When dealing in Death, things become rather predictable. But Morticians Apprentice, Olivia Hunter, learned quickly that things aren't always as they seem, least of all her new mentor, Oberon Raith.
Born in the mid-1800's, Oberon grew up with his parents and three brothers as a member of an ancient Guild of Witches, but after an unspeakable tragedy rips his life to shreds, he finds himself alone and saddled with a dark Necromancy. And if things couldn't get worse, his new-found abilities peak the interest of Keanu Kennedy, a cruel and vindictive dark witch (who also happens to be a Cult Leader). Decades pass, with Oberon lost in a sea of grief, greed, and gluttony, until Olivia walks through the door, an echo from his past, and a guiding light for his future. As the weeks pass and their relationship blossoms, students start disappearing from Folke University, a local private college with a dark secret, with more than one of them turning up at the funeral home having died under mysterious circumstances.
It seems Olivia isn't the only ghost from his past who came back to haunt him.
1) All of the characters are insufferable. 2) Oberon is a weird little creep. 3) If I have to read a grown man calling his girlfriend a "dirty / greedy girl" one more time, I'm going to jump off a cliff. Honorable mention: "My needy little wife". In the context of their relationship it's just no. Absolutely not. 4) Keanu Kennedy? Seriously? 5) I don't mind erotica but you know it's too much when the smut starts getting annoying because it's just the same over and over again lol. If 2/3 are smut, make it interesting smut. 6) The plot had potential but was kinda meh. I felt very neutral about the writing style as well. Neither were good enough to remedy the book for me.
I really wanted to like this one but nope, I'm out.
I'd have given this a 2.5 if we got half ratings. You ever read a book and go "yep, this is for sure a KU book".
There was so many times that I thought "with slightly less repetitive sex, and more backstory, this would've made way more sense".
What happened to the dog? What happened to Olivia's parents and sister? Why are all of the brothers immortal and Keanu but not like everyone? So many unanswered questions that with more editing I think could've been ironed out.
Why did Oberon suddenly start taking on new students out of the blue? Is there no oversight on these placements? Major ickiness from the get go.
Also the random SA was totally ignored. She had NO PROBLEM with going back into the Morgue?? As an SA survivor I'd be super scared to do that. I wouldn't want my necromancer to fuck me afterwards. She has this huge moment of crying in the shower and never discussed her healing again.
Will not be finishing this series, can never forgive Gideon...

Okay, this is a Halloween book. I mean, feel free to read it all year. We all know Halloween is the single greatest day there is. This book though. Do you like spice? Of course you do. It’s on page ONE of this book! But then it instantly hooks you with the plot. There is this “what did I just read” moment that keeps you turning the pages and wanting more. It changes POV from the MMC and FMC. I love getting both views, and experiencing the story inside both of their beads. Overall, it’s a good book that will keep you turning pages. It’s an easy, smutty, entwining read. And I’ll leave your imagination with this: Embalming table.
Idk. The trigger warnings were fine. The book was okay, I liked the plot, but the writing was meh. I felt like it lacked enough depth to make the plot mean anything. I dnf'd at about 70%. It mostly felt like bit and pieces of random things that are kinda connected and maybe the author was going to connect them at the end but I didn't feel like it was worth it after an incident.
Spoilers ahead.... . . . . MFC was SA'd out of nowhere. And I feel like the whole incident was glossed over. First she's attacked and then saved but then he's violently beaten right in front of her, and mutilated. Then they do a trauma dump and then she freaks out for like.. a week and then suddenly she's relieved and okay enough for an intimate shower? Nah, I'm good. Seems like SA for the shock.

What a nice, unexpected surprise! Quite an easy and quick read for a nice night in. Amazing for Alice Green’s first novel! This hits some dark academia/magic/dark romance vibes I was wanting for October! -Lots of 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ -bisexual emo MMC -dark magic/necromancy -Sibling rivalry w/ hot brothers -resurrection -academia (regular and magic!) -crazy ex coming back -mortician vibes (fkn in a mortuary? yes yes yes)
2.5/5 This book was weird, kinda uncomfortable sometimes. Like talking to a dead body seems weird to me. sometimes its unclear if your in the past or present The girl was excited to work as a mortitian but she cries almost everytime, that seems like a sign to change your job she clearly cannot handle it.
giving a bj under the table while he is talking to people about a tombstone is disrespectful af, yes it is a book and yes it is fantasy but that just crosses a line. The reveal of her being his idea wife was lack luster.
I really really loved the plot of this and how it's a very different narrative compared to a lot of romantasy books I've read as of late. The two main characters definitely feel a little insta-lovey to me, which I normally hate (unless their fated mates), BUT this book made it work in its favor with secrets you learn along the way.
I genuinely loved the relationship between Oberon and Olivia. They really care for each other, and it shows on the page. I hope to see more of them in the next book ❤️
This book has extra brownie points for its spooky vibes, secret societies, twists, and witchiness.
I had the absolute pleasure of beta reading this novel. Green’s characters come to life as a hot, grumpy mortician and his saucy apprentice. Perfect for those who like their seasons spooky and their smut spicy! 🌶️👻
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. From the beginning to the end, I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day. Every free moment I had I was reading. Looking forward to the next book in this trilogy!
This book caught my attention from the very beginning. The characters are amazing and the story line flowed so well. There was just enough spice and love story and suspense so make everything work so perfectly: 1000% recommend this book.
I liked the book and the story. Nothing to scary or gross. If Darkish romance it’s not for you then don’t read it. I liked that he was so in love with her and he was NOT a jerk to her even that he was a little possessive obviously. 👏🏻
I can't believe I haven't done a review on this yet! I absolutely loved this story - spicy, dark, absolutely enthralling. I think it's safe to say I'm in love with Oberon, and that I'm reconsidering my career as a writer (suddenly I want to be a mortician.... or a mortician's apprentice). Love love loved book 1 of this trilogy and can't wait to see what's next!!
