Margery Cuyler is the author of many books for children, including From Here to There, The Little Dump Truck, and That’s Good! That’s Bad! The idea for That’s Good! That’s Bad! was inspired by a conversation with her son, Thomas, who asked, "Can't bad things change into good things?" Ms. Cuyler grew up in the oldest house in Princeton, NJ, and started writing stories as soon as she learned how to write. She now lives in the same house with her husband, sons and two cats.

Children's first chapter book, Realistic fiction. Addy is in second grade and loves numbers. She is looking forward to the school's math night event, until she finds out that the teacher is assigning partners and she won't be able to work with her best friend. Addy gets assigned to work with Willard Gluck. There are troubles every step of the way as Willard is absent on project brainstorming day, their first project attempt gets completely wiped out, and they have to go with a plan B.

This was a decent story, but I have mixed feelings on the Willard character. Does his portrayal as the sickly, awkward, late boy evoke compassion/empathy or is it more of a stereotype? Addy has low expectations but he does come through (multiple times) in the end. The fact that his last name rhymes with Yuck doesn't help things. As for readability, the font is definitely larger than standard, which is great for early or struggling readers. There is not a lot of illustration support (avg. every 4 to 5 pages), but there is a character guide upfront and a word glossary with pronunciation guide in the back.

A huge thank you to #NetGalley and #Simon&Schuster for an advanced readers copy of #AddyMcbean:NumbersQueen in exchange for my honest opinion.

As a teacher I am always looking for books to introduce into my classroom for my students and I cannot wait to bring this story into my classroom. What I thoroughly enjoyed about this story is how easy to read. The chapters were quick to read but also engaging. There was something always happening in each chapter. I loved that math was incorporated and I love that the main character Addy learned how to work together and get to know someone she doesn’t normally work with. Overall this story was so enjoyable.

This was a good, but forgettable story about a girl named Addy who loves numbers. She is tasked with creating a project about 2d and 3d shapes with an assigned partner who she is not excited about. At first, working together is hard, but when they ruin their project in the final hour, they pull together to make it work!
