معظمها طغى عليها العلم.

ينطلق هذا البحث من أطروحة دكتوراه في مسار فلسفة القيم، امتدّت سنوات من القراءة لجرد مئات المصادر التاريخية والفلسفية والأدبية الغربية، لكتابة "قصة نشوء الأخلاق المدنية في الحضارة الغربية" منذ الجذور اليونانية حتى تحولات الحداثة.
يعيد البحث تركيب السجال الطويل بين الأخلاق والدين، كاشفًا كيف تشكّلت رؤى أخلاقية مدنية متحرّرة تدريجيًا من المرجعيات الدينية، عبر مسار متدرّج يبدأ من الأساطير الهومرية والمدارس الفلسفية اليونانية، مرورًا بالعصرين الروماني والمسيحي الوسيط، ثم عصر النهضة والإصلاح الديني والأنوار، وصولًا إلى عصر الحداثة، وما رافقها من أيدولوجيات العلمانية، والماركسية، والوضعية، والعدمية النيتشوية.
يحلّل البحث أسباب نشوء الأخلاق المدنية وانفصالها المبكِّر عن الدين، وأنماط هذا الانفصال في كل طور تاريخي، ثم يتتبّع المرجعيات الجديدة التي تأسست عليها الأخلاق بعد علمنة الفضاء العام: العقل، الطبيعة، العلم، الشعور، الدولة/القانون، الإنسانوية، الطبقة الاجتماعية، العدمية. كما يدرس الغايات التي سعت إليها هذه الأخلاق (المعرفة، الخير الأسمى، السعادة، الفضيلة، المنفعة، القوة، العدالة، واللا-غاية)، ويستخلص السمات المركزية للأخلاق المدنية الغربية، وعلى رأسها الفردانية، والنسبية، والإنسانية المجردة من الانتماء الديني.
ومن خلال هذا التفكيك التاريخي-الفلسفي يقدّم البحث قراءة نقدية هادئة للفكر الغربي من داخل نصوصه التأسيسية، وفي الوقت نفسه يعيد مساءلة المسلّمات الشائعة في الخطاب الثقافي العربي الإسلامي حول حتمية اقتران الأخلاق بالدين، مقترحًا إطارًا أوسع لفهم إمكانات التلاقي والاختلاف بين الأخلاق الدينية والأخلاق المدنية في عصر عالمي واحد.

This study emerges from a doctoral dissertation in the field of value theory and moral philosophy. It is the result of several years of extensive reading and the examination of hundreds of historical, philosophical, and literary sources in the Western tradition, with the aim of reconstructing “the genealogy of civil ethics in Western civilization” from its Greek foundations to the transformations of modernity.
The research reassembles the long-standing debate between ethics and religion, revealing how civil moral visions gradually detached themselves from religious frameworks. It traces a cumulative historical trajectory beginning with Homeric myth and the Greek philosophical schools, passing through the Roman and medieval Christian eras, and then the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Enlightenment, culminating in modernity and its accompanying ideologies: secularism, Marxism, positivism, and Nietzschean nihilism.
The study analyzes the underlying causes that led to the rise of civil ethics and its early separation from religion, as well as the distinct patterns this separation took across different historical epochs. It then examines the new foundations upon which morality was reconstructed after the secularization of the public sphere-reason, nature, science, sentiment, the state and positive law, humanism, social class, and nihilism. It also investigates the ends pursued by these ethical systems: knowledge, the summum bonum, happiness, virtue, utility, power, justice, and even the negation of any ultimate end. From this analysis, the research extracts the defining features of Western civil morality, foremost among them individualism, relativism, and a conception of humanity stripped of confessional identity.
Through this historical–philosophical deconstruction, the study offers a calm, text-based critical reading of Western moral thought from within its foundational works. At the same time, it reopens the question—often taken for granted in modern Arab–Islamic cultural discourse—of the presumed necessity of linking morality to religion, proposing instead a broader framework for understanding the possible intersections, divergences, and mutual enrichments between religious ethics and civil ethics in an increasingly interconnected global age.
