It's rare to find any book -- especially one presenting a picture of any indigenous people's history and culture -- that is as authentic, generous and wise as this one. Although I have been connected for over 50 years to the Sicangu (Rosebud) community in South Dakota where Richard teaches, I have never met him. But reading "My Grandfather's Altar" I felt like I was sitting with Lakota elders from my past, listening to them share their stories and perspectives on life. Editor Simon J. Joseph used a light, respectful hand and did not let his editing interfere with Richard's words -- what a blessing. Cheers to the University of Nebraska Press for understanding the importance of that. No matter your background or level of interest, you will find much to cherish and reflect on in the history Richard shares in this rare gift of a book. [When I read a print book, I like to put colored tabs on pages I want to return to. Most books I LOVE get a dozen or less... This book, well over 30.]
Loved this book! Very insightful and inspiring. Learned a lot more than I imagined about some of the history of the Lakota tribe as passed down through the generations of very spiritual medicine men. Also the conflicts that arise from being spiritual and being human. Having had the privilege of meeting Uncle Richard, I've seen his humility and the tremendous impact he has had and continues to have on 100's of people he gives his time and wisdom to.
