Neopets #1

Neopets: The Omelette Faerie

Rate this book
SOMETHING HAS HAPPENED! Based on the popular online game Neopets comes the first in a series of graphic novels! Join Sabre-X, his Petpet Fang, a disgraced Fire Faerie with a checkered past, and all of your favorite Neopets characters in this original graphic novel that's about forgiveness, magic, and love (with classic Neopian humor laced throughout).

Legend has it that hundreds of years ago, a dinosaur of GIGANTIC proportions laid a massive egg. That egg split open, and started to bake in the sun. Ever since then, a giant omelette has been cooking on the Tyrannian Plateau. It may seem silly, but it is true.

The Giant Omelette is a staple in Neopets. Each day, hungry Neopets approach the massive, eggy monolith and manage to take a slice.

But this isn’t a story about how the Giant Omelette came to be. It is the story of how we almost lost it—forever.

In this beautifully illustrated original graphic novel, readers will follow Sabre-X, a disgraced Fire Faerie named Seraphina, and their Petpets, a Reptillior and a Faellie, on an epic fantastical journey through Neopia to restore one of the most popular parts of the site. This graphic novel also includes a universal code for a new one-time-use item in the back, which can be redeemed on the Neopets website and used in the Battledome.

I'm not really sure what I expected, but it wasn't canon sapphic Neopian faeries. Not mad about that. The story left a bit to be desired, but I haven't been in the mood for MG stories lately, so I'm blaming that on myself.

Was able to purchase a pre release copy from RetroGameCon and I loved every second. I truly hope this is a start of a series of graphic novels from neopets because I’m already ready for more! This was absolutely fantastic. Great characters, great writing and lots of fun references to the actual game!

There are definitely some errors canonically speaking (I'm looking at you, Alien Aisha, complaining of just checking out of the NeoLodge & being famished on pg. 11), but it’s Neopets (so obviously instant 5 stars)

I was today years old when I learned that the Fire Faerie and Water Faerie were canonically together. Another win for us gays.

Lolol, did I request my library purchase this graphic novel just so I could relive my middle school dreams? Absolutely.

I popped back into Neopets in December for the advent calendar (if you know, you know) and now I've been playing every day for over a month-- it's a delightful way to dink around on (in my opinion) the best version of the internet instead of doomscrolling social media. All that to say, I've been a Neopets fan for 22+ years now (!) which is why I got SO JAZZED when I saw there was a graphic novel.

Is it groundbreaking? Not really. Is it accessible if you don't know what Neopets are? Yeah, I suppose. Is it way more enjoyable if you're already a fan of the site? Heck ya! There are a couple lovely easter eggs for folks familiar with the property (like a "Something has happened!" box as part of the story) and it provides background for well-loved aspects of play.

As for the story itself, it was relatively simple but fun! The artwork is predisposed to be pretty and polished so there wasn't as much variation in expressions as I would have hoped for, but it's a technicolor fever dream of cuteness. I enjoyed the characters a lot-- lesbian faeries! you love to see it!-- and it was great learning the lore about sites I visit daily.

Actual rating probably more like 3.5, rounded up for nostalgia and love.

(And if anyone wants to be neofriends, lemme know lolol)

I work in the teen section of my public library, and hearing about this graphic novel coming out, and knowing my younger teens/tweens love cute/sweet things, I figured I would order this graphic novel, since having played neopets I knew it fit the innocent/cute/nice vibe that these kids searched for in graphic novels.
I then proceeded to restart playing neopets, which I hadn't played for years (and so I lost my old neopets 😞 ) and am addicted again.
This graphic novel finally came in yesterday and I loved the graphics, I loved the plot.
I really liked that the graphic novel treated the reader as if they had never experienced neopets before, and therefore a lot of things were explained that players already understand.
Some of the dialogue felt a bit awkward and forced at times, but I can forgive that for the fact the story was complete at the end of the graphic novel.
I do hope there will be more coming out, though I also hope they will not continue to re-explain neopets things (only things they newly introduce in subsequent volumes).
Over all super cute and I would absolutely recommend it.

I received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

Despite it being AGES since I played Neopets. Well, OK, thanks to this book (and the previous book) I decided to check out Neopets again and make a new account, but when I read this book I hadn’t played in years. It was a big big part in my life for a while, I had friends, fun times, won a few prizes, wrote fanfiction about my pets, kept an actual on paper catalogue of my store and the stuff I wanted to get, and more. Due to something happening I stopped playing Neopets and well, now? I want to go back. Though it is a bit confusing since the site has both new bits and older bits, stuff that I clearly recognise and stuff that I don’t get yet.

Now to this book which tells us the story of Seraphina who is a fire fairy, or she was, because she got kicked out for reasons (Dark Fairy reasons) and how she became the Omelette Faerie. I don’t see it as a spoiler, it is 1) the title and 2) those who play Neopets/have played Neopets know her. For a big chunk we follow Sabre-X who is the guardian of the Omelette in Tyrannian Plateau. It is an amazing omelette, each day it returns and each day you can get one slice. Oh, BOY, I remember that. Not knowing what it may give. It could give anything for yummy stuff to well, for me as the Gore Food connoisseur it was fine, disgusting stuff. In this book the omelette is in trouble. Things are happening. It is not appearing. And things are going from bad to worse to terrible. We see how it doesn’t just affect Tyrannia, but also affected all of Neopia. Because a lot of folks rely on this omelette. It was a lot of fun to see the story play out, meet old friends (Soup Faerie for instance), and see how Sabre-X and Seraphina had their issues, but also were eager to do something about things (well, OK, Seraphina definitely had her own reasons, but I didn’t think they were bad). It was a big exciting adventure and I was 110% in for it!

I also loved that next to learning more about Sabre-X and how he became guardian of the omelette, we also learn more about Seraphina. About seeing her with the Healing Faerie and their relationship (SQUEEE). Seeing how she was kicked out. See how important she is now. It was a lot of fun, it isn’t just save the omelette and done, nope, it is deeper and it all made me smile. Plus, gave me all the nostalgic vibes because I remember bits about it from when I played Neopets daily.

Oh, and I had a bit of a laugh at the Lion King reference.

The art was oodles of fun, really capturing the Neopets spirit!

All in all, give me many more graphic novels from the Neopia world. There are OODLES of stories still to be shared with the world, there is so much lore in the game and I cannot wait to see them in graphic novel form! I would highly recommend this one to all.

A cute story to add to the lore of Neopia and a site that has managed to hang around for over 2 decades. I liked that the comic series started with one of the early lands on the site and a key feature for all newbies -- the Giant Omelette. Neopians have wondered for years about how it just reappears every day and now we know.

My only note of canonical inconsistency is when the shop wizard mentions a "3/4 cheese omelette." Omelette fractions are only done in thirds, not fourths.

An entertaining read if you grew up playing Neopets or play it today. Gives some lore to classic play as well as introducing backgrounds to characters you’ve seen through out Neopia.

This brought me so much joy. I’ll forever be a huge Neopets fan, even when it’s overwhelming (why did they have Altador cup, the dailies update, AND the festival all at the same time?! I have to work, people!)

This was fun. I hate the font. But it was a good story and brought me a lot of joy.

The code for Grundo’s warehouse is “Cresta”.

I’m not rating because I’m not the target demographic for this, but this was DRIPPING with nostalgia for me. I was a huge neopets lover and it was sweet being able to revisit this world again and with a sapphic subplot?! Cozy and cute.

What a fun addition to the Neopets world!
In this graphic novel, we find out how the Giant Omelette is regenerated each day and when it was almost lost.
This story follows Sabre-X the lupe as he guards the Giant Omelette every day, making sure nobody takes too much, and telling people to come back later when it runs out for the day. But one day, the omelette starts making everyone sick. After a disgraced faerie tries to tell Sabre-X that she may be able to help, they travel to Faerieland to the Healing Springs. But the Healing Faerie is gone and the springs are dried up. They find a map to the volcanoes in Tyrannia, so end up travelling there to find answers.
The characters were so fun, it was great to get to know lesser known ones better and see others out of their own context on the site.
The plot was simple, but satisfying. I had a great time reading it and was intrigued the entire time. The concept of the Giant Omelette was interesting and I really liked how everything turned out.
The artwork was basically an exact match to the website which brought the site right onto the page. I really loved it.
As someone who still dabbles on the site with my 21 year old account, I'm really loving how much effort the new team is putting into the rejuvenation of the site.

This was cute! More middle grade than young adult, honestly, but I don't care. It made me nostalgic (even though I still play for a bit almost everyday).

The plot moved a bit too fast, and YA graphic novels often can be longer than this. This was about 110 pages and could've benefited from being about 160–180.

The art was a bit inconsistent, but better than some of the stuff currently on the site (looking at you The Void Within). Some scenes were very lovely, some were a bit funny looking. Acceptable though.

Overall, everyone say thank you to Rebecca Mix and TNT for finally acknowledging lesbian faeries. If there are only female faeries, they must all be queer—and we all know Illusen and Jhudora are jilted ex-girlfriends. Thankful that this is finally canon!

Side note: This does beg the question for me, based on colour schemes, was the Soup Faerie once a fire faerie? Her design is similar to Seraphina's.

I received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

This graphic novel brought a sense of nostalgia for the online game. The graphic novel itself was a fun read with nods to the website. Readers familiar with Neopets will recognize characters such as Sabre-X, who guards the Giant Omelette to make sure that Neopians don't go hungry. One day, the omelette doesn't appear like it should and, when it finally does, it's rotten! Neopians start to get sick and a disgraced Fire Faerie comes to Sabre-X saying that she can help. It was nice seeing a little backstory and lore to characters that have played a prominent part in my childhood. I loved seeing little baby Sabre-X. This will be fun for Neopets players as well as children who want a fun story about adventure.

I wanted to love this one. Although it was extremely nostalgic, it fell flat for me. I realize I'm not the targeted audience, but I found it to be extremely cheesy (pun intended). I really liked the graphics/drawings and many of the images transported me back to childhood (Did someone say "Destruct-O-Match"!?). I found there were some flaws in the storyline. I also think this book may be more Middle-Grade than Young Adult. Some of the wording was YA, but the story itself is MG in my opinion.

A graphic novel series that is tied in with the famous webcomic Neopets. We join Saber-X, Petpet Fang, and Seraphina (a disgraced Fire Faerie in love with a water one) with the humor that the webcomic has delivered to us. It's a mystery to solve, why the giant omelette has been corrupted, grave things will happen if it's not restored.

If you are a fan of the webcomic you'll appreciate these. Sometimes the font gets really small because of too many panels on a single page.

At first, I thought this was just barely serviceable especially since Neopets has a lot of fun lore to work with.

But I liked the internal struggle Seraphina had with her ostracization, loss of powers, and inability to stop loving as well as the constant conflict with Sabre-X, a former hardened warrior who protects the master emerald the giant omelet with his life.

SN: some of the font is ugly.

as someone who grew up with neopets (and never left, literally went to a 25th birthday party the other day) it is soooo lovely to see it coming back into the light. and this was so cute! enjoyable for kids (or adults!) even if they've never played the game before - good balance of new story and lore explanation. some of the dialog was a bit stilted and awkward which is why we're at 4 stars, but very fun and excited to see what comes next

A great book for Neopets fans with inside jokes and history, plus a Grundo's Warehouse code! And it contains a long-awaited queer relationship. It's probably still readable for non-players but certain bits might not make sense as not everything is fully explained. Very cute art but it loses a star because it feels like the whole story is rushed, like there could be some bits missing to shorten it. A fun read though and I recommend it to any Neopian!

Cute use of a favorite game I played as a kid. The banished fire faerie has to work with a creature from another area to overcome the disaster that will harm all neopets. She also wants to find out why her ex-girlfriend is missing. And maybe get back all she lost if she plays her cards right. In the end, she hooks back up with her ex and all the pets get the omelette back.
Interesting plot. I wasn't into the sub-plot so much. Just not my thing.

This was such a blast from the past. My brother and I were obsessed with Neopets for YEARS. We played daily, including getting our free omelette from the giant omelette. So this was a lot of fun to read.

The story in this was just so lovely and wholesome. I adored the inclusion of sapphic faeries and the whole magical quest was a delight.

It’s a basic story, but it hits the nostalgia spot just right.

This is a cute journey into Neopets territory, and I found it especially nostalgic as a frequent long-time user of the website years ago. I'm not too sure how well it will land for today's current teens, but it's nice to see a resurgence of an incredibly wholesome website. I think this is good for any age - not very intensive, full of cute images, and provides a backstory to one of the most integral parts of the Neopets world.

I received an early copy of this graphic novel from Edelweiss/the publisher - thank you!!
