A blood-curdling scream in the middle of the night awakens the Dempsey’s to a nightmare that will haunt them forever.
Their twelve-year-old daughter, Cassandra, is dead in her room. The horrible facial expression, frozen in death, on that once beautiful, innocent face testifies that something scared her to death.
Who or what did such a horrible thing to this child? Is it possible that, as most of the town believes, a ghost haunts the old Bed and Breakfast where the Dempsey’s lives and work?
Will Samantha Crocket be able to solve the mystery of Cassandra’s death in this short story and end the haunting? She has promised her boss that she will. He has directed her to do more than just end the haunting; he wants the culprit apprehended and brought in to face a special kind of justice.
There’s just one problem, if not human, how do you capture and apprehend a ghost?
Kenny Wayne is a veteran, a husband, and the father of three—one son and twin daughters. He lives in Mississippi with his wife, where Southern nights, childhood memories, and the mysteries found in quiet places fuel his imagination.
As a writer, Kenny refuses to confine his stories to a single lane. His imagination wanders—sometimes into the shadows, sometimes toward a gentler, romantic glow—and he follows it wherever it leads. This journey has taken him through ghostly mysteries, heartfelt coming-of-age stories, young adult romance, and speculative fiction with unexpected twists.
Whether he’s exploring the supernatural or capturing the humor and warmth of Southern life, Kenny’s work is rooted in heart, curiosity, and the belief that the best stories are the ones that surprise you… even as they stay with you.
Interesting! I wish there was more! Would have worked better as a novel instead of just a short, but it was still fun. The supernatural investigation business is a cool idea & I liked it.
I did notice a few grammatical errors, so it could use another round of proofreading. It wasn't to distracting though. Just something to mention.
A good pick for readers looking for a fast Halloween type read. 🙂
