Julie: My Journal

Rate this book
When fifth-grader Julie discovers that girls aren’t allowed on the basketball team at her new school, she’s determined to change the rules . . . but making new friends is harder, now that her parents are (shhh!) divorced.

Julie isn't thrilled about moving to an apartment above her mom's shop in San Francisco. She misses her old bedroom, her best friend, Ivy--and her dad, now that her parents are divorced. Then she discovers that her new school has a basketball team! But when Julie tries to sign up, the coach says the team is for boys only. Talk about unfair! Maybe she can't do anything about the move, but Julie's determined to find a way to change the coach's mind.

"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."

For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."

Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."

More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.

Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.

Julie’s life has changed, her parents divorced, she had to move to a small apartment, she’s at a new school and away from her best friend Ivy. Now at school all she wants to do is join the boys basketball team but the coach won’t let her.

This was really interesting I liked the new style of book with it being all of Julie’s inner thoughts and feelings and what’s going on in her life. I enjoyed reading it, it felt like a great addition to her original book series and helped fill in some of the parts within it.

It had really cute doodles and illustrations throughout which I really enjoyed looking at, it made the journal really feel like it was her own personal journal. I liked that it shared both the good and the bad things that were going on in her life at that particular time.

The book was a good easy read, I think it’s a very clever creation, I am so happy her original book writer created this one also, it made it really feel like we were with Julie. I also like her essay at the back talking about the famous sports women of her era that she admired, that was such a creative touch to add that in.

This is a cute retelling of Julie's first story! Unlike her abridged book, everything from the original 'Meet Julie' is here. Much of the dialogue is kept. I miss the realistic illustrations, but the cartoony look works for a book like this. Seeing her new outfits was fun... especially her classic one! I also enjoyed finally getting to see Hank, the Water Fountain Girls and Principal Sanchez. This was a great read and I'm excited to see of AG releases more journals for the other Historicals!
