I really enjoy this author pairing. This story is the sort that is absolute catnip to me, so I was really excited about reading it. It’s been a while since I finished it so the details aren’t exactly fresh in mind, but I loved how original it felt.
Reed was a super sweet and kind character who had been horribly neglected, and I felt so bad for him. He didn’t have an easy time of it once he met the other MC either, considering he was kidnapped for information, lol.
This was how lovers kissed. Eyes closed, bodies resting against each other offering support, skin against skin. Stealing each other’s breaths and trusting they’ll leave you with enough to survive to keep kissing them forever.
I do have the same issue with this book as I have with almost every other shifter book tho, and that’s the fact that they never fucking shift. I am genuinely often confused by why the shifter aspect is even included with how rarely they shift. I read shifter books because I want shifted interactions and cute animal behavior, so I was sad about how little there was of it. It could’ve easily just been an omegaverse story and not much would’ve been different.

This was my first ABO book, and I really enjoyed it! I liked the pack dynamics and I loved the mating ceremony.
There could have been more explanation and world building as I felt as clueless as Reed at points, but overall this was an enjoyable read. I'd definitely love to see more books in this series, especially because I can't find the short story for Damian and Kaiden and they really pinged my curiosity!
I've actually been putting these kind of books off because I had a strong suspicion I'd absolutely love them so much that I wouldn't want to read contemporary again until I've gone down this rabbit hole for a long time 😂 Same thing happened when I started reading PNR!
So, it's not gonna help my plan to get my TBR way down this year, but now I'm making grabby hands for all the ABO books I can find 😁

I got exactly what the blurb promised. And before you ask — no, that’s not a bad thing. At least not for me. This book was truly lovely.

I may or may have spent most of this book crying, so I had to give it five stars. It’s a rule. Stories that deal with abuse are always gut wrenching to me and I thought this was done well. Reed’s parents were terrible and abusive, but not physically abusive. Reed is resilient, but does hit a breaking point, because even though people say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, everyone reaching the end of their rope. Jax was all kinds of a martyr with a growly and tactless demeanor. He was sweet when he wanted to be, but had the communication skills (at least with Reed), of a toddler. They were both slow to trust but found safety in one another’s arms.

We have shifters! add in a sprinkle dash of enemies to lovers and I'm a happy girl.
Jaxon is the alpha of the Redwood pack. The defected pack is currently hiding out in the woods near their homeland since it was taken away with the brutal murder of Jaxon's mother, the previous alpha. Now the son of her murderer Sterling is living the life on their lands, sleeping in his bed, and terrorizing his once beloved packmates. All Jaxon dreams of and wants is to bring his pack back together so that they can finally be home. To do that, Jaxon must defeat Sterling and there is one thing Sterling has that Jaxon does not: an Omega.
When Jaxon finds out Sterling has decided to get himself a second omega, he devises the plan to steal him away. There is no way he can let Sterling become more powerful than he already is. He expects the new omega he kidnaps to be bratty, spoiled, and used to a life of luxury and being waited on. What he gets is Reed and his life has been the exact opposite of all those things.
Poor Reed. Sheltered from the world and hidden away by his horrific parents, his hope is that the new alpha they are sending him to will finally be his ticket to living a normal happy life. Unfortunately he is wrong so very very wrong. Reed may be in a new pack, but he has basically moved from one prison to another, except this one he is physically abused as well. Sterling is nothing like he hoped. He's sadistic and just down right evil. I couldn't wait until that fucker died. I hoped it was as brutal as he'd been to Reed.
When Jaxon takes Reed as his prisoner he spends the start of their time interrogating Reed for useful information on Sterling. Days and days he spends questioning him getting the same response every time: " I don't know." His frustration gets worse as he finally starts to clue in that Reed may be nothing like he thought. When he glimpses the bruises left by Sterling still lingering behind on Reeds body after a week, Jaxon has to admit defeat. Reed wasn't a beloved omega confidant of Sterling, but an easy punching bag. Thankfully things only improve for Reed from there.
Reeds time with Sterling was hard to read. He was so sweet, so naive and hopeful for a better life. I hated how he was abused yet again. Then Jaxon came along and though he never hit him, he wasn't exactly kind in the beginning. When he realized the error of his ways, Jaxon set out to fix it. He made sure Reed knew he was safe and cared for, something he never had felt before. He took the time to answer his questions, astonished at how sheltered his life had been. As the two spent more time together their relationship blossomed into something far more beautiful, even if it all began as a means to an end.
I must mention how much I loved the side relationship between Tegan and Harlan. They provided some much needed relief from the angst, Harlan especially. It couldn't have been easy what they had to go through for their having been mated for so long. In fact the book starts out with a chapter in Harlan's POV. I actually had to check back the blurb to see if I was reading the wrong book because I couldn't recognize that characters name. It was just the one chapter though and it gave us valuable insight into just what Harlan has to do as a spy for the Redwood pack.
If this author decided to write more in this universe, say about a certain shifter names Kaidan, I'd definitely pick it up.

I thoroughly enjoyed this shifter romance with no MPREG. World building is really good, the story is engaging from start to finish, dual POV allows to flesh out both MCs and get to know what they feel and what drives their actions.
I especially liked Reed - innocent, sweet, adorable omega. Jax is tough Alpha with good heart. His behavior in the beginning was questionable but considering his history - justified. I liked how honorable Jax was towards Reed as soon as he realized the truth. What started as an arranged mating quickly became a true love match. I just wish the feelings were confessed sooner and we had more of them as a couple.
Epilogue was perfect.
I definately recommend this lovely story - feelings, hope, adventures, finding yourself and your place in this world - all is there. Can be a good intro into shifters world. No MPREG - huge bonus from my opinion. For sure will read more from these authors.

Shifter romances are something that I find go cheesy quite easily, but this worked well for me. The pacing was good - I never really felt any dull moments. The storyline itself was intriguing. I love a good revenge plot. The MCs are dimensional and likeable, and had good chemistry. There were even great secondary characters which is always nice. Harlan was my favorite. The angst is never overwhelming - which I always appreciate. The steam was minimal, but present and well done. All in all it was just a great read.
Some included themes/tropes that might improve your enjoyment:
- age gap (I don’t think it was specified, but it read that way to me)
- virgin
- enemies-to-lovers
- definite Dominant/growly vibes from our Alpha

I loved this! It was on its way to being a 5 star read for me but it lost a bit of steam at the last 25% or so; so not quite perfect. Still really good and I would recommend to anyone wanting a shifter romance with pack politics, scenting, claim bites, etc without what I'd consider traditional omegaverse elements - slick, knotting, heat/rut, mpreg, etc.
The omega MC, Reed, is a sweet little anxious boi. He had the misfortune of being born to a family of assholes who saw his omega status as a means for them to make money by eventually selling him off - in this world omegas are rare and they strengthen packs so they are sought after. His family basically locks him in a tower until he's marriageable; not allowing him to shift or have friends or freedom. He's extremely sheltered and has no idea how the world works. His neglectful family then sells him off to a horrible, abusive alpha who treats him like a punching bag while also keeping him locked away in the same way his family had. And then he gets kidnapped. So, Reed's life is absolute shit. But he still manages to be kind and polite and eventually, when he gets more freedom, he's pretty sassy and stubborn. I really liked him and felt for him.
The alpha MC, Jax, is his kidnapper. Jax's pack is living in exile and he sees Reed as an opportunity to try to get his pack lands back from the piece of shit alpha that bought Reed. Jax acts like a total brutish asshole toward Reed (assuming that Reed chose to be with said piece of shit alpha and is living the dream being pampered and looked after) and Reed is rightfully terrified of him. Jax thinks Reed is putting on an act and proceeds to interrogate him, thinking he has information, and just adding to his trauma. I absolutely go feral for the microtrope where one MC has a drastically off base perception of the other, treats him like shit, and then realizes he has it all wrong and has to work to try and correct his behavior and earn trust back. That shit is catnip to me. So, of course, Jax eventually realizes that Reed is a victim, apologizes, and welcomes him into their pack. They already feel a strong pull toward each other and Jax starts feeling some kind of way. I am obsessed when the deep need to care for your mate takes over. Hand feeding? Yes, please. Checking to make sure your mate has eaten, slept well, is physically comfortable? Give me. Feeling your inner wolf preen when you've done a good job meeting a need and your mate is happy? Take my money.
The relationship was slow burn which fits with their situation and was done really well. There was actually very little sex in this which surprised me. I usually read much spicier stuff but I didn't mind here - it was still fairly sensual in a way, their first kiss was honestly hot. Despite his early behavior, Jax did end up being a good mate and taking care of Reed. They were a good match for each other and I loved how the pack accepted Reed. Also, side note, but I loved Reed shifting and his little howl.
The third act conflict was where things were slightly lackluster for me. I'm not sure why exactly but it just didn't hit like I thought it would. I was also super frustrated with Jax for his bit of stupidity toward the end. But overall it was still a delightful time and it fed my need for all those "caring for your mate" moments that I'm in the mood for. And shout out to Harlan for being an absolute gem of a side character! This was my second AM Rose book and I'll definitely read more.

Reed waited for the wall of disappointment to crash down on him, but he felt nothing. His favourite place in this hell was being torn away from him, and he couldn’t even feel sad. He wondered if this was what dying felt like, because it sure as hell didn’t feel like living.
“Ready?” Jax whispered, and no, Reed didn’t think he was ready for that burning focus to be solely on him. He didn’t think there was a way for any living being to look into Jaxon Redwood’s eyes, knowing he was about to kiss them, and claim they were ready for it.
But allow me to say this as your Alpha. You’re the best friend and Beta that I could have asked for, and I will be forever indebted to you for your sacrifices.” “Well…” Harlan looked struck silent for the first time in his life until, true to form… “This is awkward. I’ve been craving a shifter book that wasn’t insta love and fluffy. And while this book doesn’t go too deep into the darkness it does have some which was great. I enjoyed this I kinda didn’t want it to end. It was nice to see fated not just jump into it. They had to work for it. Would have liked more of their time together. It seemed most of their relationship was apart, but I loved both of them. The writing was great, the smexy was good also wish we got more than just the first especially since it was his first, and I love the side characters. I would love more like this from this author, they are becoming a must read shifter author

this was kinda cute and fun enough, turned some genre tropes on its head, which is always satisfying. it didn't really go too far into making anything new, but had hot enough scenes and the characters were also interesting.

Returning Home is a werewolf romance about finding love and fighting for home. Reed, a lonely and neglected omega is thrown from the skillet into the fire when his family arranged for him to be mated to the cruel Alpha Sterling. Alpha Jaxon had his territory and pack taken over by Sterling following the death of his parents. Without a proper home or any hope of defeating Sterling in the near future, he's driven to desperation. When Reed enters Sterling's territory, Jaxon and his pack kidnap him in an attempt to gather intel that might help them get their home back.
Alright, I'll admit it, once the kidnapping plan was hatched, I had a bad feeling about the book. I was worried that Jaxon would end up being abusive and cross a line. Surprisingly, he was a pretty decent guy. The entire book handled the kidnapping situation without it getting problematic for the main couple, for which I was glad.
The characters surprised me. Jaxon came off as a stereotypical alpha in the beginning - growly, going on about his pack and his land, breaking things and throwing tantrums - but he turns out to be more. I'm not sure how to feel about Reed's character - he's sweet, patient, and self-sacrificing. While I liked watching the soft omega vs. growly alpha dynamic between him and Jaxon blossom, I found his character to be unrealistic. For someone who suffered as much trauma as he did - being isolated as a child, abused by Sterling - he had very little anger for his lot in life. I know he was drawn as a gentle character, but his characterization was almost flat with his lack of backbone. I would have liked to see some character development there.
I really liked Teagan. She was a strong female character, with both sense and grit. When Jaxon teetered too close to the edge of the border of necessary and cruel, she pulled him back. When he wraps himself up in self-pity and loathing, she brings him back to his senses. Even Raya, Reed's sister, the fierce, protective huntress, was fun to read about. My favorite of all was Harlan, though. Harlan stole my heart with his humor, his sacrifices masked beneath a veneer of sarcasm and wit and his intelligence.
I also didn't expect to like the romance as much as I did. While I thought Jaxon and Reed were attracted to each other before it was appropriate (while Reed was kidnapped, before they had established trust), it was easy to disregard that bit because the rest of their relationship was healthy. I did not expect them to be as cute and tender with each other as they were. I really appreciated all the soft moments of their relationship, and there were lots to keep me happy.
I think the writing could be improved. A lot of the sentences did not have any business being as long as they were (they could easily have been cut in two), making the language sound clunky and awkward. Some of the humor - when not involving Harlan - made me cringe rather than laugh. The same goes for Reed's inner monologues. They came out sounding childish and immature, a stark contrast to the maturity of his decisions and his ability to see the bigger picture. Plus, there was a lot more telling than showing, especially at the beginning of the book, where the world-building took the forefront. It was frustrating to read through paragraphs of information that I could have gleaned myself if it was integrated into the plot.
Despite these drawbacks, I found myself enjoying reading the book. A solid three stars.

“I don’t think it’d be in a book if there weren’t at least an ounce of truth to it,” she said, and he hoped with all he was she was right.
First of all, I can’t believe this is A.M. Rose's debut novel! Their writing style is so good and the story is really solid without plot holes.I know this is a standalone but if the authors decide to expand this series in the future I wouldn't mind at all.
In this universe Omegas are rare and for this reason people pamper them. The result is that most of them ended up being spoiled little brats. So when Jaxon , an Alpha with a reason to despise Omegas, meets Reed it was a formula for disaster.
I love when characters aren’t what they’re supposed to be. Yes, Reed is an Omega but because of his background he is the opposite of everything I said before. After Jaxon realizes that, it’s up to him to mend all the things he said. I really enjoyed how their relationship built up.
Another positive thing for me was Jaxon and Harlan’s friendship. All the times he was pointing out how stubborn Jaxon was being, I was cheering for him. And his sense of humor was on point.
The only negative thing I could say is that some parts of the story felt a little slow paced. And I’d have loved to see more interactions between Reed and Jaxon. But other than that it was a great ABO with a good balance of action and sweet moments.

RETURNING HOME was such a fantastic read! As an Omega, Reed should have been well cared for and loved but instead he was isolated by his parents, prevented from shifting, sold off to an abusive Alpha, and then kidnapped by another pack (albeit a good one). This poor guy could not catch a break for a bit there and it was such an emotional read that had me wishing I could give Reed a hug and tell him everything would be ok.
A.M. Rose did such a great job writing Reed's POV and showing how resilient and strong Reed was even under terrible circumstances. And while things started out rocky with Jaxon, these two eventually found their way. Jaxon has been giving his everything to keep his people safe as they fight to win back their land and pack from Sterling. It's taken its toll on Jaxon but under his more gruff exterior is a warm and compassionate heart and a wolf that just wants to protect his people.
I really loved Jaxon and Reed's journey and how they fell in love. They were so sweet together and it was great to see someone finally put Reed first and care for him. This wasn't an overly spicy read but what was there was sensual and tender, and so perfect for these two. I also adored the side characters, especially Tegan and Harlan, and I would love to explore more in this world but I guess I'll just have to be satisfied with this being a standalone.

❤❤ A great start as I found the guys are both struggling to find happiness.
Alpha Jax wants his pack to be where they should be back in society.
Reed grew up in solidarity alone, never socializing with anyone. Given away by his parents Reed didn't know what he'd be walking into.
This is an emotionally charged reading book Reeds treatment his life is poorly.
Their first meeting was less than nice and trust was not there on either side.
I felt for Reed in this with a few scenes nearly having me in tears. Danger and treats from Spencer puts the pack on the run but only for a short time.
I loved this book the characters are fantastic together. Both POVs are included and a gorgeous ending. This was as first time author for me with this book and wont be the last.
Beta Harlin learns the alpha was bring a new omega to the pack info he needed to pass on. The true alpha of the Redwood pack, Alpha Jax wanted that omega.

A well-written, hurt-comfort shifter romance
'Returning home' follows the story of exiled Alpha Heir -Jaxon and a sheltered and beat down omega wolf- Reed. A struggle for power, shifter territory and a plan to redemption make their paths cross and though their initial meetings don't go according to plan, they strike up a bond thanks to Reed's optimism and Jaxon's TLC.
Reed's character was very well written and my heart went out for him at the beginning. I loved the adorable chemistry the duo shared and their cute banter.
Told in dual POV, I had a few quibbles but overall a great debut attempt and I really liked the story layout. The side characters were lovable-especially Teegan and Harlan. And I would love to read more about Kaiden and Damian. Probably in book #2? (*bats puppy dog eyes*)
Highly recommend if you are looking for a good hurt comfort paranormal romance.

I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect with this book. What I got was a beautifully written story that breaks your heart and then rebuilds it. Reed was the light of this story and help my attention the most.

I absolutely loved the dynamics between Reed and Jax.
They are such a great match for each other. Jax with his feral protective instincts to keep Reed safe and Reed though fragile and sheltered is so fierce in his own way and can definitely hold his own.
Tegan and Harlan were my favorite secondary couple!
I loved the unique world building and the setting of this story. What appealed to me most was that the story was written in a dual POV and we got to actually get into the minds of both our characters. This made the emotions and their feelings all the more real for me.

Jaxon's mother was the Alpha of the Redwood Pack, until she was overthrown, and now a wolf named Sterling is the Alpha. Jaxon and his loyalists live in exile in the woods. Jaxon is trying to defeat Sterling and take his place as the true Redwood Alpha.
Jaxon has a spy within the pack who says there's a new Omega arriving soon. Sterling already has an Omega, Clara. No Alpha has ever tried to mate 2 Omegas before, but Jax wants to kidnap the Omega to keep Sterling from getting a second Omega. But Jax doesn't trust Omegas, because an Omega was involved with betraying their pack originally. Jax thinks the new Omega is in league with Sterling.
The new Omega is Reed. His parents raised him in seclusion, and are now selling him to Alpha Sterling. He's not in league with Sterling. Reed is kind of sad that he's being sent to yet another place where he won't know anyone.
Once Reed arrives at Alpha Sterling's pack house, things go pretty much as he expected. He's secluded in his room and isn't allowed to talk to any other pack members. After about a month, the pack members are wondering why they never see the Omega, so Sterling lets Reed go out in the village, so the pack will think everything is normal. Finally, Jax has the opportunity to kidnap him.
Jax interrogates Reed for information, but Reed just answers "I don't know." Reed also won't eat because he's scared of being poisoned. It's hard for his wolf to ignore Reed's "scared omega act." The combination of interrogation and lack of food causes Reed to become delirious and wander around the campsite, without really being aware of what he's doing.
Then Reed meets a Redwood pack member who's a nice motherly type, and she tells him a little bit about them being exiled and tells him Sterling the a bad guy. Reed's like, "I know," and lifts up his sweater, and his back is covered in bruises. Even though Reed is still a prisoner of Redwood, he says nobody has tried to hurt him, unlike Sterling. And Jax is standing right behind him, of course, and sees all the bruises.
Jax finally believes Reed doesn't really know anything. They don't return him to Sterling, but they treat him like a normal person after that. Jax and Reed get to know each other better. Jax tells Reed he'd have to defeat Sterling in a one-on-one fight, but Sterling is stronger than him, which is why he can't defeat Sterling. That doesn't make sense to Reed, because Jax is the biggest man he's ever seen, and he should be stronger than Sterling. Reed doesn't realize having an Omega mate is what makes Sterling stronger. (Since Reed was very sheltered and isolated, he doesn't know much about anything.) The pack starts pressuring Jax to take Reed as a mate, but because Jax kidnapped Reed, he doesn't want to pressure him to mate his kidnapper. Until Reed overhears someone telling Jax they could win with Reed's help, and he asks how he can help.
So Jax tells him that they would have to mate. Reed actually agrees. But Sterling would also have to accept Jax's challenge, it has to be mutually agreed. So Jax and Reed will mate, then Reed will be "rescued" after his kidnapping, and returned to Sterling. It's all part of a plan to get Sterling to agree to the challenge when Jax shows up.
Can Jax defeat Sterling? And if he does, he and Reed would still be mated, so what will happen to their relationship?
Jaxon has a spy within the pack who says there's a new Omega arriving soon. Sterling already has an Omega, Clara. No Alpha has ever tried to mate 2 Omegas before, but Jax wants to kidnap the Omega to keep Sterling from getting a second Omega. But Jax doesn't trust Omegas, because an Omega was involved with betraying their pack originally. Jax thinks the new Omega is in league with Sterling.

I found this story very compelling and one of the MCs drew me right in, tugging on the heartstrings all the way. The other one took a little bit to not come off like a jerk but once he did he was easy to root for as well.
The premise is different and it ignores some pretty well established shifter mythology but was a story that held my attention throughout. It’s a little hard to buy into the way Reed was raised and that the Alpha would allow it given everything we are supposed to believe about shifters and Alphas but since it’s necessary for the story to play out I adjusted.
Reed is a rare Omega who is sent to a cruel Alpha who wants to use him to increase his power. Reed has led an unbelievably sheltered life and has no knowledge of the world or what it means to be an Omega other than what he’s read in romance books. Newsflash for Reed...not reality! Jaxson is the Alpha of a pack of exiles who wants his rightful home and place back. The Alpha currently holding it, and his father, killed Jaxson’s parents and chased Jaxson and his sister away. Of course worlds collide when that Alpha turns out to be the one Reed was sent to.
Once we get to the point where Reed and Jaxson intersect the story picks up. Jaxson has a lot of preconceived notions about Omegas based on his previous experience and Reed is so completely out of his element he can’t understand why everyone hates him. The growth of the relationship and the character development is well done and a pleasure to read. The action crisis point is suspenseful though a bit vague in the conclusion…what happened to those who supported the loser?
I was hoping for some serious and painful payback for Reed’s awful parents but unfortunately did not get my bloodthirsty wish. The ending is wonderful.
The second half of the book is much more tightly written than the first half. I read an ARC that I am hoping has since been better edited and proofread. If those kinds of errors bother you as much as they bother me (A LOT!) then I warn you that you’ll be frustrated. But really if you stick with it I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in the story as a whole.
There appears to be room for more books in this universe. I would look forward to reading them keeping my fingers crossed for better editing and proofreading as the ideas and creativity are entertaining.

Content Warnings: remembered childhood neglect, on page domestic violence, kidnapping
If I missed any CWs, I apologize, I stopped reading too many times to count. I'd tell myself, "it'll get better", which it eventually did, but not enough to get rid of the bad taste the beginning of the book gave me. Jax never grew on me and poor Reed made me ache. I'm also not a huge fan of ABO with the forced gender stereotypes- huge, tough alpha with weak, victimized omega- unless the plot and world building are worth it. While the plot picked up pace, it didn't keep me transfixed.
One would think I'd be upset about the CWs, correct? No, not exactly. What upset me was the way Jax behaved at the beginning. He kidnapped Reed, first of all, then proceeded to be a jerk. Jax can literally smell the fear pouring from Reed but thinks, "oh his acting at being afraid is good, I'll give him that..." Seriously? YOU CAN SMELL HIM. You can also see and hear him. Ugh. Add to that the fact that these two lines (smell of fear, acting) are literally right next to each other in the text. It didn't matter how far I read, how much better Jax started to seem, I just couldn't move past this level of callousness from the beginning. And because poor Reed was a victim of abuse and neglect, it made it even worse in my opinion. We're supposed to forgive Jax (as is Reed) because Jax is trying to save his pack. So Jax's quick temper and callousness from the beginning are acceptable because he is under stress and assumes Reed is a spoiled brat? No thanks. I like my protagonists to treat others nicely until there's reason not to, no matter how they've been burnt in the past. Then Jax basically transforms into a good guy once Reed turns out to be an asset not a threat.
Cue romance. Except, I couldn't lose myself in it, which was unfortunate.
I'm usually a huge fan of character transformation and growth but it needs to come from some place genuine. Not only did the beginning spoil the entire story for me but there wasn't enough of anything else to compensate. Although the story did get better, I just couldn't bring myself to accept that Jax was at his wits end and really a good guy, just a hothead. The positives did not outweigh the negatives for me. Also, the epilogue... another nope from me.

4.5 stars rounding up.
As a person that is extremely new to the shifter genre in general I can support the claim that this is quite good an introduction.
We get an adorable story set in a not so adorable world (okay, a very cruel and sometimes sad world, not sure if this was 100% intended or if I am the only person who will pay so much attention to the parents and what they did). Jaxon is looking for a way to bring his pack home and Reed turns out to be the only solution to achieve that. It’s not the only reason their path cross.
It’s well written (as a non-native but fluent English speaker the dictionary in my Kindle had a bit of a workout and that’s a plus for me as I’ve learned a few new words). The story is quite predictable, but I won’t hold it against the book, it was still enjoyable and gave me a few laughs too 🙂 Its main strength lays in the side characters, Harlan is definitely my favourite here and I kinda wish we spent more time with him.
One thing I hated (and I’m using this word deliberately) was Jax, only at the beginning though. My pet peeve is people not talking to each other and the assumptions they make about others without asking. It is a tad hypocritical as my favourite gay romance has the whole angst of the book centred about not asking one single question, but there’s a good butt tattoo line that wouldn’t happen without it and it’s the one last thing that keeps me believing in love 😂 Sorry, circling back - once Jax starts behaving like a rational person instead of being led by hurt and prejudice it’s all smooth sailing till the end when you ask yourself “why did this end? I need more and I need it now”.
Overall I had quite a good time with this one. Definitely a good start for a debut.

This book was well written and even though it was a bit cliche I enjoyed myself for most of it.
One personal issue I had with the book is Jax, despite being the Alpha of the pack, is not very Alpha at all. I find this issue a lot in shifter romance when the author doesn’t want their main character to be an overbearing brute they go the complete opposite direction and make them very weak. His pack members walk all over him, not just his sister and her mate but anyone that voiced their opinion in this book, and they do it looking him in the eye even when he tells them no. I get part of Jax’s character was to be the opposite of Sterling and that he didn’t want to be a towering dictator over his pack, but there is a way to show he is personable and a comfortable figure for the pack without giving him no authority at all. I’m supposed to believe these wolves followed this alpha into the woods in exile and some fought to death for this alphas plans?
Another little pet peeve of mine is when a character that was wronged is the one trying to prove themselves to the one that wronged them, and I felt a little of that when reading this book. Reed was kidnapped and at least the alpha and his sister thought him to be a spoiled conniving brat that would cause their downfall. So when that’s proven false, the pack and his sister immediately come up with a different way to use Reed and Reed jumps at the opportunity because he wants to help these people…but why? Apart from the alpha being nice and one good and one bad interaction with other pack member, the pack didn’t really earn his favor. Apart from Jax it felt like to me Reed was still just a tool to them. I wish we had gotten more pack bonding scenes with Reed before the “mate with the Alpha” plan was hatched. I wanted Reed to be welcomed into the pack because they saw their mistakes, but because he was a tool to meet their end goal.

I never got to read the first edition of this book but I really enjoyed this updated version. The story is constantly moving and engaging as Reed tries to be the best that he can but is given little to no information, or contact and affection, by his parents in what is expected of an omega. When he is sold to an alpha, he is soon found wanting by the big bully and constantly put in his place, verbally and physically until he is kidnapped by Jaxon and his pack.
Jaxon is the rightful alpha of the Redwood pack and has vowed to take it back. He and his family was betrayed by an omega and so he thinks little of the one they kidnap until realising just how different Reed is from those he knew before. Hurt, fearful and unknowing, Reed doesn't know how to help except for doing anything he can to help the small pack in the woods and Jaxon, who makes him feel things he never has before. Jaxon doesn't feel like he can trust this attraction and needs to focus on bringing his pack to their rightful home, six years living as outcasts is long enough.
It is a sweet story with a harder underbelly as there is anger and betrayal, along with the brutish actions of the alpha that bought Reed, but to balance that you have the innocence and kindness of Reed and the small pack along with the slow burning romance between the two MCs. It's so good to read Reed grow as a character through the story, and Jaxon turning back into the caring, strong alpha he used to be before coming so focused on feeling like he is failing his pack. His sister and best friend are a fun and supportive pair but also not afraid to tell Jaxon as it is, much to his dismay and appreciation.
