I am new to fashion reading of any kind, but it has been delightful! I didn’t expect reads from / about haute couture to be so practical to daily dressing. Coco Chanel was an interesting woman who really nailed simplicity in style. It was fun to learn more about her life and inspiration for many pieces of clothing we see every day. Thanks to this book, I added a pink tweed suit and Breton top to my style wishlist.
I’m my opinion it’s a 5 star! For years I’ve been trying to find some resources on what Coco Chanel thought was important in her fashion style. However, because the brand has been brought back to life by Karl Lagerfeld and his modern interpretation, it was really hard to find the basic information. I’m not a huge fan of what the brand has become and love the most classic pieces linked to what Gabrielle Chanel actually invented, even the quilted bag without a logo. If you’re looking for a shirt book with some basic historical information and a description the essential pieces Coco Chanel introduced in fashion, this is the book. It also includes some examples and advice on how you can incorporate them into your wardrobe, although that also is quite basic. I highly recommend it.
While the names of luxury fashion designers that include Chanel have become popular coffee table decor, Hannah Roger’s (2023) Coco Chanel :The Style Principles is not one of those Chanel books to set aside as interior decor. While a few assertions question what readers may or may not be likely to afford left me unsettled and I may have desired to see more photos of the high stakes Chanel fashion noted, the text carries a charismatic and informative tone that is equally flattering and empowering so readers are inclined to embrace fashion in a way that is authentically their own. Whether influenced or inspired by Chanel, Rogers respectfully reinforces that comfort and confidence are just as essential to wearing fashion and establishing style as deciding on textures and colors. Roger’s offers several golden fashion nuggets that suggest fashion is not imitation, but rather inspiration and influence. She delivers fashion highlights in a way that takes pressure off of the need to overindulge in logos or to by any means necessary just settle for the knockoff. Overall, this was an engaging read. I particularly commend the way the author intricately weaves intimate details of Chanel’s background and her historical influence with subtle fashion advice. Roger’s delightfully crafts a significant and sophisticated balance of narrative storytelling and fashion journalism in a way that makes Coco Chanel The Silver Principle informative and fashionably empowering!
Based on the Table of Contents and handful of introductory pages I was able to read in this advanced copy, I expect this book will be a lovely and thorough look into the history of Chanel and the designer’s styling. I am looking forward to checking this book out upon publication and will likely give more stars once I can accurately review.
