"Revenge is never justified, and you'll always be held accountable...."
When twelve-year-old Georgina Trabeck found her pregnant mother lying on the floor, unconscious, she did something she had never done before-she called 911. Step-Dad had warned her never to call the police or tell anyone about what happened at home. But this was the final straw. Her fear turned to anger, and, to her surprise, her ability to see people's auras was suddenly heightened.
Since the age of six, GiGi's gift of seeing colors had warned her whether to hide in her bedroom and protect her three-year-old sister Chrissy or avoid the boys who bully her at school for being Filipino.
More troubling now is a black cloud aura she has seen wrapped around Step-Dad's neck. She can tell it plagues him, and she can mentally manipulate it-an ability that allows her to fight back against him. With the help of her best friend, Danae Jenkins, and as her aura reading skills strengthen, she attracts a Sidhe Fairy Irra, who confronts Gi-Gi with a talisman and the shocking news that they are related. The fairy warns Gi-Gi not to use it for revenge, but Gig-Gi can't rest until she knows the truth about what happened to Denae's parents, even if it means risking their friendship and enraging Step-Dad.
Gifts of the Shavtal is a magical journey about a young girl born with a gift that's only granted to creatures from the Other World. She must learn to use it wisely if she wants to save the people she loves.

A Story That Changed Me: Talisman: Gifts of the Shavtal by Toni Yap

I discovered 'Talisman: Gifts of the Shavtal' at a time when I needed a story that would remind me of the power of resilience, and Toni Yap delivered exactly that. Within moments of meeting twelve-year-old Georgina Trabeck during her desperate emergency call, I was completely invested in her world. The raw terror in her voice as she fears for her mother's life had my heart racing, and I realized I was witnessing something extraordinary: an author who understands how to make readers feel every emotion alongside their characters.

What struck me most profoundly was how authentically Yap portrays Georgina's world. As I read about her struggles with bullying and feeling like an outsider in her predominantly white community, I couldn't help but reflect on my own experiences of not quite fitting in. The author doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of racism and xenophobia that shape Georgina's daily existence, and I felt every sting of rejection and every moment of loneliness as if they were my own. Yap writes these painful scenes with such honesty that they left me both heartbroken and deeply moved.

The magical elements woven throughout the narrative absolutely enchanted me. When Georgina encounters Telly and the mystical Fae, I found myself completely transported into this otherworldly realm. Yap's integration of magical realism feels so natural and purposeful, never forced or gimmicky. These fantastical moments became my favorite parts of the book because they represent something we all crave: an escape from life's harshest realities and a chance to discover hidden strengths within ourselves.

Reading about the talisman and its accompanying responsibilities made me think deeply about power and what it truly means to grow up. Watching Georgina grapple with these newfound abilities while navigating her complex family dynamics had me questioning my own understanding of courage and maturity. Yap's exploration of these themes through a young protagonist's eyes feels both fresh and timeless.

The family drama, particularly involving Georgina's abusive stepfather, created such palpable tension that I often found myself reading with clenched fists. Yet what moved me most was witnessing Georgina's fierce protectiveness toward her mother and younger sister. Her determination to shield those she loves, despite being just a child herself, reminded me of the incredible resilience young people possess when circumstances demand it.

Yap's writing style is beautifully nuanced and emotionally intelligent. She has this remarkable gift for balancing fantasy elements with authentic adolescent experiences in ways that never feel contradictory. Her prose flows effortlessly between moments of wonder and instances of stark reality, creating a reading experience that feels both magical and grounded. The way she captures Georgina's voice, complete with all the confusion and determination of adolescence, demonstrates a deep understanding of young people's inner lives.

What resonated with me most was how this story celebrates resilience without minimizing struggle. Yap doesn't offer easy answers or quick fixes to Georgina's problems. Instead, she presents a young girl learning to navigate an often hostile world while discovering her own strength and identity. This honest approach to storytelling left me feeling both emotionally satisfied and intellectually engaged.

By the time I reached the final pages, I felt like I had been on a transformative journey alongside Georgina. Yap has created something truly special here: a story that acknowledges the very real pain of growing up different while celebrating the magic that can emerge from embracing who we truly are. This book will undoubtedly stay with me for years to come, and I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone seeking a story that combines heart, hope, and genuine human connection.

I started out not loving, yet enjoying this ARC which I’m reading in exchange for a review. I will finish it and post a final review.

I had to pause after reading the following, as this needs to be corrected before the final copy goes to the publisher.

For context, we have only been introduced to one person with the surname Jenkins, in this book so far, unless her niece Danae also has the same surname. She is always referred to as Mrs. Jenkins. Danae is always referred to as Danae, not Laura or Laurie.

"Grandma snaps her fingers.

'That's right, Laura Jenkins or Laurie Jenkins works too. The phone number is on the list there at the fridge door. Gi-Gi, I'll be waiting for you at my house. This will give me time to take a shower and freshen up before we head out.’

Mrs. Jenkins gets up from her chair. She starts clearing the table with the fishes left by my mother, but Grandma shoos her away.”

I’m a bit wary of finishing the book, as such an oversight gives the impression that the author doesn’t care much about it. However, I am interested in the storyline, and am already 43% in, so I will finish it, and edit this review.

To add to this oversight, there is further confusion as it’s been established that said Mrs. Jenkins who is in the kitchen for this scene, will drive Gi-Gi to where she needs to go, not Grandma, though the impression is given that Grandma is the one I’ve quoted.

The book does suffer from too much telling and not enough showing.

Before the above excerpt, this was a 4 star read, and now it’s feeling like a 3 or possibly a 2. I’ll decide after I’ve finished it, and post my final review.

Final review add-on after reading the entire novel:

Mrs. Jenkins was the one who drove our protagonist, Gina (Gi-Gi), to her destination, and she later tells someone that her name is Laura.

What a strange thing that was to have to add to a review. We should at least expect to be clear about what we’re reading, even if it isn’t particularly engaging.

The second part of this book takes a sudden turn into a boring, predictable light horror. It actually comes off as a bit unintentionally funny, yet that doesn’t override how boring it is.

That’s followed by… well it’s just boring now. We don’t need one bland description of people making food and eating, much less multiple such scenes. There’s so much filler here. More filler than story. What story there is though, is one which, if written well, would hold the readers attention.

Even pixies can’t save this book, and I usually love pixies.

I tried to give the second half of the book a chance for character backstories and thus motivations to appear, yet those are non-existent.

It seems to end on a note implying a book two. I won’t be reading that.

So we finish on one star.

This is a poignant and gripping tale that explores the complex lives of its characters, particularly focusing on young Georgina Trabeck. The narrative opens with a heart-stopping emergency call where twelve-year-old Georgina fears for her mother’s life, showcasing the immediate tension and emotional stakes that draw readers in right from the start. Georgina's experience with panic and fear is vividly depicted, as she tries to get help for her unconscious mother, and the urgency of the moment is expertly conveyed through her stuttering speech and tearful pleas.

The story further delves into Georgina’s life, revealing her struggles with bullying and cultural alienation in her predominantly white community. As she navigates her school’s treacherous social landscape, we see the impact of racism and xenophobia on her childhood, adding layers of depth to her character. Georgina's feelings of isolation and her yearning for acceptance resonate strongly, making her journey relatable and poignant.

Author also intertwines elements of magical realism through Georgina’s interactions with mystical beings, specifically Telly and her encounters with the Fae, which add an intriguing dimension to the plot. These elements serve not only as a form of escape for Georgina but also as a means of self-discovery. The introduction of a talisman imbued with responsibilities emphasizes the themes of power and accountability, showcasing Georgina's growth as she learns to navigate her newfound abilities and the associated dilemmas.

Moreover, the backdrop of familial struggles, particularly with her abusive stepfather, creates a compelling narrative tension. Georgina's awareness of her mother's pain and her determination to protect her younger sister amplifies the emotional stakes, providing readers with a sense of urgency and empathy towards her plight.

The book successfully combines elements of fantasy with realistic portrayals of adolescence, familial dynamics, and the quest for identity. Readers witness Georgina not only confront external challenges but also grapple with her internal conflicts, making her character’s arc intricately layered and engaging. This is a thought-provoking read that offers both excitement and emotional depth, making it a worthwhile exploration of resilience and courage in the face of adversity.

In conclusion, author delivers a compelling narrative that beautifully weaves together the complexities of growing up in a tumultuous environment while exploring themes of love, protection, and the quest for a place to belong.
Highly recommended.

In Talisman: Gifts of the Shavtal by Toni Yap, readers are introduced to the captivating world of twelve-year-old Georgina Trabeck, also known as Gina. Possessing the unique ability to read auras, Gina grapples with understanding and managing this newfound power, especially when it reveals unsettling truths about those around her. Most notably, the menacing black aura of her stepfather which mirrors his aggressive and volatile nature. With a narrative that delves deep into issues of domestic abuse, alcoholism, and the tension of a family on the brink, the stakes escalate when Gina's mother, while expecting another child, becomes a frequent target of this violence.

Gina's journey into harnessing her gift is both tumultuous and exhilarating. The introduction of the enigmatic Sidhe Fairy, Irra, and her twin Ravanna adds layers of mystery and suspense. Their motivations remain unclear, especially when a powerful talisman enters the fray, its capabilities unknown but seemingly boundless. Readers will find themselves constantly questioning allegiances and motives, ensuring they remain engaged until the very last page.

Gina, her sister Chrissy, and their beleaguered mother feel so tangible, so real, that one can't help but be emotionally invested in their fates. Talisman : Gifts Of The Shavtal is a paranormal fantasy novel written by the author Toni Yap, published in October 2023. It’s the story of 12-year-old girl named, Georgia Trabeck, better known as Gina. She has the gift of reading auras, and struggles to understand and control her new-found power, particularly when it reveals disturbing truths about the people around her, especially her stepfather’s sinister black aura, which reflects his violent and unpredictable personality. The story delves deep into themes of domestic violence, alcoholism, and family dysfunction, and the stakes escalate as Gina’s mother, who is pregnant with her second child, becomes a regular victim of this violence. Gina’s journey to unlock her gift is both wild and exciting. The introduction of mysterious Sidhe Fairy Irra and her twin, Ravanna, adds another layer of mystery and tension. Their motives remain a mystery, especially when a mighty talisman enters the mix, its powers unknown but seemingly limitless. Readers will be left questioning allegiances and motivations until the last page of the book. One of the best things about this novel is how real the characters are. Gina, her older sister, Chrissy, and her struggling mother all feel so real, so relatable, that you can’t help but feel something for them. Domestic abuse is portrayed with sensitivity, revealing the real fears and struggles of so many people. However sorted as a Young-Adult novel, Talisman : Gifts of the Shavtal rises above age limits. It offers a vivid perusing experience loaded up with tension, sympathy, and superb person improvement. I’m not sure what to make of this book. A lot of emphasis is placed on this talisman but then not much is said about it. Also, the adults who are supposed to know about this talisman just drop her with it, tell her to be careful using it, then get mad when she doesn’t use it right. What? I’m also not sure how a 12-year-old girl gets a hold of a necklace and no one around her notices? Especially in a household that’s abusive and watches her every move? I’m confused by that. There was a lot of filler that didn’t need to be there. A lot of characters that were there, but then weren’t fully explained. I don’t know, I think the wrong things were emphasized. It’s supposed to be a novel about fantasy but is more a novel about small town racism and domestic/child abuse?

“Talisman” by Toni Yap was a good fantasy YA book for younger teens. I liked the cultural stuff with the book and the moral lessons and family issues. There was a lot of down time and verbally explaining way too much that slows down the book. I think it’s a good book for younger readers because of the cultural differences, the length of the book, and the fun fantasy aspects like the talking animals and stuff. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

I loved the multiple layers to this book, and I can't wait to read the next book in this series. The ending threw me off, but I understand how it will lead to the next book. The sub-plot of Gina discovering who hit Danae's parents was also a pleasant surprise. If you love reading about Sidhe fairy adventures but with a twist, the main character is a Filipina who can see auras. She discovers how she fits into the Fae world!

A heartfelt, beautifully layered tale that blends fantasy, emotion, and inner strength. The worldbuilding drew me in, but it was the character depth and emotional resonance that truly stood out. This is the kind of story that honors both courage and compassion: perfect for readers who crave meaning alongside magic.

I loved how this book captured the reality of what it was like being a young Filipino girl in the 1970s, mixed with a fantastical edge. I think it’s a book many young readers especially girls who feel powerless and isolated in their lives, can relate to this story and be influenced by in the best of ways.
