the flying and the magical stuff that happens. Skye and JP…everything.

The story is fast-paced and engaging, exploring themes of racism and classism. But it’s also funny and exciting. I’m excited to see what happens next.

Definitely a worthy second book in the series. I love that it is a complete story in itself, but the ending leaves enough suspense to remain interested in the next book. This one includes a lot of African lore, which is really enjoyable. Those who enjoy this one will enjoy the Tristan Strong series, and vice versa.

I read and listened to this because I was enjoying it so much. This one has less on the grownups and the fun dyanmics that were clearly based off HP, but it was fun, fast-paced adventure in it's own right. I will definitely continue this series and one I might want to reread all in a row at some point because I definitely forgot things since reading the first.

Wow. The writing integrity within the character arcs, plot, world building, dialogue, and hidden messages is quite stunning. I read this book front to back with my little cousin and it kept me hooked. The imagery is intricate and immersive, the journey is not too predictable, and I cannot get over the world building, I have to mention it again. Thank you, Angie Thomas.

Bright, witty, and steeped in Anansi lore. Nic juggles the Gift, Manifestor classes in Uhuru, and a prophecy that endangers her family. The favourite author twist is delicious, and the last chapters land with real heart.

Similar to the first, there was a lot going on and some world building holes. I liked Anansi and some of the school stuff and visiting other creatures and their cities. I wasn't a fan of the poor theology of the Christian characters...NAR influenced.

👍🏾 This was such a good second book. Most of the time the second book in the series is just filler. This one was a really good time! Lots of action and of course hilarious just like the first one. I cannot wait for book 3. Please please please don’t make me wait 50 more years for the continuation 😂😂😂😂
