Undiscovered Country #25-30

Undiscovered Country, Vol. 5: Bounty

Rate this book
Journey into the near future, and an unknown nation that was once the United States of America -- a land that's become shrouded in mystery after walling itself off from the rest of the world without explanation!

As the journey through an altered America continues, the fifth volume of the series finds our heroes trapped in Zone Bounty, a region near the former US heartland tasked with harnessing the nation's agricultural might to feed the rest of the country. But what are the residents of Bounty actually growing, and what are they being fed? This penultimate chapter in the UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY saga provides answers readers have been seeking since the first issue, and twists they will never expect.

Even though it was probably close to one and a half years since I read the previous volume, I didn't have any trouble getting into this continuation of the story, and that is a big praise in itself.

Volume 5: 'Bounty', and the new zone under than name, was a thrilling combination of new and old, both in terms of History and story, with a good amount of action and epic returns, and no less food for thought and important revelations... now that we are just about to reach the end of the story, for good and for bad.

Great fun, great art, good stuff.

Reunited and it feels so...antagonistic. The team finds itself back together in the latest Aurora zone, Bounty, where giants grow all of America's food. But, like all the other zones they've passed through so far, all is not what it seems - and trying to reveal the truth might cost them all their lives.

I think it's very clear what Soule and Snyder are attempting to say about America by now, and this penultimate arc isn't pulling any punches either. The characters are going through the ringer, there's still some last minute plot twists to be had, and I'm extremely curious to see how everything concludes. This is one of those books that I feel is going to live or die on its conclusion - fingers crossed.

The first time I've read any of this comic about the US turning its back on the world and going bugfuck insane since it did that for real, and to be honest, the series feels a little as if it's turned inward too, this volume apparently much more interested in the relationships and histories of the expeditionary party than the giant farmers and gargantuan harvests of Bounty. Though that's still better treatment than a bunch of the other zones get, with the likes of Ministry, Publicity and Theocracy skipped through in a panel each. Was that always the plan, or is the series being wrapped up on an accelerated schedule after the gap in publication? At this point it's probably for the best; I'm not sure the answers we get here were altogether worth the wait.

Snyder & Soule's road trip across an insane America is heading toward the finish line and it gets significantly better in the penultimate chapter. Here, one of the more interesting zones is explored, Bounty, and the outside world finally gets some more panel time. There was some decent character development and some big moments. There are still way too many questions and some odd choices but this was much better than the almost completely awful previous volume. The art was decent but nowhere near where it was earlier in the series. Overall, I am interested to see how this ends but this books squandered a lot of great ideas.

I definitely wait to long to read these, in between volumes. I barely remember the characters but I remember the sky virus and Aurora quest to get to the center. Look, Snyder is not in top form, I feel like the series is just a little clunky now and not super interesting. Once I remembered this series a bit as I read, it got a little better. They are now in the Bounty land with giants on a train to aurora... A train full of food... yeah that's not suspicious or anything. So they make it past Bounty land and are finally getting to Aurora in the next volume. I will be happy to finish this up. Art is Meh, Story is so so at this point.

Re-read continues:

This volume is a return to a form. Is the world the characters exist in still so insane it’s nonsensical? Yes. Do some things still just happen (Daniel showing up) you wish there was more time to explore? Also yes. Despite all this, is it still a ton of fun, features great emotional arcs for multiple characters, and keeps up the commentary/exploration of America? Yes!

I really did like this volume, with the final moments between Chang and Janet and Pavel’s history being particular highlights. Time for the finale!

I've been waiting for this one! We're now in Zone Bounty of the United States in Undiscovered Country Vol 5. But this land of plenty, much like the other zones in America, holds a dark secret behind the happiness of its citizens. I really enjoyed this volume. Like the others, it shows how one person sought to "fix" the world, but learned it's unfixable with their path. I honestly can't wait for Vol 6. Not sure if it will be the final volume, but it will definitely be well worth the wait!

One last trip to a weird zone in the dystopian United States as Aurora’s plans are, well, still anybody’s guess. A fun series, but the characters are still not all that interesting in their own right.

I’m ready for this series to wrap up. This volume was not as strong as previous ones and had a cheating feel with the two page spread that shoehorned the introduction to other districts. I hope the final volume closes out the story in a worthwhile manner.

It kind of seems this series is just limping to the finish line. Not unlike the train cars full of food sent to nowhere...

The fifth volume in this series offers more food for thought, and leaves me interested to see how the series will end, as for all the answers that were given, there are still a number of questions to answer, and the final resolution is uncertain.
