The only chapter I didn't like was the one about Cartos and that patient of his (Apollon). Idk, this quote of what Cartos said to Apollon, "If you don't want it, what's wrong with not living?" just rubbed me the wrong way. Idk, maybe I just don't like Cartos. He's too apathetic, and cares little about his patients and other people in general. I will say, it was shocking that he had a brother, that brother died, and he was given his brother's eye. I did agree with his feelings on that...he didn't really have a choice in the matter.

I like how Apollon chose to continue living, though. Mira was able to make a new friend in Alde, so there's that. The art remains beautiful, and I'm glad to see Mira coming out of her shell more and more.

This volume felt like an ode to the past and the future to come. There is a lesson hidden in each chapter, utilizing different characters and stories each time.

The volume starts by continuing from the previous volume’s story with the introduction of a new character. Alde suffers from shadow sickness and at first behaves quite rudely with Mira. Although this is realistic, I couldn’t like Alde’s character because her feelings changed when Mira’s own affliction started showing. Nonetheless it was cute to see both girls bond and become friends with each other.

This volume also touches on Master Rei. A bit into his life and his past with a glimpse of the inevitable future. I hope that Master Rei is able to meet his own Master in this series because I feel like it’ll be a sweet and warm reunion. There are also many other stories captured in this volume such as, Mira’s night adventure with Stella and Mira cooking alongside her friends.

However, Requiem for a Star was my favorite. It made me cry and I had to take a break from reading multiple times just so I could clear the tears. It was well written from start to finish; losing something that is as dear as one’s life but looking forward to the new tomorrow. I also loved the dynamics between Apollon and Cartos. I hope the series revisits them soon.

As a result, the stories in this volume are independent but they do build on prior knowledge from previous chapters and volumes. I feel like the series is expanding its stories, characters and messages. Although this is great, it changes from the earlier volumes that were focused solely on Mira and Master Rei’s relationship, growth and daily lives.

Unlike previous volumes the artwork is focusing on iconography. Emotions and feelings are at the forefront in this volume. It helps to better visualize and understand each character’s words and stories as well as connect to them. There are still backgrounds, some beautiful full page overlays as well, but it’s lacking compared to the previous volume. I felt like the series may have lost a bit of its magical touch as compared to volume one.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this addition to the series and I think I’m content with knowing Mira’s affliction is as magical as the sickness itself. I hope that with the help of her friends and family she’ll be able to grow more confident as we cheer her on from the side.

This volume is nearly an entire collection of vignettes. They are good and show off the cast and have them play off of each other and highlight aspects of each other very well. Overall though I feel this series has lost its direction a bit. It was always a tad episodic but this volume is extremely one-off with no real connective tissue aside from the final two chapters being a part one and part two. I enjoy being able to see these snippets of this world and its characters come into contact more naturally but it feels like there is no real story or point aside from character exploration for an entire volume. That's fine but the final volume is next and I'm concerned it'll be a let down.

Mira befriends a girl who can’t go out in sunlight and thinks no one will be friends with her, until she realizes she isn’t the only one with an unusual condition. Rei goes shopping and visits an elderly patient. Then Stella takes Mira on a midnight hike to see something wondrous. Then Alde, Mira, and Mr. Cappy make star soup together (and Alde figures out Mr. Cappy’s secret). Then we go somewhere else and follow around I think the dubious colleague of Rei’s treating a singer who will die if his throat isn’t operated on but doesn’t know how he can go on without singing.

I loved the night hike with Stella, and the stories with Alde were fun to see Mira helping someone else. I didn’t get why they included the last 2 chapters which didn’t relate to Mira or Rei at all. The art was astounding yet again, but yet again a character is telling someone to go ahead and die if they want. I think the author needs to have a chat with someone who works on a suicide hotline. At least this time they backtrack pretty quick and a child isn’t involved.

Notes on content:
Language: Just one or two minor swears.
Sexual content: None
Violence: A discussion about having a surgery or not and basically choosing whether to live or die. Alde’s skin burns in sunshine.
Ethnic diversity: Fantasy world characters appear to be fair skinned.
LGBTQ+ content: None specified
Other: A rather flippant doctor is only interested in using the patient for magical knowledge, not their well-being until the singing is heard and it melts the callous heart a bit. Alde is insecure because other friends abandon her when they find out she can’t go outside, she pre-judges Mira before learning about her condition. The callous doctor character says there is no divine, just scientific/magic cause and effect.

Honestly this was just fine! I didn't feel like it was bad or anything but it's just alright, although more chaotic and random than the last volumes. As in I feel like we follow story lines that sort of diverge from the main plot/don't contribute to the main plot. Idk, it just felt fairly messy. I also don't like that we got two whole chapters about Cartos and his backstory. He's not a likable character and those chapters showed no growth, just him continuing to be apathetic and terrible to a poor patient about to lose his vocal chords.

So I just feel like it was unnecessary to include since he's like the biggest antagonist in this series and it doesn't do anything with that. Just proves to us that he's still a prick. Also what is up with this series and having these magic doctor guys telling people to just die??? First there was suicide ideation and then in this volume Cartos was telling a patient "if you don't want it, what's wrong with not living?" And I was like God damn it, this shit again?? But yeah otherwise the art style is nice as always and there was some nice world building and some wholesome scenes. But overall, nothing too special tbh

In this volume, we get to learn more about Rei. It turns out that he suffered from similar issues to Mira as a child - people did not understand his magic, so they shunned him. And he also had a compassionate Master help him through it until he grew up and was ready to venture out on his own. It helps readers to understand why he takes on treating young children with magical afflictions while having them stay in his home during treatment. I enjoyed Mira and Stella's impromptu trip to the moon to explore and collect moonstones. I have flipped back through all of the volumes in this serious just to enjoy the gorgeous, dreamy artwork - I am so glad that I decided to purchase these volumes so I can enjoy them whenever I want to be inspired.

this volume had some real gems - miss alde's prickly entrance followed by her fast friendship with mira, miss stella and mira's moonlit night and mira collecting a moonsong stone for cappy (plus his reaction - ADORABLE), spicy star soup with alde....it was all so wonderful! and then the last chapter came along with cartos, which I really did not love. mostly because of him thinking, if his patient is going to die, at least can he hurry and get along with it....like what!!! what a way to ruin the end of the volume lol, def knocked off a star for me. otherwise, the main adventures with mira continue to be a joy to read!

The Requiem For a Star was beautiful so I wanna post it here so I don't forget it.
Oh, the stars in the sky,
How you twinkle up so high.
When morning comes,
Why must you lose your light?
Night, oh, dark night,
Please guide our stars
To a peaceful respite.
This is our plea,
Our song of prayer.
That someday of mornings,
We will not despair.
And love for them,
We will declare.

This entire series is so aggressively wholesome <3 It gives all the vibes of being 7 years old and staying inside on a rainy day, but also deals with real topics pretty well (anxiety, loneliness, etc). Very hopeful that this gets turned into an anime.

Doctor Rei's other patient, Miss Alde, finally arrives, but she isn’t like Mira suspected. Alde wants nothing to do with Mira and believes that no one can truly understand her affliction. Alde suffers from shadow sickness, which makes her unable to be outside in the sunshine, nor have anything touch her that has had the sun shine on it. Mira enlists the help of Mr. Capri to try to break down the walls Alde has built around herself. After Alde and Mira’s encounter, Miss Stella takes Mira on an adventure to a beautiful night forest full of wonderful starry rivers, magical creatures, and illuminated plantlife.

Mitsubishi’s imagination and creativity still continues to astound me. I love all of the beautiful new creations and environments having to do with moonlight, stars, and light in general. The imagery is woven throughout the story in blatant and subtle ways, and the way light is conveyed through black and white illustrations is always amazing. This series is so wholesome and charming that it always makes me feel better reading it, and it makes me want to go on an adventure to the world Mitsubishi is creating.
