Disciples Are Made Not Born

Rate this book
Are You Tired of Comfortable Christianity?
Disciples. Most Christians know little other than Christ had twelve of them and that He commissioned these men to make disciples of all nations. But just what is a 20th-century disciple and how do you go about becoming one?

Walt Henrichsen not only describes a modern disciple but explains how to make disciples of others. It's a process that begins with sharing the Good News of the Gospel and doesn't end until you've shared your life so completely with another person that he is fully committed to similar spiritual service.

Discipleship is real sacrifice, but the reward is great-the satisfaction of knowing you have followed obediently in the footsteps of the Disciple-Maker Himself, Jesus Christ.

Walt Henrichsen, for many years associated with The Navigators in a leadership role, has since 1977 headed a discipling ministry for lay Christians in the business world. He has written a number of books, including this classic, first published in 1974. Walt and his wife, Leette, live in El Cajon, California.

This was my second pass through this book, and the first time I would have said I did not really like it but couldn't quite tell you why. Now I think I know.

The book is subtitled something to the effect of how to make disciples of Christians, and so that was my expectation. Yet something over the first third of the book seems to be not about how to make disciples but how to be one. While that might make some sense as groundwork, it tends to be somewhat of a cookie cutter concept, that all real disciples will have these common elements, and then this is not well supported. For example, because there are a couple places in the Gospels where we are told that Jesus rose early and went off by Himself to pray, the author concludes that all devoted Christians will always rise early every day and spend time in the morning in prayer and Bible study. My conclusion from personal experience is that this works well for "morning people" and not for people who are not thus; nothing is gained from falling asleep while trying to read Leviticus at five a.m.

This same tendency toward one-size-fits-all patterns continues to infect the text, despite several sections on helping someone find his own gifts and calling; and there are aspects of it which suggest that the author cannot get beyond his own background (in the Navigators). One passage in particular made the statement that Christians should always pray, and should expect to hear from God through scripture, strongly implying that God would never speak to a believer by any other means.

There is much that is valuable in here, including useful techniques, insight into the nature of discipleship and discipling concepts, and solid advice for putting Christ first in your life; but it is too often buried in cultural and personal baggage that makes it difficult to apply to lives that do not fit the mold of an earlier generation.

I’ve heard Walt Henrichsen’s sermon “Disciples are Made, Not Born,” and had been deeply challenged by it. But this book, much more of an investment than listening to the sermon, effected me much more deeply.

I am not a disciple-maker, as much as I so desire to be, and I have not given my life for the lives of others as Christ did for me. This book, page after page, is a stab at the comfortable, cultural Christian way of life, and says in its face, “You’re not the real thing.” Walt Henrichsen uses simple language and illustrations to express simple, yet deep, ideas.

The reason I placed this at 4 stars instead of 5 is because I was theologically confused by one of the final chapters, devoted to the topic of gifts and calling. I’m not sure if I just didn’t understand what he was saying, or if I actually disagreed with him theologically, possibly practically. Either way, overall, this book is a must-read for Christians who desire to actually live in the way of denying themselves, taking up their cross, and following Him in His mission for the world.

Very impressed with this book. Theologically sound with practical application. The presentation, however, reminded me of a college Bible rally. A friend of mine who is a former Baptist pastor gave me a negative report about the book, but my friend's Armenian theology explains why.

Discipleship. A topic that is often talked about and even taught from our pulpits, but seldom a topic that is actually lived out.
This book in many areas is very basic and in some areas very thorough, but I do believe the truths that are shared in this book can encourage each believer in Jesus not only to become a disciple, but as well to be equipped on how to be a disciple-maker. We have only one life to live; may we follow in the footsteps of Jesus and invest our lives into the lives of others who will in turn to do the same.

I had read this book for the first time 29 years ago and several times since. Now all of this time later having been in the mission field of the Middle East for fifteen years I still draw from insights in this book.
For those who have read it you may feel like me a bit discouraged with the statistics he shares, people coming to Christ in such numbers. I find it hard to believe based on what I've witnessed over my three decades of walking with the Lord. Perhaps things have changed greatly or the standards applied were much less and we have no way of knowing this.

Challenging book on the biblical requirement of discipleship. I was challenged by the need to invest in individuals. I was reminded that it takes alot of effort for spiritual birth and growth.

This book was written in the 70’s but is still so relevant today. Henrichsen was part of Navigators for years and uses his experience and knowledge to clearly lay out expectations for what discipleship is but very practical steps on how to do it. Almost all of what he says is applicable for today. If you are being drawn to deepening the discipleship process of your ministry start and finish here.

A great little primer on discipleship. Heinrichesen gets straight to the point - arguing the central position that making disciples should take in our expression of the Christian faith. Some helpfull wise insights into what a disciple is, and how we should be discipling others after Jesus' pattern.

Though an older book, I thoroughly appreciated the advice of this book. Henrichsen gives thought-provoking ideas on what mean to be a disciple as something beyond simply being a believer. He calls his readers to be more and do more but in a gentle and practical way.

A gift from my sunday school teacher in my teen. Was forced to read this as part of our bible study in class. This book has all the answers to "What is a disciple?" "How to make them and multiple?" and "how to invest in the lives of others?". It also reminds me the fulfillment that comes when one is faithful to God's Great Commission.

This book made me want to start a discipleship relationship with someone in my life. I think that is the highest compliment I could give to this book. It's a nice short read and covers the basics for someone who wants to obey the Great Commission.

I recommend this to anyone serving in any type of ministries. It's a great look at how Jesus did ministry. We try way too hard to do too much and miss out on depth.
