Robert Essig is the author of 30 books such as Baby Fights, Disco Rice, and Master of Bodies, which was nominated for a Splatterpunk Award. He has published over 130 short stories and edited three anthologies. Robert lives with his family in east Tennessee.
Robert’s created a varied collection of horrifying tales in his new book “Sick! Sick! Sick!”
Some of them were a little too strange for my tastes, but some were seriously disturbing and scary. “Blood Expectations”, “Pacify Her”, and “Wrapped in Plastic” were my favourites and were shocking in their vileness and brutality.
This collection of seven stories by Robert Essig is, in TOC order, sick & twisted, sick & bizarre, sick & nasty, sick & wrong, sick & awesome, sick & horrifying, and straight-up sick, dude.
Sick! Sick! Sick! is for extreme horror fans only. It’s a sick collection of sick little stories to twist your mind, your intestinal fortitude, and your self-image when you laugh at stuff you realize you probably shouldn’t have. I do not want to know what it says about me that I enjoyed this collection (“Blowout” was my favorite; great plot, fantastically written, some underlying poignancy). These stories range from basic sick premise (as with “Wrapped in Plastic”) to brilliant (the aforementioned “Blowout,” but “120 Days” has surprising poignant depth as well) to gut-wrenching on an evocative level (you don’t expect that with a story titled “Blood Expectations,” but yeah, wrenching stuff).
Essig’s cleverness and diversity in writing never fails to impress. His ability to inspire thought, engage emotions, and turn one’s stomach, sometimes simultaneously, is one of the things that puts him high on my list of go-to authors. Another such thing is he is a fantastic storyteller.
Extreme horror fans will love the stories in Robert Essig’s Sick! Sick! Sick!.
Seven sick and twisted stories from the mind of Robert Essig. I had a lot of fun gagging with this collection. Here's three stories that stood out for me
1) My 6000 Pound Wife: Rod loves his wife Maddy. One day he realizes that she's gained a little weight which isn't a bad thing. She demands him to feed her some breakfast and he gets to cooking. When he comes back to see her, she somehow has gained much more weight. -- This one was bizarre and gross! Towards the end you want to puke but it was a really fun one.
2) Blowout: Todd was invited to his first blowout party and he was extatic to finally be able to go! Taking some lines of meth, he hops on a bus and heads to the secret location. Once there he notices it's a frat house and things quickly start. -- There's a whole new meaning to blowout for me! Brain matter makes me happy and this was full of it. Absolutely loved this one!
3) Pacify Her: Alexis makes her money by selling herself to random men. It's how she provides for her baby. She meets Tommy and says for $1000 bucks, he can do anything. What Tommy has in mind is nothing Alexis could have imagined. -- This was repulsive in the best way. The Kink in here is something that people do enjoying doing, except, it usually doesn't end in carnage.
This was an excellent collection from Essig. Each story was great. I love when he does gross because he does it so well! Go pick this up for a gross out time.
Some of these have a bizarro feel to them, there were 2 stories I just couldn’t take to but the others were quite good extreme horror / bizarre shorts. Overall a quick fun read.
It’s been so long since I’ve stayed up past my normal bedtime to devour a book, but Sick! Sick! Sick! is absolutely disgusting, fast-paced, and everything I love in a short story series. I finished it in one sitting because the writing was superb and the content was like a train wreck, impossible to peel your eyes away from. There’s no telling how many times I finished one of the short stories and said “what the f*k….” Because, seriously, wtf did I just read and why tf did I love it so much?! This content is not for the faint of heart. This is eXtreme, with a big capital X, horror. So if you like poop, guts, and reptilian frat boys, then you should read Sick! Sick! Sick! by Robert Essig
If I could, I would give Sick! Sick! Sick! more than 5 stars. Each of the 7 stories in this collection made me question what I was reading and left me saying “wtf” and “wth”. Once you think one story has pushed you to the limit, the next ones only took it much further. After finishing Essig's extreme collection, the stories will likely leave you with unsettling feelings long after you read the last page.
If you like bizarre, disgusting and vile short stories, this is the one for you. Super twisted, super disgusting, super nasty!! I enjoyed the hell out of this one.
This collection of short stories has to be my favorite that i’ve ever read. From a mass of human genitalia, to a wife that somehow keeps getting bigger everytime you walk into your bedroom, this collection had me gagging and laughing. Robert has a phenomenal way to describe gore in a way that is gut wrenching and intriguing at the same time. definitely going to check out more of his work!
Sick! Sick! Sick! is a bizarre (in all the right ways) collection of extreme horror stories that will have you questioning everything you know about humanity! This was a short read, but Robert has a style that you just can't look away from no matter how gross or horrifying the content.
Every story I read, I've realized that humans generally shouldn't be left to their own devices; they tend to get into some horribly questionable situations otherwise. I mean, really, what do you do when you're suddenly faced with a giant undulating blob thing covered in genitals and leaking various fluids? If you're Kyle, you dive right in!
Let's not forget about Andre, the man who became a nurse for every reason that he shouldn't have. The man's got some real nasty interests, and now he knows all the ways to maximize the process. So what do you do when you find an urban legend in the flesh? Hubba hubba, *insert suggestive eyebrow waggle*
These are just a couple examples of the very concerning reasons Robert Essig has given me that we as a species are best kept occupied! Other important lessons from this collection include anything can be a hole if you're creative enough, do your research before attending sketchy sounding parties, and never let someone tie you down and put a pacifier in your mouth.
120 Days - a strange S&M club story that a man finds inside a vintage store. Vengeance of The Donut Man - an arcade donut takes over a man as he is physically attached to it and fights off the owners of the donut shop, a cop and his canine partner. My 6000 Pound Wife- a wife just keeps getting bigger and bigger. She needs food and loving!! Blood Expectations- a man has some awful thoughts about killing people over the years. Ending with a twist that his friend brings upon him. Blowout- gay men are lured to a party called a blowout. Not exactly what they expect it to be. Pacify Her-a prostitute gets into some serious trouble with a man baby. Wrapped in Plastic - two redneck brothers find out what’s it like to be part of the garbage they are constantly adding to the river.
I think my favorite one was Blood Expectations. They are all far fetched, strange and gory stories but this one seemed to be more of the type of stories I like to read.
I have read 6 others by Robert Essig and really enjoyed This Damned House books 1 and 2. Highly recommend those.
This book contains seven short stories! They are indeed Sick Sick Sick 😂.
The Stories are: 🩸 120 Days 🩸 Vengeance of the Donut Man 🩸 My 6000 Pound Wife 🩸 Blood Expectations 🩸 Blowout 🩸 Pacify Her 🩸 Wrapped in Plastic
This book isn't for the faint hearted, reader discretion is advised! 👀
I'd say if you liked/loved Woom by Duncan Ralston you'd like some of the stories in this book! Some are just as strange and abnormal 😂.
120 Days and Blood Expectations were the strangest things I've ever read but they had me engrossed. Pacify Her was good but I wish there was a bit more!
Overall I really enjoyed the book, I always love short stories.. especially when you've read a lot of books. It's nice to break it up with something new and fresh!
I was a little misled. I thought this was 1 story, when it's actually 7 short stories. Of the 7 stories, I really enjoyed 4 of them. This is just personal preference, I'm not a fan of fantasy, or things that can't actually happen or be real, so the 3 stories that were on the outrageous side kinda lost me. All in all it was decent, and gave me a good feeling for the author's writing style. I'll definitely try another one of his books
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Each was incredibly well written and different to the other.
The two that stick out for me were vengeance of the donut man and wrapped in plastic. Wrapped in plastic especially highlighted to me the horror of humans on the environment. I liked that in the end the boys became exactly what they were.
This is my first dip into the writing of Robert Essig and it won’t be my last.
Book review Sick...Sick...Sick 4🤢🤢🤢🤢 Robert Essig As the title says..this book was sick, gross, disturbing, horrifying, twisted, deranged and left me wondering what the hell. 7 short stories you never knew you needed. This is extreme horror
Wow and just wow! This was a past pace set of short stories that I could not put down. They make you think and cringe at the same time. Written in true Essig fashion, they are gruesome scary funny and at some points just sick! 🤣🤣 I loved it!
Lots of great concepts that didn't fully pull together. I would have liked to read a more fleshed out story, pun intended. I will be seeking out more from Essig in the future.
KInky fetishists? Heck yeah! Cryptid? Check. Ever hear of a Blowout party? Me neither. They have a very exclusive guest list, invite-only. Any BBW fans? You're going to love Maddie! I know there are a lot of gamers who love donuts … one story is a sticky treat especially for you! And meet Clinton and Rand, a couple of good ol' boys who ain't got a lick of sense between 'em. "Next to shooting guns, hunting, and sticking their peckers in places they didn't belong, those boys loved swimming."
