D. B. Carter lives with his family on the edge of a small town nestled amongst the rolling hills of rural Devon, England.

The son of two nomadic artists, he grew up in a world of creativity, studying painting techniques under his parents' tutelage. In his 20s, he went to university and followed a career in science and later commerce, running his own business for twenty years.

A lifelong bibliophile, he is firmly of the opinion that there is no such thing as too many books, only insufficient shelf space; it was his love of classical literature, of Dickens and Brontë, that led to the creation of his first novel, "The Cherries."

His philosophy is, "If we look for the good, we will find it."

When an author amazes us? when he manages to present us a story different from what we were used to. That is, this is the classic book that I like in the fantasy genre, that is, fantasy with mystery, suspense and even horror... I love it.... The author has woven a world that takes inspiration from the real world, but filling it with the fantastic element .
I loved the characters and how they interconnected and interacted. Some were beautiful, but others were truly scary but I always wanted more. But everything is orchestrated to drag the reader towards an end that keeps you in suspense but with the urge to read the next book. I highly recommend it because you will love how Db Carter has expanded his storytelling boundaries.

I have always enjoyed fantasy and urban or dark fantasy quickly became a favourite sub-genre of mine. The Legacy of the Jaded Heart is a pacy and addictive fantasy which will keep you captivated throughout. It was nearly impossible to put down and I managed to finish this in just three sittings, curse life for getting in the way! If you are looking for a fun and well written story this is it!

I think my favourite thing about the book, well tied with the plot, was the characters of Ellie and Tom and their relationship. The twins are perfectly presented with a mixture of banter and heart. I have to say I did end up liking Tom a little more than Ellie but I think it was his personality that got me. But I think that is part of Carter’s skill. They make you, the reader, instantly empathise and comfortable with the characters. We feel like we know them and we feel like we are part of the story. To me that is one of my favourite parts of reading, even with horror. Speaking of horror there are slight elements of that in the novel as well. Tied to the characters as well and Carter’s skill is making you wonder and question who you can trust. Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.

There was a good match between character and story I think and while it might not see much character development in leaps and bounds I believe there is enough, I certainly thought that the twins relationship developed and grew while keeping the usual banter you expect. In terms of the story I loved the pace. I liked the mix of fantasy and horror and I think this a brilliant stepping stone into either genre but I personally feel like it is a little darker than just fantasy. No complaints from me. At the base line it’s a good vs evil storyline but it’s done so well and uniquely I would challenge anyone to find something written as well. I will definitely be keeping an eye on Carter’s foray into young adult fantasy and think I have a new favourite author.

This was a most beautifully written story with adorable characters, a great plot and with just a pinch of thriller added!

I was initially drawn to this book because of the stunning fron cover! One of my favourite colours, so deep and the attention to detail just really makes it stand out!
I can imagine this would make the most amazing special edition with gold foiling and sprayed edge! (🤔 Just dreaming.....)

Anyway, down to the book itself....

I was immediately captivated by our main characters.
Totally relatable with their usual teenage problems and worries - just reminded me of my own kids at the moment!
But what really made them special was their amazing bond with each other.
I know twins are supposed to be closer than other siblings, but this was just written into the story so well that they jump right off the page and into your heart.
They had great banter and loyalty throughout and I loved the way they developed throughout the book.

With an element of the sinister in here, this just brought the storyline up a notch for me.
I love my thrillers and the addition of the sect and the stalker really just had me slightly on edge and not knowing who was telling the real story and who to trust.

The writing style was absolutely amazing!
The descriptive passages really immersed me in the world and pulled me into the story - but I also enjoyed the creepy atmosphere that was created.
There were twists and turns which really took me by surprise and had me racing through the chapters to find out what was going to happen ....and then that ending!

I'm assuming that there will be more books to follow in this same world and I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2 to see what follows...

This story follows twins Tom and Ellie, who having just turned 18 learn that their paternal grandmother has left them some money in her will which will only be accessible if they agree to meet their father. After a disturbing encounter each and against their mother’s wishes they go to meet their father in a secluded community. They are introduced to the communities beliefs which seem very far fetched to them, at least at least to start with. Ellie is a lot more sceptical than her brother and tries to find a logical reason for everything.

I’m blown away by how unique this story is. It had twists and turns. I didn’t see a lot of what happened coming and that cliffhanger. I actually gasped when I thought a certain character may have died.
I am in need of book 2 now as I need to know the fate of all who remain.

I was provided a copy of the ebook for free but my review is honest and all my own.

Fall into fantay.

In a departure from what we are used to D. B. Carter has brought us a new book full of fantasy and a little bit of horror. The author has built a world that draws on the world around us but they have twisted it to make it give it a large fantasy factor.
I loved the interaction between the characters. Some of it was nice but some is the stuff of nightmares. But all of it moves the story along to an ending the leaves you hanging with the knowledge that another book is coming.
This book showed me just how much an author could stretch their boundaries. I would highly recommend it.

I received an arc of this book. I rated this book 3.5⭐️
The plot was somewhat of a mixture between fantasy and horror. The world building was quite different from anything that I have ever read. The characters were portrayed in a way that the reader is unsure of which characters to trust throughout the story, thus keeping the plot interesting as you feel the need to figure out what’s going to happen next. I feel as though the characters could have used a bit more depth as I didn’t feel an emotional attachment to any certain character. I feel like readers who enjoy the horror genre will probably immensely enjoy the story line. I went into the read expecting more of a fantasy story and was not expecting it to be quite as dark as it was. That being said it was still an interesting read, just a little darker than I’m used to reading! The book ended in a way that there is sure to be a sequel on the way!

WHAT A BOOK! This was right up my street and I loved every single bit of it! Being a twin myself I was instantly intrigued and invested in this story. So many positives to this story, the character development was great and I felt like I really knew them and was rooting for them. Bear is some guy! I loved how different the story was and definitely delved towards the horror genre with some brutality and gore thrown in there. I was hooked on this book from the prologue and I was reading it at every possible opportunity… I did think about phoning in sick to work so that I could finish it… but then I thought I better not! 😆

The ending was an awesome cliff hanger and it has left me longing for more! PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS GOING TO BE MORE!?!?

If you like twisted, demonic, fantasy stories then this is one for you! I would highly recommend that you read this book!

LOVED IT!

Urban fantasy has fast tracked itself as a sub genre fave of mine and this book just has all the goods. The plot twists hit you like a surprise party you didn't see coming. The dynamic between the twins and their dad adds an emotional layer, turning a seemingly simple family reunion into a supernatural adventure.

The rural setting creates a vivid backdrop for this deadly game of cat and mouse with a demonic twist. As the twins grapple with the unknown, the reader is kept on the edge, wondering who's the hunter and who's the prey. The author weaves a tale that keeps you guessing till the last page. If you're into suspenseful family reunions, ancient sects, and mythical creatures, this book is a thrilling pick!

I flew through this book in a couple of days and it is a great addition to the YA Fantasy genre.

From the stories ending I’m hoping this will be a series and if so I can’t wait until the next instalment.

As they turn 18, Ellie and Tom discover a grandmother they never knew has passed away leaving an inheritance for them on the condition they visit their father who they also never knew.

On meeting Tracker and his friends, the twins world unravels as they discover the legend of the jaded hart and reluctantly become involved.

The story didn’t end as I though it would and I need to read more now to see what’s next for Ellie and Tom.

The legacy of the Jaded Hart by author D.B. Carter is a fast-paced YA Urban Fantasy adventure novel following the story of twins, Tom & Ellie. The adventure begins when Tom & Ellie discover, on their 18th birthday, about a sizable inheritance left to them by their paternal grandmother they never knew existed. The only stipulation laid to collect the inheritance was for them to meet their father whom they’ve never known or met. As Tom & Ellie journey to the innards of the English Countryside, they begin to learn more about why their mother kept the truth about their father from them. It makes more sense when the twins realize their father is a member of a secret society that’s dedicated to hunting down the Hart—a demonic stag, that’s been haunting the villages for centuries! Tom & Ellie reluctantly get involved with the hunt when it becomes clear that there’s something the Hart wants from them and it won’t stop until both Tom & Ellie are in its clutches. Along the way, Tom & Ellie, meet some very interesting characters like Dart, Bear, and Pastor. This is book 1 of a series and that’s clear with the very unexpected cliffhanger ending! My favorite among the bunch was Dart. Loved her character and representation (WOC and neurodivergent).
The book includes some popular and exciting tropes:
Secret Society
Found Family
Family Secrets
Mythical Creatures
Demonic Possession
Legends and Lores
Twin Main Characters
Overall, it was an exciting and fast paced read that left me wanting more. I’m definitely picking up book 2 of this series!

This was a good YA fantasy book. It started off fairly quickly, and they eased you into the world which was nice, because a lot of fantasy books can be slow with all of the world building. I loved that the two main characters were twins, a brother and sister on an adventure. The writing was done well and the book was a fairly quick read because I was so interested!

Ellie and Tom just turned 18, and ushered in their big birthdays with being attacked. By someone or something that doesn’t make sense, and the police don’t believe them. When a strange man shows up on their doorstep, their mom tries to get rid of him. But he might have the answers that they so desperately want. He gives them letters that are from the lawyer for their paternal line, the one they didn’t know existed. To find answers, they need to go see their dad. And the “cult” their mom says he is brainwashed and a part of.

Thank you to Love Book Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

Legacy of the Jaded Hart | DB Carter | ⭐⭐⭐⭐.85

Fantastical, bordering on mythical; Legacy of the Jaded Hart (LTJH) is a compulsively readable, enchanting, immersive page-turner.

This is a dark, grown-up Famous Five meets Lord of the Rings meets Indiana Jones.

📖📖📖📖📖
Twins Tom and Ellie have grown up with their single-mother Faye in a perfectly regular English town. On their eighteenth birthday they receive a legal letter of a substantial inheritance, on the condition that they meet their father.

A father, whose presence they were not aware of the past 18 years. A father who is part of a self-sustaining commune, cut off from the rest of the world.
A paternal family who are part of the Order of the Jaded Hart, who have existed for centuries, to hunt a mythical stag who brings destruction and devastation in its wake!

Where do the twins fit in, in this Order?

Why are they being followed and chased by a blue ogre like creature in broad daylight?

Is their Father really a brain-washed member of a cult which preys on innocent creatures, as their Mum suggests?
📖📖📖📖📖

Replete with magical creatures, monsters, ogres, Goddesses who emerge from stones, valiant warriors and set in a mystical forest with deep green lakes and cavernous pathways, ruins of the plague and foliage which come alive; this fantastical world is sure to capture your imagination. The undying bond between the twins and their fun banter keeps the humor alive throughout.
You can breeze through LTJH in hours yet it is so very impactful and powerful. This can ideally be called YA but if you have ever enjoyed Harry Potter, no matter your age, this should be right up your alley.

I am not someone who enjoys reading the brand of fantasy with mythical beasts dating each other.
And this undoubtedly, is the best Fantasy I have come across that doesn't involve unnecessary romantic subplots to lure readers.

This is pure, unadulterated fun with words that run deep and characters that enthrall and endear.

Thank you @enchantedinkbooktours and @dbcarterauthor for my gifted e-copy.

📚Book Review 📚

A fast-paced YA urban fantasy read.

When Ellie and Tom turn 18 odd and heart pounding things start happening to them and when they are both attacked by the same blue-grey skinned guy it becomes evident that it's hit a coincidence. So when a PI shows up and habs them a letter informing them they will inherent thousands of dollars there are suspicious. And rightly so, because to get their money they have to meet their absent father. So they do what any 18 year old would do, they quit their jobs and agree to meet their dad. Only he's in a cult, lives off the grid, and has made it his life's mission to kill the Jaded Hart. So of course he is the only one that can answer their questions about their strange attacker and why the strange leaves have Supernatural attributes and are trying to kill them. Visting their dad burdens them with more than they bargained for and learn more than they want to about themselves and their family history.

I enjoyed the hours fast the plot was and the banter between Ellie and Tom. It made for a fast read. The setting was interesting because even though Lewis (their dad) swears it's not a cult, it's totally a cult. That was an interesting lens to look through and that's what kept me reading. Ellie and Tom were easy to love and fun to know bit their actions didn't always have a reason or explanations. They would do something nit completely out of character but it would be just a fracter out of sink with the character I knew up until that point. They would fit into a certain character mold perfectly for 100 pages or so and then they would do something to completely distort their character to fit into a different mold. Which cohort be called character development if this story was a coming of age of where the characters were in the front of the story. But this is a plot that is plot heavy, it's what's driving the story, so there isn't the kind of deep character development that was happening to explain those shifts.

I had the privilege of reading this book before release without the promise of writing a review.

Well-acclaimed sweet romance novelist D.B. Carter breaks into the YA genre with “The Legacy of the Jaded Hart”. This book is rich with fantasy, magic, family, loyalty, deceit, and mystery, and will no doubt become a classic.

Siblings Tom and Ellie learn their father wasn’t merely a one-night stand but actually wants to be a part of their lives. The catch is he’s an eccentric, living off-grid in the deep forest, so Tom and Ellie must go to him.

Once there, the siblings discover the Order, try to understand the legacy of “The Hunt” for the Jaded Hart, and face Miragol, a pond creature, who may or may not be trying to kill them.

“The Legacy of the Jaded Hart” features a well-rounded cast of characters, including a skeptical “preacher”, a “seeing” medicine woman, and loyal fighters who help Tom and Ellie piece together their history. The longer they remain in the forest, the more open they become to certain powers that world has to offer.

Carter does a marvelous job presenting themes of family, coming of age, religion, acceptance, fantasy, and mystery in an organic way that keeps the reader engaged and itching to turn every page.

Readers who finish this book will immediately want to read the next one.

Highly recommended for any age group! Read this future classic today!

This is a really interesting story with great main and side characters. There are moments of genuine horror and plenty of surprises. I had the privilege of reading an ARC copy of this book without promise of writing a review.

DB Carter has an enviable ability to immediately place the reader comfortably in a story surrounded by characters who are both relatable and familiar. Just don't get too cozy. The Legacy of the Jaded Hart begins innocently enough with two twins celebrating their eighteenth birthday. Soon enough strange events encroach on Tom and Ellie's normal life, and they learn a family secret comes with their newfound adulthood. To receive an inheritance, Tom and Ellie must meet a father they never knew existed. Without giving away any spoilers, from here DB Carter builds a world planted in both reality and fantasy. Each new character serves a purpose and adds to the narrative of the story. With crisp and clever prose, Carter leaves the reader guessing who can be trusted and who can't. I found the storyline riveting and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the sequel.

The Legacy of the Jaded Hart by D.B. Carter is a wonderful YA fantasy novel that draws in the reader with its descriptive language and intricate world building. The vivid characters entertain and add to the quick pace of the storytelling.

18-year-old twins Tom and Ellie are invited to the English countryside to meet their father who they barely know. The twins are entangled in mystery even before they leave their home to embark on a journey that will forever change how they view the world. Carter leads his readers on an exciting journey exploring this fantastical and somewhat sinister world with Tom and Ellie. The cast of characters they meet along the way (Tracker, Dart, Astra, Bear, and Bee to name a few) enhances the nuances of the relationship between the twins themselves and between them and their newly-met father.

Ending on a cliffhanger, this novel begs the reader to (im)patiently wait for the next installment of this story of family, friends, and adventure. I received a complimentary copy, and this review is honest and voluntary.

I had the privilege of reading this book before release without the promise of writing a review.

D.B. Carter's first foray into the realm of fantasy is a fun, twisty read filled with likeable characters (and dogs...what's more likeable than a dog?). He has created a truly eerie setting replete with otherworldly beasts, demonic forces, and creepy crawlies from the darkest crevices of what can only be a pleasantly disturbed imagination. And, yes, the aforementioned "likeable characters" find themselves battling these foes in a dark and dense forest.

Carter's tale reads like a legend of centuries past. It truly is a tale that makes the reader want to curl up on the couch with a hot drink and settle in for an enjoyable read. Oh, but they'll also want to turn the lights on.

I loved this story of good vs. evil and cannot wait for the next edition. I will, however, never look at a stray leaf the same way.

I fell for this book the moment I saw the absolutely stunning cover. I knew I had to read it, and then I saw the blurb and this book had completely won me over. I went in hoping beyond hope that the book lived up to the stunning promises it had made and, wow, it definitely did! This is such a wonderful book. It is beautifully written, and flows so nicely that you just feel yourself falling into the story, as though you are actually there, and part of the hunt.
I loved the characters and the level of depth that was put into their creation and the personalities of each. Their development meant the story flowed well and the interactions were able to really bring the book to life.
Overall I really enjoyed the book and the story that the author shared. It was beautifully told and great to enjoy.

I usually don't read the YA genre anymore, but this one had an excellent hook that drew me in. I loved the mix of fantasy and horror elements. The story was nicely paced and kept me looking forward to the next chapter. I loved the rich descriptions of the setting and it felt you were right there with the main protagonists. There were times where I would've loved additional insight into the characters' internal motivations. Still, it was an exciting adventure. What an unexpected twist at the end! I can't wait to read more.

I really enjoyed reading this modern day fantasy story that while it has interesting fantastical elements also has a lot of family drama and hidden secrets. I devoured this books over a few days and enjoyed delving into the world of the Jaded Hart and all of the intrigue lying within.

The pacing of the story is great. The only time the story slows is to lull you into a false sense of security, which I quite enjoyed. If you like stories set in modern time with fantasy elements, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up!
