This is the third book by JK Jones I've read in the last two years. He is always insightful and humble in his writings. This is not the kind of book you pick up and quickly read through. It takes time to read, re-read, think about, meditate (I.e. chew on), spend time in self-reflection and truly consider whether or not you are interested in turning your knowledge about Christ into knowledge of Christ. And then, determine what you are going to do about it.
JK begins by having you consider who God is and thinking about both correct and incorrect (from a Biblical perspective) views of God. Through his words and references to scripture, you see a great many of the attributes of God that help us understand who He is. There is also JK’s definition of spiritual formation, which I like, and quote here:
"God the Holy Spirit takes the initiative, through various means in cooperation with our response, and changes us to look like Jesus in order to serve others to the glory of God."
The rest of the book delves into spiritual disciplines (or holy habits as he calls them) that make up “our cooperation with the Holy Spirit”. He makes clear that these holy habits are not what saves us, but are our response to the saving work of Jesus Christ.
This is not a self-help book, but rather a consider how God can help you become more like Jesus each day.
This is an outstanding book that I will revisit often in my journey as a Christ follower.
