Evans deftly handles the physical and emotional changes that come with being pregnant, looking at the practicalities of every stage as well as the challenges that may arise. Her no-nonsense, quirky and accessible text is illustrated throughout with detailed artwork to guide the reader through the intricacies of human reproduction, whilst her customary laugh-out-loud cartoons demystify the complexities of pregnancy and birth. The book includes: a graphic guide to conception; practical help for those trying to conceive; early pregnancy advice; information on abortion rights, miscarriage support, screening and scans, physical preparations for birth and the art of birth.
This book is AWESOME if you are a heterosexual couple wanting to have a baby in a "traditional" (read: without the need of any sort of medical intervention or infertility treatment) manner.
This book will not help you if you are a lesbian wanting to have a baby, except for the part where the author delves into the mechanics of the female body and how conception works. Except, you know, on p. 37, where she explicitly says that gay women can just go ahead and skip over those pages. (Wha?!)
Artificial insemination for gay couples is never mentioned. IVF is mentioned only twice — on p. 56 and on p. 69 — and mostly in passing. In fact, on p. 56, when it IS mentioned, the author (in one of only four mentions to gay people in the entire book) says, "gay friends are good to turn to, as they know what it's like to have to work to have a baby." Oh, really?
Other gay women references include one on p. 123, in which the author says that they, too, can find themselves in abusive relationships; and on p. 126, when she reminds us that sometimes lesbians may need to get an abortion.
Nowhere in this book are lesbian relationships mentioned at ALL, much less discussed in the context of having a child together. Nor is single motherhood mentioned (other than, of course, in the section on abortion and adoption).
All of these things are deeply, deeply troubling for me, as a feminist woman in the year 2015. I wanted to like this book, but I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone other than married heterosexual couples.

I loved this book. Bump is a funny, amusing, entertaining yet informative read.
The author illustrated a lot of things that were explicit (which some might not like - so be aware!) and I found the illustrations to be quite psychedelic and I enjoyed them! Good on her for doing it! I love that she's so open and communicates so open and well her information and messages throughout the book.
As a 21-week and something pregnant lady I find myself more encouraged and brave to go through with my own pregnancy. I can't wait to meet my own little darling! So thank you to the author for giving me more courage and the information that you have provided in here.
I was utterly ignorant of how much I could still learn about menstrual cycles and fertility (I knew I knew little about delivering a baby). Something in the book cover had put me off, but after failing to find the information I wanted in other sources I circled back to this one and was not disappointed. Highly informative, incredibly interesting and often hilarious. The book cover breadth vs depth, but in these topics I find that approach to be the perfect starting point. I will gift this book to every friend that let's me know she's embarking on the parenthood journey, and would still recommend it to humans in general. That's how good I think it is.
Honestly brilliant. I'm due to give birth in a few weeks and the thought has always terrified me. But Kate's book has helped me understand and appreciate what my body is capable of. I feel so much more mentally comfortable and in control. This book somehow achieves the perfect balance between giving you the facts and not freaking you out!
OMG best book to read when pregnant! I Just Loved this book for so many reasons!
Not only is it writing so engaging it is also brilliantly illustrated, making it so easy and enjoyable to read.
It truly made me laugh many times but seriously, the information, insite and Kates way of leading you through the whole thing is gold dust! So glad my freind told me to get this book!
Another beautiful book from Kate Evans, with practical, evidence based advice for anyone interested in babies and reproduction. Evans primarily seeks to empower mums to be - a great reference volume.
