Some Sort of Story

Rate this book
For Ellie Siegfried, her diary is her closet friend and most trusted confidant, viewed more as a little sister than a notebook.

For Kai Lang, journaling is only something he does because his therapist advised him to, in order to cope with the anxiety that threatens to overcome him.

Through an unexpected and awkward meeting in the library, the two’s stories become intertwined. These stories are told through their journal entries, which record the same events, through two very different lenses.

But the more they get to know one another, Ellie and Kai discover that they bring things out in each other that they never knew existed. When Ellie befriends Kai’s family, her own family struggles come bubbling up to the surface—struggles she’d tried to bury and forget.

And although Kai swore to never fall in love, or even make a close friend, perhaps the sanctuary he’s needed all along isn’t found in a journal, but in the strange and optimistic girl who stole his book in the library.

Emily Morning is a young indie-author and storyteller, who began writing at the age of ten. When she was nine years old, her family moved to South Africa as missionaries. It was there she fell in love with storytelling, and she has been writing ever since. While still in high-school, she published her first series, The Silverblood Trilogy. Reading has made a huge impact on her life, and it is her aim to inspire and encourage others with her stories in the same way.
When her hands are not busy penning a new tale, they’re probably busy sketching. And when she’s not writing or reading at her desk, you can most likely find Emily on the back of a horse.

I was honored to have an ARC and can not recommend this book enough for everyone on Oct 6th!

It is such a sweet story from the alternating viewpoints of each main character’s diary. I initially felt like Ellie and Kai were a bit immature for their college senior age, but the character development and their backstories proved they are exactly who they are written to be! I think a lot of young adult novels focus on the rebellion, partying, or drama of being in college, so this was refreshing to read about a kind and caring friend group and budding relationship.

I lastly appreciate the positive conversations around therapy and dealing with anxiety. We all need to be reminded that having a counselor or trusted friend to talk to is so important!

I just adore Ellie and Kai!

The main protagonists are the epitome of a black cat/golden retriever couple! And although they certainly had a rough start, the way their relationship blooms is so sweet! They both go through so much, so I loved seeing them comfort and complete each other in their own unique ways! The diary entry format is also a fun way to get into the various povs of the cast.

If you're looking for sugary sweet, slice-of-life, and a whole lot of heart, this is the read for you!
