Let's start this review off with a big WOW! The Undead series is nothing short of amazing. I read the entire thing in a mere four days and was sad to see it end. It shocked me to find the series has yet to be picked up.
RR Haywood spins a tale of Mr. Howie, a night shift grocery worker as he fights off the wretched undead and meets some pretty awesome people along the way. Howie first teams up with Dave, a fellow co-worker at the store. Dave is a killing machine, methodical and devoid of social grace, it came as no shock when he revealed having Asbergers. His dry demeanor mixed with Howie's witty humor makes for some pretty deadpan comedy.
Joined by rookie soldiers Cookey, Blowers and Nick the comedy continues as they each dish out witty barbs. Each character is fully developed and believable. It's evident in the writing that a lot of thought went into creating them and the dynamic they bring to the group. Along the way, many more people are introduced. I won't go into their details, since that's the fun part about reading, but I will say they were each written just as well as the others.
Despite the never ending battle to survive, Howie and company continue in their mission to secure a safe haven for refugees. Destruction never ceasing to knock down their doors, the action is non-stop.
These aren't your garden variety zombies. They are a collective, pushed onward by an infection portrayed as an entity all it's own. The infection morphs and evolves in it's single minded goal to wipe out humanity. The undead aren't interested in eating its prey, it's only desire to spread the infection.
There are zombies of all shapes and sizes. Slow and lumbering, fast and vicious, thinking and plotting, seducing, vengeful...you name it, they've got it. The one thing they have in common is the red eyes. Lucky for the eyes or survivors would be completely fubar. The infection itself is original. It allows what could have ended up long and drawn out to keep me on the edge of my seat and never bored.
The Undead series is an ever changing, exciting work of fiction that will keep readers glued to the pages from start to finish. With it's terror, humor, unique story and likable characters, it is sure to be a huge hit with the masses.
Important note: This series is not for the feint of heart. In addition to the blood and guts, there is a lot of bad language (most of it pretty hilarious) and a few sexually explicit scenes that may be shocking to some. I appreciate the authors show of restraint as he did not harp on the uncomfortable moments. Oh, and spiders...lest we not forget the spiders. Haywoods description of poor Paula as she is stalked by an eight legged terror had me squirming in my seat and making noises of fear and disgust, followed promptly by a full body check and scan of my surroundings to ensure I, too, was not about to be attacked.
That's day 12 done and to quote my favorite movie: "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion!" WOW!! Such a roller coaster, it even had me sobbing at work... I am so conflicted as to where this story is headed, but I cannot wait to read on! There are so many twists, turns etc. but every step is believable and every heroic moment is doused in a flawed one...just like life. I am in awe of Mr. Haywood's writing yet again!

This book started off with a big traumatic disaster inside what should've been a safe zone, and I really felt sorry for Howie and his team. They did their best to save everyone and kill the zombies, and yet they were blamed for how people panicked.
Sergeant Debbie annoyed me. Her erratic behaviour was put down to a breakdown, but I think she was just jealous that when things went wrong, she couldn't step up to the plate and fight like everyone else. She hated the way Howie and his team were respected by everyone living at the fort.
The pacing was really good. The multiple POVs made me constantly eager to get the next chapter.
It was sad that so many people died just because the security became slack and things were missed.
I was surprised by Marcy's reaction to Howie, considering she hated him due to what happened on the island with Darren and vice versa. I don't like the new insta-lust that suddenly appeared between them.
This book was a lot longer than the previous ones in this series, so while it did take a bit longer to read, I still really enjoyed it.
I have very mixed feelings about this one. I think this series is great overall, with some awesome characters, lots of gore and plenty of action to keep you gripped. Haywood has no fear of killing off big characters and I have to respect that.
My issue with this book is some of the more graphic parts. There is a lot of rape, which I find uncomfortable to read about, and I think could be really upsetting to some people.
We meet some truly horrid characters and begin to see different sides to ones we already know.
The banter is unmatched and the dynamic between the characters is great. Things seem to go awry at the very end, making it feel rushed and wrong.
Despite my gripes for Day 12, my investment in Howie and co is too large to stop reading this series now…
This review is for the audiobook, part 12. Not day 12.
In part 12, the story continues with Gregory and the boy as the secondary plot. Howie and the team deal with the aftermath of the raid on the munitions factory, and all is not well back at the fort.
Shit really hits the fan in the crashing finale - I am so glad I already have part 13 downloaded, because I would not want to leave this as a cliff hanger!
I take back what I said about the last instalment being my favourite. This one was so good! I woke up at 2:45am last night and couldn't get back to sleep, so thought I might listen to a bit of this to help me drift off.... I was up until 6:50am (on a work day!) because I just had to finish it.
I was initially a little concerned about this one being 2-3x longer than any of the other parts, but I can see why. It started with a decent amount of set up, which was done in a way that kept it interesting. Lots of character development and social commentary in regards to how the fort was to be run and the consequences of the main characters' actions. Then everything kicked off around Chapter 33 and I just sped through the rest of the book.
I know that this series is not for everyone and it's perhaps not the most sophisticated book series, but I'm so into it. Not sure how the next book will be but it's another long instalment so we'll see!
