Amelia ’s been dubbed a "cat lady" by her friends and family, but hang on to your knickers because Amelia is about to discover desires that are anything but fitting for a cat lady.
And who is offering to show her a new world of kink? It's none other than Ben , the one man who broke her heart two decades ago.
What can possibly go wrong? Get ready for some good laughs but be pre-warned that this is not a closed-door romance and there may be some pearl-clutching moments for some readers.
Dani Elias writes swoony, steamy British romance about women in their forties who are very good at some parts of life and quietly unravelling in others. Her FMCs are relatable, flawed, funny, and fully human. Some are plus size, some are not, but all of them are centred, desired, and allowed to take up space in their own love stories.
Set mostly in small towns, with the occasional city romcom, Dani’s books are written in British English and focus on emotional connection, lived-in chemistry, and intimacy that deepens the relationship rather than dominating it. Her heroes are usually golden retriever cinnamon rolls with a side of nerdy dorkiness, because frankly, that’s the dream.
Based in Carlisle (UK), Dani writes romances for readers who want grown up love, real bodies, real feelings, and proof that happily ever after does not come with an age limit.
I loved Ben he always tried to show Amelia how much he cared for her and how much she meant to him. I loved how he wasn’t a cat person and then boom he totally became one despite his denials 😂
Amelia.. Amelia. Amelia, I loved her too. I felt bad for her though, but I kinda related to her. Not being able to see what others see and truly think of you, so she’s always thinking negative and pushing people away. I loved how she treated smutty and how she convinced Ben to watch him😅😂😂
This was a really cute read some of my fave quotes were
“I’m not a poet, but I wish I were so I could put how she makes me feel into words.” 🥹
“There is not much in life that scares me, but the thought of losing you scares me more than dying.”😭🫠🥹
“He gave me a cheeky wink. He bloody winked! Does he not know that is like catnip for women around the world.”🤣🤣🤣
Overall this was a cute second chance romance. Ben broke Amelia's heart 20 years ago, after coming across her profile on a bdsm app he feels it is his chance to make mends for hurting her. Ben being a pleasure dom was a fun touch to the book. I can see this being a 5 star for someone who loves romcoms with some lighter kink to it but isn't into the heavier side of bdsm.
This book was so witty and cute !! I loved the second chance romance trope and the way the main characters reconnected. Don’t get me started on how cute Smutty the cat was, he seemed like the cutest little kitty. I highly recommend this book if you love romcoms.
Ok, Ok, Listen to me!!!! This book... This book is everything I didn't know I needed in a romance novel!!!! It has banter, fun smexy times, an AMAZING cat sidekick (seriously - Smutty is the STAR of this book!!!!)
This is a second chance romance as it's best, I loved both Ben and Amelia!! The backstory between these two honestly made me cry, what Ben did was inexcusable but at the same time you can see how people do things when they are young and (very) stupid.
Amelia is one of these FMC's that you know you'd be besties with IMMEDIATELY -which is good cos she REALLY needs some new friends, with the exception of one of them). She is hilarious, relatable, gorgeous and I just connected with her so much. Ben is, well young Ben is a douche-canoe, but older Ben is wonderful and thoughtful and sweet and just amazing. I had no idea what a pleasure dom was before this but lets just say it leads to some fantastically scenes that are heartwarming and swoony at the same time!
This is a fun, quick, smexy read - PERFECT for spring!!!! I adore all of Dani's books and this did not disappoint!!!!!

Amelia and Ben have a complicated history. Ben broke her heart when they were young. He's never forgiven himself, and she's never really forgotten it. They meet again in an unlikely place - a BDSM dating app. At first, Amelia doesn't know that Ben, the pleasure dom, is HER Ben from the past, but Ben has known it was her from the start. They agree to meet up for a date, and she is shocked to find her ex at the table when she arrives. Things heat up from there in more ways than one.
I actually really enjoyed this book. Smutty, the cat, won me over with his overly assertive grumpiness from the start. He's endearing, and I loved his little "Furball" nickname. I liked that the MCs were both older. I think a lot of romance books tend to lean toward the MCs being in their 20s so it was nice to have more mature characters. Although, I really liked the story, I didn't feel a very strong connection to either character. I liked them. I thought they were relatable, but I wasn't pulled in like I wanted to be. The spice was good. I liked the experimenting that they did. It was very light on the kink. Amelia was very new to the BDSM world, and Ben did a good job of making sure she was comfortable with everything that they did. He listened to her wants and desires and made a lot of that happen - sneaking off for sexy times at the wedding in a dark, unused room and using a discreet "toy" while at a classical music concert... 😮💨 I'm just saying this man knew exactly what he was doing, and I loved it. I really felt like a lot of the "kinkiness" took a backseat to the love story which was a nice change of pace. Ben really has been in love with Amelia for 20 years, and he's just doing his best to prove to her that she can trust him again and hoping like hell she'll fall back in love with him. Dani did a good job of making Amelia's insecurities relatable, and I think they are things that a lot of women feel at some point in their lives.
Overall, a very cute, relatable romcom with enough spice to keep it steamy!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Can the one who broke her heart be the one to help her find herself?
Amelia - STEM FMC, Curvy cat lady, has some self-esteem and body image issues Ben - CEO MMC, Cinnadom, might still have feelings for the one that got away

Ben helped Amelia accept and love herself and Amelia gave Ben what he truly wanted, true love. They say not to judge a book by it's cover and I am glad I didn't in this case. This book is an enjoyable, low-angst romcom with delicious spice, swoony moments and a second chance at love.
Looking forward to seeing what trouble Smutty and other friends (Bri) get into in book 2 (Dec. 2024).
I received an ARC copy and wanted to leave an honest review.
A second chance story that shows that we will get what we want exactly when we need it! Ben broke Amelia’s heart twenty years ago and when they get connected on a specialized dating site, Ben sees this as his second chance to apologize to Amelia. When Amelia decides to explore her private needs, she starts to trust the guy she’s talking to online to be the one to guide her through it. She doesn’t bank on Ben being the guy. She is wary and unsure, but realizes that she would be more comfortable with someone she knows and trusts enough to not take advantage. As long as she guards her heart. They discover that they have both changed and grown in the years since they were together and they still have deep rooted feelings and chemistry. Great spice, redemption and a real page turner that I loved so much! You can tell that Ben really did love Amelia and learned from his mistakes and Amelia grew and embraced her true self and her love of Ben that probably never really left. I want to know what happens with some of the side characters and maybe a glimpse of what Amelia and Ben are up to.
This was a cute and quick romcom audiobook! I didn’t know how much I needed to read a book with 40 year old, more mature characters. It was also refreshing to have a plus size FMC. The plot was great in the way the main characters reconnected for a second chance romance! 💘
Ben was so great after he’s been given a second chance by Amelia. He does so much for her to prove he’s worth a second chance. He really cares for her!
Amelia is so funny and relatable. I felt bad for her when I learned about her so called friends and work, but I was so glad that she found more happiness once she found Ben!
One of my favorite parts of the whole plot was Smutty, the cat! 🐈⬛ You never knew what kind of antics he was going to pull next, and I loved that Ben eventually fell in love with him as a pet!
I have been (im) patiently waiting for this book since the beginning of March and let me tell you - it did not disappoint! Thank you so much Happily Booked PR and Dani Elias for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Amelia is a 40 year old with a cat Smutty. Her friend Bea decided to sign her up on a BDSM dating app because Amelia "read smutty books". Ben, Amelia's ex from 20 years ago, sees Amelia on the app and with his identity hidden starts chatting with her. After that, their crazy antics are sweet and funny!
Ben is boyfriend goals. What an absolute sweet, understanding, supportive person. And Amelia is such a real person. The feelings, views and thoughts she goes through about herself has probably been felt by most of the female population.
I love these two as a couple. They communicate well, work great together, and Amelia has the loveable Smutty, her cat. Ben is super sweet as he teaches Amelia the ways of being a submissive to a pleasure dom as well as helping her look at herself through the eyes of those who care about her.
Not gonna lie, I preordered this book a while ago before I even read the blurb. As a self proclaimed cat lady myself, I was drawn to this book immediately. Now having read it, I can said it was 100% worth it!
I absolutely devoured this book. This was definitely a quick read for me. The plot just kept me hooked and wanting more. The spice was fantastic! And as a cat lover, I adored Smutty 😻.
I really connected with Amelia. I’ve felt some of her struggles so it was really nice to see a character like her! She was so sweet and shy and just lovable.
Ben’s growth as a character from when we see him in the past to now is such a great part in this book. He was thoughtful and sweet and I just loved him!
If you are looking for an easy, funny, quick read, then The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady is right for you! Be sure to check it out!
Amelia has been dubbed the cat lady by her friends she is in her forties and has no love prospects on the horizon, but when her friends set her up for an unusual kind of dating app she surprisingly goes for it. On the app Amelia reconnects with her old boyfriend, Ben, and things take off from there. Ben hurt her in the past, but for him Amelia is the one that got away. Will Amelia be able to see past the heartbreak from years ago and find happiness now or continue to be the cat lady?
I was intrigued by the title of this book from the beginning and wanted to see what it was all about. It turned out to be a fun, humor filled story with a good amount of steam, but also sweet romance. It was an enjoyable read with characters that were easy to like. This is an easy and quick read that you can get through without a problem. I did find any of it to be slow and it flowed together nicely. If you are into steamy romances with a good amount of fun, I think this would be a good choice for you.
The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady was not what I was expecting from the cover “don’t judge a book by its cover” Ben and Amelia dated 20 years ago and Ben broke her heart. Finding each other on a dating site 20 years later they were able to rekindle their relationship. I had a love/hate feeling towards Ben. The things he did in his past really irked me but I loved the new Ben! And Amelia was amazing! I loved how she became confident in herself! This book had lots of spice and I loved it! And I loved the side characters exept Bea. I would of liked to see more of that situation unravel for Amelias sake. I would definitely read more by Dani Elias!!!
This was a cute second chance romance, with a splash of spice! I gotta be honest, though: I'm not usually a fan of second chance romance. In this, I found that they reconciled a little too easily. It seemed unnatural. I also found the chapters a little short and choppy, but that could also just be personal preference. I did really like that the main characters were over 40. There's not enough books with that age range. And lastly! I wanted more cat lady energy!! There was a little bit, but I felt misled by the title. Overall, still really enjoyed it.
It’s been a while since I finished a book in one day without realising how quickly I was devouring it!
It’s so funny, and with a title like this you know the cat is going to steal the show 🐈⬛ (watch out for his name 🤭 and also the scene divider images - amazing!!). I love that this is an unapologetic, fun, hilarious book! There are some sad scenes, and working through past hurt and fatphobia. I was glad to see character development, and overall this was such a fun romcom!
I love Dani Elias and will read everything she writes but this was pure perfection! I love this second chance kinky read. I feel like I need my own pleasure dom after reading this. I loved how Amelia is a good ‘handful’ and that Ben has only ever had eyes for her. Their chemistry jumps off the page and the storyline kept me reading and I read this in one sitting. I can’t wait to see what comes next from this author!
I have to be really honest this book was really good but I wasn't as into than I thought I'd be... I did find myself judging this book by it's cover and I'm sorry for that. But I'm super proud of myself that I dove into this book anyways. I will say that there are some great characters in this book that I fell in love with. Then there were some that dislike with all my heart. But it was nice to see/ read about Coop and Lizzie again. I really loved the meaning/ moral of the story. I received this book as an arc form an honest review.
I loved this book more than | thought I would. Just the RomCom I was in need of! I related soo closely with Amelia's inner thoughts & insecurities. I was hopeful for her throughout the book. Ben... where do I start with that man?! I swoon for him. He has some explaining to do & needs to make things right. The way they reconnect was juicy & I loved it. I love their love & getting to follow along with how they navigated everything old & new!
This was definitely a cute and fluffy romance. Loved the body positivity and how well everyone communicated through everything. Also her friends are the best except for 1 of them. But overall I really liked this book!
I really enjoyed this book. This was a quick read that was hard to put down. The two main characters, Amelia and Ben, were really easy to love. But the character I loved the most was Smutty the cat 😂. It had a lot of real life situations that can happen like long friendships ending (I can sadly relate to that) and it made me enjoy this authors writing even more! It had humor, sadness, spice and love all rolled into one. I would highly recommend this book!
I originally read this as an ARC (original review below) and I had the opportunity to listen to the audio and I loved it! This is my first book narrated by Jane O’Neil and I thought she did a great job with all the different voices!!
This was a really fun and heartwarming book to read! As a self proclaimed cat lady I immediately connected with Amelia and her cat Smutty.
“Yeah, my cat rules me with an iron paw, but those big yellow eyes in his squishy black face? They're impossible to resist.”
Amelia had been unfairly labeled just a “cat lady” by her friends. Her friend signs her up for a BDSM dating app (because she reads spicy books) and is shocked to meet up with Ben - the same Ben who deeply hurt her years ago. Ben never got over Amelia and wants to prove how sorry he is. She finally agrees to talk to him. What could wrong?
I loved these two together! First they were a little order (in their 40’s) and their communication was great. They have amazing chemistry and some steamy scenes together!
Ben was sweet and caring really makes Amelia feel loved and beautiful. Amelia’s struggle with her body image was very relatable and I liked how Ben helped her work through it. I loved the groveling and how Ben agreed to let Smutty live with him (which leads to some very funny scenes!)
IBen was a total cat lover by the end! I can’t wait to see where this series goes.
What a delightful book. I laughed, I nearly cried, and now I’m going to miss my two new best friends. Dani Elias is an excellent author and sees to the very heart of the deepest wounds and works towards healing them in us through her characters.
Prepare to be captivated by Dani Elias' enchanting tale, "The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady." This book has it all—romance, dual points of view, a curvy female main character, and a delightful dose of forced proximity, all wrapped up with the charming (in the couldn’t care less way of all cats!) presence of Mr. Smutty, the black cat. From the very first page, I found myself deeply immersed in the emotional journey of the female main character, Amelia. Dani Elias has a remarkable talent for capturing the raw, heart-wrenching emotions that accompany both friendships and romantic relationships. As a reader, I felt truly seen by the authenticity with which Amelia's struggles and triumphs were portrayed as well as those niggling vulnerabilities we all have. The dual point of view adds depth to the narrative, allowing you to experience the story from multiple perspectives and gain insight into the minds of both characters. It is very hard to be mad at Ben, even from the very beginning! The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and I found myself rooting for their happiness from the very beginning.
What truly sets this book apart is Dani’s attention to detail and commitment to authenticity, particularly in the realm of intimacy. The level of spice was… WOW! *sweating face emoji*. It is clear that Dani Elias has done her research, resulting in scenes that are (incredibly) steamy, respectful and accurate. I devoured "The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady" in a single sitting, unable to tear myself away and then mourning when it was over! Book #2 is due out in December and truth be told, that is all I want for Christmas! Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!! "The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady" is a must-read for fans of romance and emotional storytelling. With its well-drawn characters, sizzling chemistry, and authentic portrayal of human connection, it's a book that will linger in your heart long after you've turned the final page. Dani Elias has truly outdone herself, and I eagerly await the next instalment in this enchanting series. Thank you so much Dani!! I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this book, my review is true and honest! Tropes: Second chance Rom com Dual POV Curvy FMC Public “fun” time B ooooty stuff Please-her dom 😉 Forced proximity Cat lady

Overall Thoughts: Main characters Amelia and Ben, previously dated in their early twenties. After rekindling on a BDSM dating app nearly twenty years later, both undergo a journey of self-exploration as well as exploration within a real, genuine, and fulfilling arrangement.
Some words that sum up this read: short, sweet, sexy, smutty, and fulfilling. Every girl (that I know of) is a little afraid of admitting their wildest fantasies. Maybe it’s just me over here- but I was able to heavily relate to the vulnerability and fear that Amelia contained within her interaction with Ben. After being hurt in love before, she was guarded, cautious, and fearful to be open with a partner. However, it was a pleasure (no pun intended) to watch her character unfold as the story went on. The confidence that she gained in her own sexuality was inspiring to watch. I love that I was left with no questions when reading this book- that everything flowed together well from beginning to end.
*Spoilers Ahead*
Contrary to what I’ve mentioned above, I think that there could have been more development to Amelia’s character. While her sexuality was blossoming, it felt that her own emotional security should have developed as well- though I know this is not always the case in real life. However, it was as if every time there was a little problem, she bolted from the scene. Never talking through the break up of their past, and then later immediately running when she felt any fear or insecurity in a relationship, I was questioning if she was ready for the level of commitment that Ben was proposing. I did love that the end of the book mentioned Amelia seeing a therapist as I think that was a good offset to the growth I hadn’t yet seen within her character. I’m wondering what the future holds for Amelia and Ben as they continue with their journey.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book. I read it in about three hours and Could. Not. Put. It. Down. I will continue to read the other books that Dani Elias has put out and whatever she will release in the future.

The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady captivated me as soon as I heard the title and saw the cover. I mean, I am a self-admitted crazy cat lady and will fully admit that if it has a cat in the title or a cat on the cover, you're gonna catch my attention.

My thoughts: This book was a quick, super sweet, and spicy read. It was funny, heartwarming, and had me hooked throughout the whole thing! I devoured The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady in a single sitting. I was unable to tear myself away and then mourned when it was over!
I found Amelia, the FMC, to be very relatable with her insecurities and struggles when it came to her looks and the dating scene. She was funny and relatable, navigating through her insecurities with humor and determination.
Ben was such a sweet MMC and helped Amelia through all of her struggles without judgment. His understanding and support were commendable, making Amelia feel safe and secure.
Also, I especially loved Amelia's cat, Smutty. He was central to so many hilarious scenes; the book wouldn't be the same without him!
I loved that after 20+ years these characters finally got the happy ending they both deserved!
The spice level was excellent, and it was clear that Dani Elias had done her research, resulting in scenes that were steamy, respectful, and accurate.
Book #2 is due out in December, and I definitely will be picking it up to read!
Thank you so much to Happily Booked PR and Dani Elias for this ARC!
This was a really fun, quick listen. I finished it in one sitting. This was my first book by this author and I’m definitely going to be looking for more of her work. I don’t know if it’s because this is a british romcom, but I think it gives Sophie Kinsella vibes (but smutty), so if you like her books, you should definitely check this out.
I really enjoyed the narration. It’s a solo female narration but dual POV and while the narrator’s male voice isn’t very strong, I really enjoyed the narration, including the spicy scenes in the MMC’s POV. She’s got the perfect voice for a romcom. She was amazing during the humorous parts, but also conveyed the tension in the steamy/spicy bits and the anxiety and heartache in the emotional bits.
I love it when pets play matchmaker in books, and Amelia’s cat, Smutty, deserves all the pampering and treats for her role in the story. I also love it when the main character treats their pet like a person.
Amelia is such a relatable character. She formidable at work, but in her personal life, the has so many insecurities. I really felt it when she was talking about her struggles with finding love and self-acceptance. I love how even in her insecurities, she has her moments of assertiveness where she asks for what she wants. She not a pushover. I love how Ben owned up to the mistake he made that let to their break up 20 years ago, (They’re in their 40s now. Yay for older main characters!) and tried to make it up to her. I love how supportive he is and how he fights for their relationship. This book was surprisingly spicy for a romcom. Ben is a pleasure dom and that’s actually how they reconnect. I love how he’s very attentive to her needs and values consent. I love how he gives her a safe space to explore her fantasies and accept herself for who she is, and that he makes her feel valued and cared for. This is a great book if your looking for something light and fluffy, with a bit of spice, characters who learn from their mistakes and fight for what they want, and side characters that add humour to the story and are caring towards and supportive of the main characters.
*I received a review copy from Happily Booked PR and these opinions are entirely my own.
ARC review for The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady by Dani Elias
Thanks to Dani Elias & Happily Booked PR for the ARC opportunity!
Featured tropes: Second chance, he falls first, curvy FMC, public spicy times, forced proximity, RomCom, relatively tame BDSM, a furball who steals the show
Trigger warnings: self-image issues, bullying for weight/appearance
Review: 4/5
This story was fun. It was a super quick read and I couldn't believe it when I'd already reached the end. The story moved with great pacing and I never felt like I was short-changed on plot or cutoff from the story while reading.
Things I liked: - Amelia was a crazy realistic FMC. She clearly had self-image issues and her insecurities were definitely realistic which made her very relatable. - Ben's a great MMC. He was obviously flawed (who isn't when they're young and dumb) and regretted his actions and was fully prepared to atone for those actions, even after nearly 20 years had passed. He wastes no time in supporting Amelia and trying to help break through her insecurities. - Smutty. That's it. Nothing else needs to be said. IYKYK. - Amelia's little girl power group. At first, I was worried. Bea and Miranda didn't seem like particularly supportive friends and they seemed to push Amelia to the backburner. I was so glad when Miranda turned out to be a true friend and with Bri (LOVE HER!), Fi, and Lizzie, come to show Amelia she is so much more than she thinks she is.
Things I disliked or missed the mark: - Bea sucks. I have no love for crappy friends. Not a book issue at all. Just wanted to make it clear I don't like Bea. Neil sucks too.
Overall, a fun quick read and I'll definitely check out the rest of the Cat Lady series as it comes out. I'm super excited to read Bri's story. The way she didn't hesitate to befriend Amelia and make her presence known makes me know I'm going to love her when it's her time to shine. You should absolutely give this book a shot!
“But the more time I spend with him, the less I dwell on the past and the more I see the good in him.”
I read The Unnatural Habitat of a Cat Lady in a short evening. It was a truly quick and addictive read, and had its very funny moments. First, let’s talk about the Lord of the story, the one and only fluffball Smutty. He’s Amelia’s (the MFC) cat (he would say she’s his human) and the gear of many key moments in the plot. I adored him, and the book’s title has real roots. More seriously, I found it very interesting how Amelia gets some control back on her life, asserts herself, through her sexuality. I’m usually one to like when lust comes after feelings, but here it worked just perfectly that the relationship aspect came after. (Yes, even if it’s a second chance romance). Amelia needs to find herself, to have confidence in herself, before having the ability to (emotionally) give her full trust to someone else. The fact that it comes through the affirmation and the verbalization of her needs (and desires) was truly interesting. I liked the moment when she opens up to Ben (and when she has the courage to end toxic relationships), but I would have loved a bit more of internal thoughts before that (but that’s only because I can totally relate to her…). Ben's character was a great one too. He has come a great way since their first relationship but evolves during the story too. I loved how he was her rock, her home base. Consent was a real key point here (a lot of kudos), and I just regret that it wasn’t the case also in non-sex moments, esp. around the temporary moving (yet it didn’t prevent me from enjoying the story AT ALL, and it was mostly ok as it happens on both sides). I had a great moment with this story and characters, thanks a lot to the author for this arc (and to Happily Booked PR). My opinions are my own. Rate 4.5/5
Yeah I’m not too sure about this one, like it was sweet but It took me a bit to get through. The character development was alright you learn a bit about them in the past but overall you don’t really learn much about who they are or anything like that. You don’t learn much about their jobs, just basic details. You don’t learn about their lives or anything which makes it difficult to resonate with the characters. Most of the characters were kind of two-dimensional, including the background characters, like her friends. In the end I gave up trying to figure out who was who cause they all just seemed like the same character. The plot was kind of not there, I guess it focuses a bit on their dynamic and them being together again after everything that went down between them in the past however the conflicts were just not conflicts enough for them to cause any sort of drama or elevation of the story. There is also a 3rd act breakup that literally lasts like a day because she sees reason to something that she had made up in her head. In terms of chemistry, like there was some but overall it lacked even that. It’s labelled as a spicy romance but most of it was closed door or fade to black type of scenes. I strongly believe that if an author doesn’t know how to write about a certain topic they should either not write it or consult on how to write about it. This book unfortunately is in that category, I don’t believe that this author knows how to write about a d/s dynamic and that might be why a lot of the scenes were fade to black but overall it was more a relationship where he was in charge in the bedroom not so much b/s. So spice for me is a 2/5. Overall, it wasn’t a horrible book but I do think it could have been so much more than it was. I’m putting it at a 2.5/5, it just wasn’t for me I’m afraid.
