Even as the world evolves at breakneck speed around us, shockingly, the fundamental tenets of education and school building design across the globe remain unchanged. The premise of this book is that the design of school curricula and school design that include terms like AI, Neuroarchitecture, Biophilic Design, Salutogenic Design and Choice Architecture. These ideas and more are explored to understand how they will profoundly impact both education and the design of Learning Spaces.
It goes into detail and covers a broad range of school settings. The theme focuses on the benefits of design towards open learning spaces inspired by nature reinforced by research. The disadvantages of open learning spaces doesn’t really come through though e.g. impact of noise and disturbance management if there are behavioral challenges.
A lot of the design principles work for schools in more temperate regions. Not so much reference or examples of application in harsh weather environments e.g. Middle East.
Some great exemplar schools and a few takeaways to us in other settings. Overall didn’t find it revolutionary more reassurance for existing approaches in schools that ensure the academic voice is embedded in school design from the outset.
For context my view is limited from my role and experience in schools in UK, South East Asia and Middle East all offering British curriculum with predominantly British teaching staff.
