Idk if it’s because Chinese and English personal essay conventions are different or what but the essays in the back half were so weepy and to use an advo phrase, “did not set emotional stakes.” Maybe I’m heartless but I just dgaf about her mom and 哥哥 and whatever random remembrances she had with them. I feel like these should’ve gone in her diary. There are moving ways to write about death and passings (see: Alexander Chee!! Annie Dillard!!) and this didn’t do it for me. I did find the first half pretty interesting, if at least from an anthropological perspective. I was the one who selected these from the bookstore so that’s on me I guess. (Thanks aunt for buying them.)
对不起欣赏不来 🥲 First story was memorable; the rest was a blur. Perhaps it's the generational gap, perhaps it's the piecemeal writing style, or the unnatural dialogue - I felt more exasperated/frustrated than touched reading most of the book.
