The life of a Guild Sleep Marine is a tough, dirty business, and no one is better suited for it than Gunnery Sergeant Alex Hudson. She and First Squad awake from stasis after a 30-year deployment to find a whole new world awaits them. An alien race known as the Kalman have shared their space travel technology with humans, opening the galaxy for exploration.
As Alex comes to grips with her new reality, First Squad battles a familiar enemy on an alien world and discovers a secret that challenges everything Alex knows. Now Alex and her team must survive long enough to uncover a centuries-old conspiracy that spans three star systems.
Whenever you find aliens in a book, you're going to drop into a rabbit hole full of Roswell-related conspiracies. Not (quite) so in this book, to its credit.
What we have is a well paced look through a non-conventional version of the future, learning more and more about past and present as we go.
The characters are quite well rounded and plausible, and the writing clear of any confusion.
Spoiler alert, all good books series' have a climactic ending - so the author needs to did down and get scribbling!
This book really grabs your attention and holds it till the very last page! I literally walked around the house with headphones on listening to it today, it was that good! I think the thing that drew me to the main character of the book was the depth of how the author portrayed her. The amount of loyalty, love, and background of the main character really gives you that intense camaraderie feeling. I wish book 2 was already out, it was that good!
A great read!!! I love the world building and the interactions of all the varied characters. I hope there is a sequel because it just can’t end here! There is way to much for Gunny to do and buts to kick! If you looking for adventure and a new twist to your syfy… this is the perfect read! Go sleepers!
Where is book 2? You can't leave this cliff hanger...its not fair! Seriously, this is one of the better sci-fi books to co.e out in a long time. Some of the passages detailing future capabilities were skimmed over, but the plot line kept my interest. Looking forward to what happens next for Alex and her crew.
The main character felt like a work in progress, as if she wasn’t completely developed… which considering her years is saying something. It made her interaction with the other characters contradictory at times, and that in turn made it difficult to root for her.
That being said, I am invested, and want to see where this crew goes, and how they handle the last scene. Bring on book 2.
I really liked the concept of the book. I feel like series can only get better as the author gets his footing and refines his book writing skills. I recommend it.
The thing I liked best about this book szs it all took place in order no *meanwhile back at thr ranch*. The characters were very 3 dimensional and you got to know them too.
Reading as many books as I do it is rare to find one filled with unexpected twists and turns while being as exceedingly entertaining as this new book/series is.
Alex and her team face many antagonists while Alex is discovering her new abilities. Alex and the other main characters play well off each other. The storyline races along with lots of action and surprises. Some of the detail is missing, in my opinion, from the characters - other than Alex - as the story jumps from one track to another, but it was a very enjoyable read.
Coalescence was more military than I expected, as well as somewhat grim with a high body count and graphic violence. The story is gripping, but I don't think I'll continue with the series. The main character's ruthlessness was difficult to read about.
I wasn’t sure what to expect but this story exceeded my expectations! I must say I enjoyed the team dynamic and the premise of the story! Well written and entertaining
I enjoyed this take on the mercenary guild future, which seems to be more and more likely to become a reality. Alex, the main character baffled me but in the end I was impressed with how she was written. I’m looking forward to seeing how Alex develops.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat! I could not put it down! The concept of the book was unlike any I had read before, and I am excited to read what comes next in Alex's journey! I was constantly trying to figure out what was going to come next, only to be surprised and more intrigued. From love, action, betrayal, and comedy, this book has it all!
Great sci-fi book. Definitely a good FIRST book. Easy read, a bit predictable at times, but didn’t want to set down even for a moment. I say good first book because I wanted the story to continue.
