The human body is a likeness of God, its design revealing insights into the church, the 'body of Christ' For bestselling author Philip Yancey, the late Dr. Paul Brand---the brilliant hand surgeon who devoted his life to the poorest people of India and Louisiana---was also a likeness of God, living the kind of Christian life that exemplified what God must have had in mind. In the Likeness of God combines the complete texts of Fearfully and Wonderfully Made and In His Image---both Gold Medallion Award--winners which together have sold more than half a million copies---into one volume. Also included for the first time are eight beautiful litanies of praise on the human body by Dr. Brand. In Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, Dr. Paul Brand and bestselling writer Philip Yancey explore the wonder of the human body and uncover the eternal statements that God has made in the very structure of our bodies. Their remarkable journey through inner space---the world of cells, systems, and chemistry---points to a still deeper unseen reality of God's work in our lives. In His Image takes up where the first book leaves off. In five sections---Image, Blood, Head, Spirit, and Pain---the authors unlock the remarkable living lessons contained in our physical makeup.
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Philip Yancey earned graduate degrees in Communications and English from Wheaton College Graduate School and the University of Chicago. He joined the staff of Campus Life Magazine in 1971, and worked there as Editor and then Publisher. He looks on those years with gratitude, because teenagers are demanding readers, and writing for them taught him a lasting principle: The reader is in control!
In 1978 Philip Yancey became a full-time writer, initially working as a journalist for such varied publications as Reader’s Digest, Publisher’s Weekly, National Wildlife, Christian Century and The Reformed Journal. For several years he contributed a monthly column to Christianity Today magazine, where he also served as Editor at Large.
In 2021 Philip released two new books: A Companion in Crisis and his long-awaited memoir, Where the Light Fell. Other favorites included in his more than twenty-five titles are: Where Is God When It Hurts, The Student Bible, and Disappointment with God. Philip's books have won thirteen Gold Medallion Awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, have sold more than seventeen million copies, and have been published in over 50 languages. Christian bookstore managers selected The Jesus I Never Knew as the 1996 Book of the Year, and in 1998 What’s So Amazing About Grace? won the same award. His other recent books are Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God’s Image; Vanishing Grace: Bringing Good News to a Deeply Divided World; The Question that Never Goes Away; What Good Is God?; Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?; Soul Survivor; and Reaching for the Invisible God. In 2009 a daily reader was published, compiled from excerpts of his work: Grace Notes.
The Yanceys lived in downtown Chicago for many years before moving to a very different environment in Colorado. Together they enjoy mountain climbing, skiing, hiking, and all the other delights of the Rocky Mountains.
This is a compilation of two of the books written by Dr. Brand and Phillip Yancey-"Fearfully and Wonderfully Made" and "In His Image". I have previously read "The Gift of Pain" which is also written by Brand and Yancey.
I am always amazed after reading these books how any person in the medical field could be an atheist or an agnostic. The human body is incredible. How it could have just evolved and not have been created by God is quite unfathomable. Brand, with the help of Yancey, covers various systems of the body and how they work in conjunction with each other. Yancey then supplies the analogies to the Church as the body of Christ on this earth.
Dr. Brand worked man years with patients with leprosy all over the world but mostly in India and finally Louisiana. Most of us hate pain and view it as a curse. Brand explains that pain is truly a gift from God because it shows us that there is something wrong in, or with, our body. Lepers do not have pain and as a result, they suffer immensely with the destruction of their bodies.
I plan on giving this book to a doctor friend of mine. Even those not in the medical field will enjoy the book. It is written in such a way that the medical terms and processes are explained very clearly, even for those of us not use to scientific terms.
Rating a book 5 stars is not something I do often anymore, but this book gets a 5 star rating because it inspired me to continue to pursue my career as a prospective healthcare professional with a newfound respect for the body of Christ. The lessons contained within the human body which apply directly to the body of Christ are marvelously profound. Dr. Paul Brand does an excellent job expounding on the meaning of God's creation as it pertains to the word of God, and I am forever changed because of God's work in this man's life.
Additionally, you will love reading about his mother, who was also a missionary. She is perhaps even more inspiring to read about than her son.
Excellent Read about an amazing man that God used to treat suffering.
This book shows how God can use common people who have a desire to ease suffering in mankind. Paul Brand worked in India among those who suffer from leprosy. He made discoveries and advances that no one else had seen. He applied his learning to Biblical teachings of Jesus to remind us to serve others and show God's love among a suffering world.
What a wonderful book. Not only does it help to explain the inner workings of the human body, but it equates these workings with our spiritual selves and how we relate with God. One of the very best books I have ever read.
A deeply touching book, teaching it's reader - with rare insight - things about the bodies both of man and of Christ. Dr. Paul Brand and Philip Yancey created a masterpiece. Read it if you can =)
