A heart wrenching bloodfest, high fantasy meets samurai sci-fi in an allegorical war story. Two brutal tribes, Roto versus Paznina, blur the line between good and evil. It's incredibly sad, deep, and exciting. And the illustrations are downright impressive.

Jerome, the heartbroken, bloodthirsty father. Thea, the daughter and damaged artist. Rollo, the son and shameful pacifist. Hobbie, the conflicted yet faithful sergeant. Shiloh, the compassionate, murderous robot. They're real, hurt, and relatable. And damn if I didn't deeply care for these characters in one volume.

Finally collected in a long-awaited Deluxe edition for all 12 issues, the series begs for additional stories after such incredible development and world building. You hear me, DWJ? We want more!

Daniel Warren Johnson is a true master of his craft! I have been wanting to read Extremity but have been waiting for the complete edition and boy am I glad it’s here. This action packed, gore filled, and heartfelt journey is exactly what the doctor ordered. I think this is my favorite work of his that I have read! Highly recommended!

Extremity é um quadrinho escrito e desenhado por Daniel Warren Johnson, publicado no Brasil de maneira integral (edições 1 a 12) pela editora Devir, no ano de 2025. Essa HQ trabalha temas pesados e complexos, como: violência, luto, ódio, família, superação e perdão; tudo isso ambientado em um mundo com vibe de Mad Max e Blade Runner, que mistura a escassez do pós-apocalíptico com tecnologias futuristas, bem como espécies de animais e monstros presentes na fantasia.

Na história, acompanhamos a família principal dos Rotos, um dos clãs desse universo, que é composta pelo Pai Jerome – melancólico e cercado pelo ódio; sua filha Thea (protagonista) - que é marcada pelo ódio e o trauma de perder sua arte; e seu outro filho, Rollo – benevolente e com habilidades tecnológicas. Sendo esse o núcleo familiar que irá conduzir a narrativa, com momentos mais focados em Thea e Rollo.

A família é caracterizada como traumatizada e cheia de ódio após sofrer um ataque do clã Paznina, que ocorre previamente a HQ e é contada ao leitor por meio de flashbacks. É a partir dessas lembranças, que entendemos as motivações dos personagens e o quanto eles perderam: Jerome perdeu sua esposa, Thea perdeu sua arte – que até então era sua vida e sua motivação; e Rollo perdeu sua família, pois esses foram redefinidos, e levaram Rollo para essa corrupção de suas personalidades.

É com esse panorama que vamos acompanhar uma história de vingança envolvendo os Rotos contra os Pazninas, que a cada confronto, mostra-se como o ódio foi cegando cada vez mais o Jerome, que paralelamente sucumbia sua filha junto, e tentava corromper Rollo. Em diversos momentos, essa corrupção é explorada nos personagens, que estão vivendo momentos diferentes do luto, seja com sofrimento, raiva ou melancolia.

A HQ impressiona ao tratar do ciclo de violência, ódio e vingança entre os protagonistas e os antagonistas – lembrando até outras obras da cultura pop – mas traz o diferencial da ficção cientifica e fantasia, bem como ser bem explicito como esse ciclo causa perdas e reinicia o sofrimento das pessoas do entorno dos indivíduos que morreram.

Outro tema relevante, é a construção de mundo que o Daniel realiza, pois o Rollo, além de facilidade com tecnologias, também é fascinado por história, e vive estudando livros e artes dos povos anteriores ao mundo do quadrinho. Assim, o tema de estudar história para se tornar uma pessoa mais consciente e ser critico ao interpretar o presente, é algo interessante da HQ, além de deixar possibilidades desse mundo de Extremity ser maior do que exposto na HQ.

Além disso, a obra ainda dá uma piscadela para temas como a exploração ambiental e o avanço tecnológico de forma predatória, com grupos compostos de certos privilégios que detém os recursos necessários para viver, enquanto outros são destinados a sobreviver com restos.

Ademais, a história trabalha com aspectos ritualísticos de predestinação, como se fossem papeis a serem seguidos pelos personagens (no caso dos Rotos), assim, eles ganham títulos que definem suas personalidades e ações. Esse elemento é bem interessante, pois faz o leitor refletir e acompanhar como isso define, ou não, as ações dos personagens e como eles influenciam em seus papeis.

Por fim, sinto que a HQ poderia ter explorado mais os antagonistas, pois eles são interessantes, mas não tem tanto desenvolvimento, ficando apenas retratados em flashbacks e posteriormente como reacionários as ações dos Rotos. A HQ também finaliza com um gancho que pode ser explorado no futuro, que serve como reflexão do tema do ciclo de violência que foi trabalhado durante a trama.

Madre mía qué barbaridad de tebeo, sustentado sobre todo en una puesta en página portentosa. Esta historia de venganza en un mundo postapocalíptico, de extremidad por extremidad hasta terminar todos desangrados, es un compendio intachable del talento de Daniel Warren Johnson para el dibujo. Su garra al plasmar las peleas, las batallas, la tortura, las persecuciones es tan potente como su delicadeza al ilustrar las escenas más intimistas, donde unos jóvenes acogotados por la orgía de represalias desatada a su alrededor terminan buscando alternativas o, simplemente, refugio. Si no le doy cinco estrellas es porque el guión no termina de estar a la altura de ese despliegue... Aunque la estructura sobre la que se sostiene me parece muy bien pensada, ciertas soluciones y recursos terminan resultando demasiado simplistas. Algo particularmente doloroso con un final abrupto que no está a la altura del clímax de unas páginas antes. No llega a frustrar pero tuerce un poco un tebeo que, a todas las referencias que se han dado, sumaría algunas historias de Grendel, particularmente el descomunal Grendel Tales firmado por Darko Macan y Edvin Biukovic. Que a un dibujo deslumbrante sumaba una historia todavía más demoledora (y mejor cerrada) sobre el vacío y absurdo de la violencia y la venganza como motores vitales.

Entiendo que se haya agotado tan rápido. Me cuesta comprender cómo no hay una reedición ya en las tiendas.

Extremity is a hugely thrilling and terrifically dark fantasy narrative that's neatly contained in this hefty, handsome deluxe edition (though I'd be happy to see the universe expand in future stories). It essentially depicts a blasted future/past where small clans eke out a living on floating islands and spend much of their time living within an "eye for an eye" ethos. Can the next generation get away from this cycle of revenge?

For almost all of the book, the answer is a firm "No." These characters, even the young ones who you're rooting for, remain steadfastly determined to kill their foes (and their children). This naturally leads to a huge amount of violence - Extremity is not for the squeamish. It also leads to a genuinely unpredictable narrative, because where a typical story would insert a "lesson learned" moment, Extremity goes in the opposite direction, doubling down on death.

I guess it's not exactly a fun read, but it's compelling and inventive. The world building is especially strong - again, I'd love more! Along with the quality writing, Daniel Warren Johnson's sometimes rough artwork perfectly matches the tone of the story. Strong recommend for those who want a mean read (though there's a hint of a happy ending).

I really wanted to start the new year with something that I felt would warrant a first-of-the-year read, and this did the trick.

A tale of cultures constantly clashing, with vivid art and an abundance of gore and destruction really driving home the intensity of these conflicts. It really makes you see how senseless, and pointless the whole revenge path can be- even if it takes some more time than others to see.

Amazing art, amazing characters in an amazing world. I strongly suggest folks take this title for a spin. You won’t be disappointed.

This was a pretty fun read! Murder Falcon is one of my favorite comic stories, so I had to check out this one.

Usually I’m not into comics that have this much action, this one was still a bit too much. The pacing was fantastic which was great. The art is an A+ as always by DWJ.

He always knows how to pack in emotional moments to keep you invested, the same is true for this story.

Overall I enjoyed this one. It’s probably now my 2nd favorite DWJ comic after Murder Falcon.

Too much action for me, I would have loved more interaction between characters and less blood and viscera.

Sí que llegar a esta obra tras leer su Wonder Woman y Beta Ray Bill, le resta algo de sorpresa e impacto a Extremity. Daniel Warren Johnson traslada BASTANTE a esas obras "de encargo". Pero no se puede negar el sentimiento especial que desborda cada página y capítulo de esta historia por parte del autor. Que busca trasladar todo lo posible una visión intimista a una demencial épica post apocalíptica que sabe a conocido y nuevo a la vez. Se referencia bastante a Mad Max y el estudio Ghibli. Sobre todo este último entiendo que es por lo emocional del enfoque y sus personajes. Pero lo genial de Daniel Warren Johnson es que logra asimilar bastante bien la herencia manganime pasada por el filtro occidental y del mercado comic book USA y haciéndolo totalmente suyo. Este mundo regido nuevamente por un pensamiento puramente feudal y belicoso, no deja de sorprender con maravillas tecnológicas, mágicas o monstruosidades, las cuales se permean en los conflictos humanos como en el que nos implicaremos con los personajes protagonistas. Empezando por Thea, una Artista que en una venganza entre Clanes lo pierde todo, empezando por su "herramienta" para crear su arte. La cual se intercambiará por otra más proclive a los objetivos de Venganza de su Padre y Líder del Clan Roto. Está claro que ya el personaje de Thea, remarca bastante la particularidad de esta historia. Sí que Extremity busca alcanzar un pensamiento anti belicista, pero también es cierto que Warren Johnson no quiere rehuir de la acción y visceralidad del conflicto. Siendo un artista que reina en un apartado visual de pura acción y espectacularidad. Pero tampoco se puede decir que Extremity se venda como lo que no es. El autor logra mantener en todo momento diálogos y escenas que buscan dejar claro que lo relevante en esta historia es en buscar un punto y a parte en los ciclos de Odio en el que se ven arrastrados inocentes y herederos de quienes lanzaron la primera piedra. La obra nunca busca ser totalmente agradable, porque terminar con décadas de muertes y heridas innecesarias, no puede serlo.

Extremity despliega un deleite visual constante gracias también al trabajo del colorista. Pero ojalá quedarse sobre todo con sus personajes y fondo argumental. El cual en sus 12 números sí que puede que hubiese interesado profundizar más en el conflicto personal de Thea redescubriéndose a sí misma. Pero creo que deja bien claro su objetivo de buscar Crear y no Destruir.

Questa è la mia seconda esperienza con Warren Johnson, dopo aver letto Murder Falcon, che quasi tutti considerano il suo masterpiece, non mi aspettavo un'opera di quel livello quando ho iniziato questa lettura.
Sono felice però di aver smentito le mie preoccupazioni, perchè per me questo volume è anche superiore a quella citata in precedenza. Sarà che io sono un fan dello sci-fi, di queste ambientazioni, e del genere. Sarà che mi sono sentito molto coinvolto dalle preoccupazioni dei protagonisti, ma a me questo volume è piaciuto ancora di più.
L'unica nota amara a mio parere è proprio il fatto che questo volume sia abbastanza breve, poichè avrie voluto continuare a leggere ancora e ancora storie ambientate in questo universo, con i suoi protagonisti.
Mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere più approfondite la mitologia, la storia e i vari popoli che abitano queste terre.

Johnson è un maestro nel concepire creature, armi e veicoli fuori di testa. Penso sia veramente un genio da questo punto di vista, e come sempre dietro tutta questa brutalità, dietro robottoni, creature spaventose, sangue, mazzate, armi e esplosioni si nasconde una grande emotività che non può fare che coinvolgerti. La storia di Thea, dei suoi genitori, di suo fratello, chi ha perso la propria strada a causa del dolore, che invece l'ha ritrovata, chi in un nuovo amico ha visto aprirsi le porte del futuro, chi invece si arrende ai suoi peccati e chi invece ricade sempre negli stessi. Tutti personaggi magnifici e costruiti molto bene, sono davvero felice di aver letto questo volume.

Does Daniel Warren Johnson know how to do visceral high-concept sci-fi or what? That question was rhetorical because anyone with even a casual interest in comics - or anyone with eyeballs, really - knows that Johnson's the absolute master of kinetic action scenes and heartbreaking familial drama set within immersive strange worlds. "Extremity," an all-too-topical story about warring clans of everyday people forced by circumstances into being ruthless soldiers, has it all: crazy kaiju-esque monsters, thrilling space battles, and brutal combat as well as tender explorations of grief, commitment, and spirituality. Few creators are as confident and adept as Johnson when it comes to balancing violence with emotional payoffs. I loved this series - it's a page-turner, for sure - and would love to see DWJ explore this intricate and savage world a bit more someday (who knows when, though, because he's been an absolute juggernaut the past few years, cranking out a wide variety of stories). I can't wait to dig into the supplemental "Extremity" books I have in my collection.

ADDENDUM: I just finished reading DWJ's "The Art Of Extremity" (which isn't listed on Goodreads, for some reason) and I HIGHLY recommend checking it out. SO many beautiful sketches and concept drawings and little insights into the making of the series. Really supplements the comic nicely.

Una odisea de violencia tan descarnada como molona que sabe cuándo echar el freno ante el trauma generacional que viven los protagonistas.

Warren-Johnson construye un mundo fascinante tan inspirado por Mad Max que hasta replica el no saber demasiado de él y que no te haga falta más. Conoces lo mínimo para saber quién es quién por qué son como son, el estado actual del mundo y su tecnología... es una travesía tan dura como preciosa cuyo único defecto es echar el cierre con demasiada bulla. Apenas da tiempo a digerir el último compás y de repente PUM, se acabó. Abrupto de más para mi gusto, pero se ha convertido en una de mis historias de venganza favoritas. No cuenta nada nuevo en ese sentido, pero DWJ cuando quiere llegar a lo más hondo lo logra siempre (y con creces).

Todo esto no quita, como digo al principio, que haya momentos FUCK YEAH donde el autor se vuelve majara y regala unas splash pages de aúpa. En ese sentido, en parte por el formato de publicación, creo que su mejor trabajo es 'Wonder Woman: Tierra Muerta', pero aquí no se queda corto para nada.

Total: chulísimo y compra obligada.

Dopo aver letto Transformers (in corso), Jurassic League, Murder Falcon, Beta Ray Bill e infine Extremity, posso dire che Daniel Warren Johnson stia diventando il mio sceneggiatore di fumetti preferito.

Extremity è una storia che parla di vendetta, perdita, dolore, identità e rottura di circoli viziosi in modo eccelso e ogni personaggio ha il suo spazio e una caratterizzazione che evolve in modo semplice, ma sempre efficace.

Il worldbuilding di questo mondo devastato dalle guerre tra clan è pazzesco e a fine volume non si può che sperare di vederne ancora.

La parte artistica è come al solito fuori di testa, DWJ dà il meglio di sé nelle scene con mostri o elementi tecnologici, con un dinamismo spettacolare nelle battaglie.

Unico neo per me è stata l'edizione Ramen Burger di SaldaPress in bianco e nero, che non mi ha permesso di deliziarmi dei colori di Mike Spicer, con cui Johnson ormai collabora costantemente, ma dal poco che ho visto su Google, posso dire che Spicer ha fatto centro anche questa volta.

Una vera perla, consigliato a tutt*.

Came into this because I'm a big fan of DWJ's work on Do a Power Bomb and Transformers, but was a bit disappointed here. This was originally published in 2017 but it feels just as timely as ever, illustrating the ridiculous cycles of violence perpetuated by people and groups that really have more in common than not. I read this as an allegory of Israel vs Palestine, but I'm sure you can substitute any two groups and see largely the same takeaways. The artwork is impressive, DWJ's style works well here with all of the gore, large battle scenes and blend of technology with big monsters. But ultimately I think the story falls kind of flat. There's a lot to say about how war and violence damages people and pushes them into an endless back and forth of vengeance, and how that sphere of destruction grows to encompass more than just the aggrieved parties. There's another group of people who have decided to live pacifist lives, so there's a glimmer of hope there. But the book ends mostly in a punch up where most people die horribly. I guess that might be the point.

Everything about Extremity is iconic, epic, and beautiful. Grand layouts and design concepts, brutal action, fully fleshed out characters fill every page. Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer have put on a stunning show for twelve issues. Thea and Rollo’s arcs have been satisfying and fully formed. The story was great, not because of the creatures or mechs, but because of the story of vengeance that feels human and relatable. This final issue, as well as the series itself, took us through twists and turns and tugged at our heart strings. Extremity started as a brutal and tragic sci-fi war epic. It ended up having a lot more to say about family, tradition, and purpose. While it’s a pretty satisfying ending to the series, it feels like DWJ could stay in this world forever and has plenty of story left to tell.

This was incredible, dare I say extreme?!

What an amazing pace: The story starts on a very small scale, introduce the enemies one by one, all to be hated for their butchery. Then the story widens and you see other perspectives to the story. This is all coupled with crazy action panels.

The comic sprinkles little pieces of the full picture here and there. This kind of world building really works here, especially in a story that only spans 12 issues.

I should also emphasise the amazing panels in here. Most issues feature at least one breathtaking double page spread and there's multiple 'Hell yeah' moments. There's also incredible tragedy and loss portrayed here.

While I think very much intentional, I didn’t love the ambiguity of the ending. That being said, I loved pretty much everything else. Even though Jerome and Nim are pretty singular in their drives and motivations, I loved the greater nuances of Thea, Rollo, Shiloh, and Meshiba. The art feels quasi-cinematic at times, where you can really feel the momentum of action-heavy battles and the spectacle of the alien landscapes and creatures and technology. DWJ, as the dual threat author/writer, really knocks his materials out of the park, but I think that’s always largely because there’s a soul at the core of his pieces that feels earnest, broken, and always still hopeful. Heartily recommend this one with the caveat that it’s QUITE violent.

Am I a huge DWJ fanboy? Yeah!

Have I been waiting for the complete edition of this book for years? Hell Yeah!

Can you expect me to give a rational, well-thought out review of Extremity? Absolutely Not!

DWJ is among my top 3 favourite comicbook writers right now and everything he writes is an instant classic in my book. Extremity Deluxe Edition is well worth the price. The paper used is good quality, the range of covers at the end is respectable and the story and artwork are fabulous. DWJ continues to show us all how to write hard-hitting stories. If you loved Murder Falcon and Wonder Woman - Dead Earth, you'll love Extremity.

This is the earliest work of Johnson's I've read, but it's still fantastic. A great story about the endless cycle of pain perpetuated by those seeking revenge, as two dueling clans ratchet up the violence against each other, with no regard to the harm they cause to themselves. Johnson's art here is fantastic as always, and I find myself impressed again by his ability to balance it with great, meaningful storytelling.

Me ha gustado mucho. Es verdad que el dibujo de DWJ no me vuelve loco (debo ser de los pocos), pero la historia fluye muy bien, es un mundo imaginativo, es ameno... En fin, una historia futurista con monstruos, buen guión, ritmo... Se disfruta

Wow. What an incredible book. My boss lent me this one and said it was one of DWJ's best and he wasn't kidding. Damn, this one got me all in the feels. And seeing DWJ's detailed artwork... Always a treat. Do yourself a favor. Read this one.

I really didn’t want this to end. A really powerful and moving story of revenge, grief, and moving on. This was a great look at how far revenge drags people. I really enjoyed this read and I burned through it fairly quickly. Big recommend

On the surface, this was a pretty standard vengeance and redemption story but it was surprisingly engrossing and really dragged me into its world. The art was magnificently detailed and intricate, reminiscent of Walter Simonson. I loved the multiple double page spreads.

Another recommendation and am still impressed by Daniel Warren Johnson. A heart wrenching, dystopian story about vengeance, loss, hope and family. But also big creatures, killer robots, and sapphic!!!
