Codex: Space Marines

Rate this book
Space Marines are genetically augmented warriors, created as Humanity’s ultimate shock troops. Formally known as the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines have defended the Imperium for over ten thousand years. They go to war armed and armoured with the best wargear the Imperium can provide, complementing their enhanced strength, agility, and resilience. They are steeled in mind, body and soul to endure ceaseless war, facing the most monstrous threats throughout the galaxy and knowing no fear.

These steadfast warrior knights each belong to a Chapter – a close-knit brotherhood that dispatches strike forces of Space Marines across the galaxy. Supported by transport vehicles, battle tanks, combat walkers, attack craft, and powerful artillery, they execute lightning assaults of blistering speed and power. The Space Marines are the Emperor’s fury made manifest, and all his enemies fear them as the Angels of Death.

This Space Marine Codex for the tenth edition of Warhammer 40,000 follows the same basic structure as previous Codices with background and rules section but with two Showcase sections, one for ‘Eavy Metal painted models, the other painted by other Games Workshop staff. There is also a guide for painting the Space Marine Combat Patrol as Ultramarines.

As with the tenth edition Codex: Tyranid, a lot of the lore in the background section is copped verbatim (even including the same pieces of art in some cases), even when it references some units that are not part of the official rules this edition. There are some new pieces of lore in places, and these are mostly good.

The rules section of the book is also in line with the previous codex released for this edition, containing Combat Patrol and Crusade rules alongside the Datasheets for all the playable Space Marine units. Of these rules, the narrative Crusade rules are the most interesting as, in addition to giving them the usual faction specific Battle Traits, they allow players to promote characters and squads through the ranks of their Chapter. The rest of the rules are pretty standard for this edition, simplified from the previous edition and, in my view, with a little less variety.
