Wow, and I don't mean that in a good way. CHARMED is filled with typos and grammatical errors, but those didn't bother me compared to the book's content.
The author calls CHARMED a memoir that's supposed to be hilarious, motivating, and filled with valuable lessons that readers can apply to their own lives.
I must have read a different book because CHARMED was none of those things. It wasn't a memoir, wasn't funny, and contained nothing motivational in it. The only thing it taught me was not to believe book descriptions on Amazon. The author fills 219 pages with a stream of consciousness that's disorganized, repetitive, and without meaning except to the author. It reads like a report on what he did over the summer.
Bragging and patting yourself on the back doesn't a memoir make unless you're a famous person who fans want to know more about, no matter what it is. I lived in the Detroit area for 20 years during the time of the author's "celebrity status" there, and I'd never heard of him, so fame isn't the book's selling point.
Others might like this book just for the information, but I read memoirs to experience a story arc focusing on the author's successes, failures, struggles, and redeeming qualities. This book had the emotional journey of a piece of driftwood.
I'd hoped this book would give me the incentive to read the author's other works. That'll be a hard pass.
Fantastic, Tom. CHARMED- FROM MOTOWN TO COMBAT AND BACK is the "total" book on attitude, self image and relentlessness. It shows you how you can become what you want to be. The stories and "one liners" hold your interest and entertain you all throughout your book. Pete Washburne Italy
Having previously read a couple of this authors biographies I thought it would be fun to read his memoir. Coming from a family with some great American history, this memoir is a great recount of a life well lived. Inspiring by his ability to overcome obstacles in life even when life’s start wasn’t necessarily easy and growing up with an alcoholic poses additional issues. The author’s light hearted story telling keeps you turning the page…it’s like listening to your grandpa telling you about his glory days and the lessons learned. I really enjoyed this memoir.
I have read just about everything from the author at this point and his memoir is just as wonderful as his other books. I love his storytelling and way of looking at life.
