Describing his honeymoon trip from Salt Lake City to Berkeley, California, a journey undertaken in 1930 in a "little Model T Ford," Elder David B. Haight observed, "Ruby and I crossed Nevada going a hundred miles an hour on those gravel washboard roads- thirty miles straight ahead and seventy miles up and down." That description is typical of the quiet humor that enlivens Elder Haight's sermons and discourses. Blessed with a common touch and a comfortable style, Elder Haight integrates personal experiences and testimony into his teachings in a way that makes learning from him a joy. A Light unto the World is a collection of those teachings, taken from addresses he has given in general conference and other settings since he was ordained an apostle in 1976. Of particular power is the unforgettable and poignant testimony given after his recovery from a serious heart attack, in which he describes the remarkable spiritual experience he had while lying unconscious, struggling to survive. Central to Elder Haight's message is his witness of the truthfulness of the restored Church and of the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. He teaches persuasively and concretely about the eternal importance of doing temple work, nurturing families, performing missionary service, reclaiming the lost sheep, negotiating spiritual crevasses, strengthening marriage, being honest, and partaking of the sacrament. And underscoring them all is his testimony of the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith. You will treasure these insights and the moving testimony of a gentle, much-loved apostle and a powerful witness of truth.
I only vaguely remember Elder Haight talks from when I was young. But, reading this compilation of reduced talks was a pleasure! He had such a way of balancing beauty, practicality, and clarity. I really enjoyed reading this book and have a new-found love for Elder Haight.
