Hair Rules!: The Ultimate Hair-Care Guide for Women with Kinky, Curly, or Wavy Hair

Rate this book
Kinky, curly, or wavy hair isn’t “problem” hair—it’s just hair with a different set of rules!

For too long, hairstylists and hair-care companies have ignored the needs of women with kinky, curly, or wavy hair, focusing on it as “problem” hair rather than celebrating its unique texture. But now hair-care and style expert A. Dickey, considered by top magazine beauty editors to be the foremost authority on caring for, cutting, and styling curly hair, has written Hair Rules! to end the frustration faced by women with curly hair every day.
Hair Rules! is chock-full of simple tips for all types of curly hair and covers everything from the best shampoos and conditioners to use, to damage-free hair-drying (dust off that hood dryer!), the use of natural oils, and the safest coloring, styling, and chemical relaxing techniques—as well as guidelines for maintaining healthy, gorgeous hair.
“My mission,” writes Dickey, “is to advise and encourage all women with nonstraight hair to strive to attain their beauty, whatever their ethnicity, and whatever their tastes.”

Great Refresher

After locs and a 2nd TWA, I decided to grow my natural hair out. Now in year 3 I was struggling with continuing the growth journey and feeling frustrated with my hair. I decided I needed some inspiration to motivate me to comtinue. Agyer watching several YouTube videos by the guru Anthony Dickey, I decided to read his book. I feel like I have added several techniques from what I have learned and I am looking forward to seeing the results.

Not terribly impressed. I'm a Curly Girl follower all the way, and I felt like some of the info in this book was kind of outdated (for example, I was really surprised the author was suggesting use of non-water-soluble silicones). I'm all for the moderation he's suggesting with color or relaxers, but I wasn't really impressed with most of the info here.

Good info!

I think how he described the chemicals in shampoo and conditioner. I also liked the perspective and advice from the medical professional.

Hair Rules had a few interesting hair care tips in the chapters that were relevant to me; I found the section on wet setting informative. I was waiting on Mr. Dickey to actually recommend some product brands to use for kinky, curly, wavy hair, but his approach was more trial & error to find what hair care products work best for each individual. Not the most comprehensive hair book for kinky, curly, wavy hair; but it's a start.

Interesting thoughts on how to handle my natural hair as I transition from a perm. It's been 9 months and my hair is healthy and my scalp is much better.
