Beautifully illustrated with many photos of pretty homes aligned with the authors’ design philosophy. Not at all my style, though.

I found the houses shown in here dead boring. Sooo many neutrals and relentlessly desaturated color palettes. Lots of idyllic-rustic-chic and artfully rundown pieces. Tons of blank walls in bland colors. Very European in the general hodgepodge of the decor. Not much contrast, either. No bright colors. The “spring” and “summer” style suggestions run together with little to distinguish one season from the other. The autumn and winter sections are more distinct but still focus on that samey look. For a book about seasonality in decoration, there sure is a lot of conformity in this book.

The photography is pretty, if obnoxiously muted. In the way of home magazines, everything is styled to look as if no one actually lives in any of the houses. The photographs are laid out quite neatly on each page. Pages are full but not crowded. The text is arranged so that full paragraphs are kept together, which makes for very natural stopping points to pause and study the photos.

Some actionable styling tips to bring touches of the outside and the turn of the year into your home. That’s nice. I’ve been trying to live more seasonally, and I find it’s been quite lovely. I did find it funny that the writers kicked off the book with “studies show connecting with nature is healthy” and then didn’t bother actually citing any studies. They could have simply made the assertion that it’s good and left that as an element of their design philosophy. They didn’t have to completely half-ass a psychology angle.

The book is also very northern. I don’t know how else to describe it. For example, the discussion of summer made it abundantly clear that the writers do not live in places that get very hot. As someone who does live in a hot place, I find nothing about summer to be “muted” or “delicate”. Also, how many times can you talk about sheepskins in one book? I don’t think I know a single person who owns a sheepskin.

Three stars. This is fine. More of a coffee table book than anything else. I like jewel tones too much to be a fan of this book, and I hate rooms with too much white and beige. Even the photos with pops of color look muted in here. This is certainly not the style I will use to decorate my current and future homes.

Fabulous book with sublime photos and simple tricks and tips. It's a book I shall return to. My 11 year old creative daughter also enjoyed it, and kindled her love of interior design and (in her words) the 'aesthetics'. Bravo Kay!
