A DEFENSE OF ASTROLOGY, AS WELL AS SUPPORT OF VELIKOVSKY

Joseph F. Goodavage (1925-1989), was an American journalist, writer and astrologer. He wrote in the ‘Author’s Acknowledgement’ of this 1966 book, “This book is designed to lead you into the often strange, fascinating world of astrology---what it can do for you; how it may be used as a tool for understanding---by individuals, nations and scientific disciplines. I have been privileged to know some of the truth-seekers who have preserved the ancient study of astrology and carried it through the ages for your present enlightenment and enrichment. Knowledge of the celestial forces that govern the terrestrial sphere is TRUE SCIENCE.”

In the first chapter, he asserts, “Almost everyone has a ‘Time-Twin’ somewhere. These are people who have the same birthdate, the same hour of birth, and were born of the same longitude and latitude. It often happens that dozens of babies are born in big cities at EXACTLY THE SAME MOMENT!... For centuries, astrologers have been saying that people with identical horoscopes live parallel lives, with occasional differences explained by genetics and the station of position into which they were born. Until now, no one has ever proved it… I decided to look into the matter and ‘prove’ how fraudulent astrology really was. Here is what I learned: In 100 percent of the cases investigated, such ‘astro-twins’ do indeed show parallelism. They tend to become ill simultaneously and of the same disease---to suffer identical injuries at the same times and to the same parts of the body. The injuries often leave identical stars. They tend to get married, to have accidents, receive promotions, and have the same number of children at the same times and of the same sex---and they even die at the same times and of the same causes!” (Pg. 25-26)

He states, “There could be all kinds of ‘predisposition’ at birth---among ‘time twins’ as well as related twins. It is a well-known and universally recognized fact among astrologers that even identical twins who are born 45 minutes apart are not as alike as fraternal twins who are born within five minutes.” (Pg. 34)

He says, “[Astrology] was the life work of Kepler; he labored over his laws in order to perfect his astrological predictions. Newton’s primary interest was astrology. It was the problems posed by astrological ‘influence’ which caused him to investigate light and gravity.” (Pg. 48) Later, he adds, “Sir Isaac Newton violently disagreed with the then growing belief of lesser astronomers that the Copernican theory had finally killed astrology simply because astrologers used the Earth as the central focus of the system. Newton also used the Earth as a point of perspective in his astrological work---a fact that until recently was very little known. He insisted that Ptolemy’s astrological rules… were merely his way of dealing with the problem of relativity… Newton wrote over a million words on theology and ancient mysticism as well as 500,000 words on other esoteric subjects.” (Pg. 60-61)

He observes, “That the Earth has shifted its poles and changed its magnetic orientation is an established and proven geological fact. In his ‘Worlds in Collision,’ Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky attributes this to the incredibly close passage of Mars to the Earth-Moon system, which causes untold catastrophe and violence on this planet.” (Pg. 93) He continues, “the theory expounded in Dr. Velikovsky’s ‘Worlds in Collision’ is correct---that Mars swung into a remarkable perigee (closest approach to Earth) 27 centuries ago and was close enough for the two moons of Mars to be seen with the naked eye or with telescopes.” (Pg. 96)

He notes, “Some metaphysicians claim to perceive order and system in the NUMBERS of things in nature. And in the study of astrology, it’s almost impossible not to notice many correlations between astronomical cycles and their significance as numbers.” (Pg. 104)

He argues, “The prediction of terrible catastrophes is within the discipline of astrology. Meteorologists, geologists, and seismologists are generally of the opinion that the weather, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions are not at all connected. They also concur in the opinion that they alone (as ‘experts’) understand the basic cause of these natural phenomena, when in fact they do not. Any good astro-meteorologist will beat the entire mighty United States Weather Bureau hands down on long-range anomalistic forecasting. The Weather Bureau KNOWS this and squirms uncomfortably each time it is re-proven.” (Pg. 141)

He comments, “Dr. Immanuel Velikovsky, whose amazing ideas about planetary collisions caused a scientific furor in the 1950s, has lived to see himself vindicated in the mid-sixties by American and Russian space probes. If a global disaster occurred, it would cause great electrical discharges in the atmosphere… ‘The shifting of the axis,’ he said, ‘… must have occurred, and repeatedly, under the impact of external (extraterrestrial) forces.’ … The eyes of living men witnessed the raising of all the great mountain chains and the Great Rift of the African continent, according to the voluminous evidence compiled by Dr. Velikovsky.” (Pg. 171)

He continues, “Velikovsky’s data was taken from eye-witnesses who wrote the ancient records, from archaeology, geology, and the sacred writings of all the world’s people, including the Old Testament. Because of this unorthodox approach, his theories of catastrophism were dismissed as nonsense and Lyall’s [sic] Uniformism [sic] was largely upheld. Practically every scientist who exposed himself to Velikovsky’s radical theories was previously convinced that the ancient peoples of this planet were idiots, savages, or just plain ignorant about almost everything.” (Pg. 193)

Later, he states, “Immanuel Velikovsky reported that the ancient Chinese encyclopedia… recorded many destructions of mankind that ended each World Age. An ancient Greek writer named Hesiod however, told of five previous World Ages and the destruction of each with whole generations perishing before the repopulated Earth could resume its interrupted history. The Fire Bird of Atlantis and Egypt was the symbol of destruction and regeneration of the Ages of the World---as well as the endless reproduction of life itself.” (Pg. 236)

Goodavage’s book may be appreciated by fans of Velikovsky---but he makes too many broad statements that he provides no actual ‘evidence’ for, in my opinion.

This 1966 book is what Mark Lerner first bought that got him interested in the subject

Lerner doesn't really do any astrology books, but he did a Cosmic Calendar, and a pretty ok website, and he's always interesting on Coast to Coast AM talking for 2 hours a half dozen times a year.

one day he'll write something more than some theosophist book on Venus and astrology, and I wasn't keen on his occasional talk about ufos

.........

the weird thing is I remember buying Gooavage lurid book on the Comet Kohoutek

yeah who needs to correct that goo-average sounds cool

every 80,000 years Kohoutek offers the planet another Watergate and more CIA Mind Control revelations, and the death of rock music till the New Wave

till Planet Clare

I think I originally read this
book when I was about 13.

I think the author was a fantastic
writer. He gives a lot of evidence
for there actually being a lot of
scientific evidence behind astrology
and covers a lot of interesting subjects.

Some of the many subjects he covers
are astro twins, Atlantis, and unexplained
mysteries of Venus, Jupiter and Mars.

It covers some
astronomy subjects as well as astrology.
But of course regular astronomers would
never accept it.

The is absolutely one of the best non-fiction
books I have ever read.

I am just amazed that this book is not
better known.
