Following Christ is not merely a way to ‘get to heaven’. Heaven is, however, the place to which all Christians are destined. How then should this knowledge affect the way we approach the Christian life?
Octavius Winslow here explores the biblical teaching that the Christian life is a journey, and what it means for Christians to be ‘spiritual voyagers’.
In these pages, readers will find wise, practical, and vividly illustrated teachings on the obstacles Christians will likely face as they follow Jesus, and the means by which they may overcome such obstacles and make progress in their Christian lives, settings their minds on things above.
' Help Heavenward , a practical handbook on sanctification with heaven ever in view, is devotional writing at its finest. I know of no better book to give to Christians as they struggle in this sinful world to live in obedience to their Saviour. Use this book to become acquainted with those sacred truths of Scripture that the Spirit uses to mould our thoughts, words, and actions for Christlike living.' – Joel R. Beeke in the Foreword
Octavius Winslow (1 August 1808 – 5 March 1878), also known as "The Pilgrim's Companion", was a prominent 19th-century evangelical preacher in England and America. A Baptist minister for most of his life and contemporary of Charles Spurgeon and J. C. Ryle, he seceded to the Anglican church in his last decade.
Octavius Winslow’s books are a joy to read. The last two books I’ve read by him are almost poetic at times. They are saturated with scripture and the language he uses warms your heart. I really enjoyed this work. He covers a variety of topics in 200 pages, ultimately seeking to help Christians on their journey to heaven. Would recommend reading this or his book on spiritual decline to get an intro to Winslow.
