He is the second son of the first father of The Obsidian. She is an orphan playing pretend inside an Italian convent. Separated as children, he promised to go back for her, she promised she would wait. Twelve years have passed, and he is finally tasked with finding his pair. But has she waited for him?

After all, Billy Blackwell and Penelope Hart are both such beautiful liars.

Haunt is a dark MF cult horror romance with extreme gore in its contents. If you have any sensitivities, this series is not for you. Please check out one of my other series if you enjoy dark romance without the extremities of graphic horror. Please read with caution. This can be read as a standalone, although, Billy and Penelope will feature in further books. There is a 'happy for now' ending and no cliffhanger in this novella. This is written in first person with multiple points of view.

Happy Release Day K! 💀

A hauntingly written, dark gothic romance by the absolute QUEEN of the genre. Billy and Penelope’s story had me hooked from the get go! I honestly couldn’t put this down, it’s a novella and you best believe I slid into K’s dms afterwards demanding a full length (she already has plans to luckily so no hands were thrown) 🤣

“I would bathe her in my blood, drown her in our sin, and it would fill the empty cavity beneath my sternum with something more than wicked, lustful fantasy”

K’s use of language is so beautifully descriptive it feels like poetry and I look forward to each release more and more.

Pick up Haunt today, it’s a perfect read for spooky szn 🖤

Will K ever bring out a book that I won’t love?! I don’t think so!
This story was the perfection introduction to the other Blackwells and The Obsidian. Billy and Penelope’s story is exactly the right amount of crazy and lovesick that you need.

I just want to crawl into K’s mind, she absolutely blew me away with this story. From the haunting atmosphere to Billy and Nellie’s character developments to meeting part of The Obsidian you can’t help but be captivated by every haunting word.
K knows how to build a world that you can just get absolutely lost in. Her ability to write these depraved characters that you can’t help but fall in love with is incredible. Billy and Nellie are perfect, the perfect TWO.

As always K has managed to wow me with another incredible story and such atmospheric words. Thank you for letting me go on and on about cults and give you such depraved scenes that we both was like “that’s so messed up!, we need it!” You went above and beyond , thank you for always listening to my endless talks even though I always say I’m chatting rubbish haha 😂

I can’t wait for more from the other Blackwells, I’m excited to learn more about Gore 👀

⚠️Read TWs BEFORE reading!⚠️

Whoa! What did I just read!?

K.L. Taylor-Lane's writing is dark and poetic. I couldn't tear myself from Haunt. It lulled in, lost in this, and wrapped up in both the story and atmosphere.

Penelope and Billy are positively perfect for each other, and I adored these two together!
Penelope is a twisted little thing, and I love the darkness in her.
I love how Billy feeds Penelope's darkness and bloodlust.

I really didn't want it to, but this ended so quickly and left me needing more. I can't wait to see where this goes.

Thank you for the ARC, K.L. Taylor-Lane! I'm leaving this review of my own volition.

I am a beautiful liar. And I will always do everything I have to, to protect my girl.

Haunt
is deliciously dark! This may be a short read, but it is dense, packing a wallop of dark and brutal themes in a small package. I loved the prose; how K.L. brought in the heavy, ever-present darkness that pervaded throughout. The horror elements were perfection! There is an underlying love story with high anxiety about what will come for the FMC, Penelope.

The MCs are the embodiment of obsession. Billy in his claiming and ownership of Penelope. Bringing her into the fold of the cult so she belongs solely to him. Penelope in giving in to all his demands, even when her mind wants to balk at the unknown.

It is not a particularly spicy book, instead building tension towards the finale - a very spicy public claiming ceremony to solidify their union.

Haunt ends at a HFN. I am very excited to see where the rest of their story leads.

⚠️ This is not a light and fluffy read. There are multiple dark elements that may be triggering to readers. TW list may be found at https://www.instagram.com/p/CwhhEuvLbYq/ or in book. ⚠️

"I am pulled towards him by something that lives deeper inside of my skeleton than marrow, an infection burrowed beneath my skin that I do not want to cure."

Billy and Penelope took me by surprise. I was immediately intrigued after just the prologue. Everything is very ambiguous. I felt like I knew nothing the entire book and I was here for it. This story was unique with so many delicious triggers thrown in.

I felt like I was discovering everything right alongside Penelope. It was an awesome experience. Of course Billy caught my attention from the beginning. I feel like there is so much substance to this story just waiting to be uncovered. I want more. I need more!

This book is a perfect gory quick read. I got through it super fast because I was dying to see what would happen next! I didn't want to put it down. I was on the edge of my seat right up to the end. The last few chapters had me trying to catch my breath. I like the "I am lovesick" repetition. At first I wasn't sure but after finishing the book it just adds to the story. It adds to the depth of these characters.

"A big house full of dark rooms and low lights, just Billy and I. Lovesick little demons creeping in the dark."

I am eager to see where Billy will take Penelope next😈

I love a good dark romance, but I've been struggling lately to read the genre...until this novella by K.L. Taylor-Layne. Haunt drew me in from the very first page and left me desperately wanting more.

Billy is the second son of the first father of The Obsidian and he's come to claim his pair. Billy and Penelope were separated as children, and although Billy promised to go back for her, it took him 12 years to do so. Now, it's time to take what has always belonged to him.

This is a dark cult horror romance. There are a lot of triggers and some pretty graphic gore here so this definitely won't be for all readers. Personally, I found myself being equally parts grossed out and turned on by this twisted little read, so I'm not sure exactly what that says about me.

While this can be read as a standalone and does end in a HEA (for now), there is a second book coming and I can't wait for it.

Blindly went into this ARC, absolutely love the author but life’s been wild and I didn’t know much about it, and good lord hahaha That was a trip! Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Dark, unh!nged stuff. Less romance, more gory love. The entirety of this was a whole vibe. You have an FMC & MMC who have been separated for 12 years, utterly in love with each other, and then BAM, he finds her in an orphanage even though she’s in her 20’s. Rekindling their flame is top priority, after disposing of a body of course, and he’s one obsessive f cker who needs her to join the same cült so they can be together forever. THE CEREMONY?! Oh my damn. Just please read it & have your jaw drop the way mine did. So good. Go. Read. It.

’It is a foreboding, this omen that could possibly be our love.’

The introduction to this new series is positively breathtaking.
The fact that this is a cult/horror romance absolutely captivated me. The perfect time for something so sinister and sexy 😘

The writing is deep and flows so beautifully; really letting you into the feelings and innermost thoughts of Penelope and Billy.

I cannot wait to uncover more of their story.

Highly recommend

I devoured this book in one sitting, eagerly drawn into Penelope Hart and Billy Blackwell's tale. K.L.Taylor-Lane uses language in such a way that brings the story to life, and you are there as a bystander watching the events occur. You feel the characters emotions, their anger, their love and their pain.

This book isnt for the faint hearted and those who dislike dark themes. But if you decide to proceed, buckle up and dive into the world of Raven Ridge Hallow.

Nothing and I do mean nothing can describe how crazy this book is but I loved it. After reading it I questioned myself if I was mentally unstable because I liked it so much. I have this fascination with cult things and this hit the spot. This book left me craving more. I need more. I'm pretty sure this author puts some type of spell on you while you read that leaves you wanting more. This book is a must-read if you love dark cult romance.

If you're looking to add to your spooky TBR, then Haunt is the perfect add!!

When I got to the end, I literally couldn't believe it was over. I just wanted more of Billy and Penelope!

After being separated from each other for 12 years, they knew that their love was deep within their bones, and what they had from childhood was something they could never get over!

This book will hit ya in all the feels, feeling everything each of the characters feels too!

You will definitely want to check out this quick, dark, crazy wild novella!

🔥 be sure to check those trigger warnings though because there are a lot!

It's short and gory, good for Halloween, but it severely lacks in depth and plot development. By the end, you still don't have a grasp of wtf is happening or why or what motivates everybody. Still not 100% sure what was with the guy under her bed or how that came to be. There's just too much missing information for me. The ritual was cool but again...why? What's the point? This novella was trying to be spooky and mysterious, but it never really makes a point and that just sucks all the suspense out of it for me.

HAUNT by K.L. Taylor-Lane
Raven Ridge Hallow #1

✨ A gothic, cult-centered horror romance that blends obsession, devotion, and brutality in a way that feels visceral and cinematic.

Billy Blackwell and Penelope Hart were bound by childhood promises with him vowing to return, and her vowing to wait. Twelve years later, he is tasked with finding his destined pair, and she is no longer the innocent girl he left behind. What unfolds is a twisted bond shaped by devotion, indoctrination, and the darkness of The Obsidian.

What I Loved:
🩸 A sharp, atmospheric blend of cult horror and dark romance
🖤 Obsession-forward MC dynamics that feel intentional and character-driven
🏚️ Gothic, heavy prose that builds tension in every chapter
🔪 Horror elements woven into the relationship rather than separate from it
🔥 A slow rise toward a ritualistic, high-tension final act
💀 A HFN ending that leaves space for what comes next in their story

Vibe: gothic, unsettling, intimate, cult horror romance
Spice: minimal through the story; intense and ritualistic at the finale
For fans of: extreme dark romance, gothic horror, obsessive bonds, cult settings, and novella-length brutality

💜 This novella delivers a concentrated hit of atmosphere and psychological tension. It’s a strong starting point for Billy and Penelope’s storyline, and I’m curious to see how their arc deepens in the rest of the series.

ARC review for 'Haunt' by K.L. Taylor-Lane

'𝔚𝔬𝔲𝔩𝔡 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔩𝔦𝔨𝔢 𝔱𝔬 𝔤𝔬 𝔬𝔫 𝔞𝔫 𝔞𝔡𝔳𝔢𝔫𝔱𝔲𝔯𝔢?'
ℭ𝔬𝔪𝔢 𝔦𝔫𝔱𝔬 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔡𝔞𝔯𝔨𝔫𝔢𝔰𝔰, 𝔗𝔥𝔢 𝔒𝔟𝔰𝔦𝔡𝔦𝔞𝔫 𝔞𝔴𝔞𝔦𝔱𝔰 𝔶𝔬𝔲.

Billy and Penelope met years ago, as children. Their bond was instantaneous, deep, infectious, significant. But some scheming tore them apart. Yet, neither of them refused to let go, to forget. They made a promise to find each other, to be loyal, to wait ...

Penelope Hart is a young woman now. She was wronged by those who supposed to protect her. She became a weapon of destruction of their own God. But she stayed loyal to her God, Billy.

Billy Blackwell is a second son of the first father of The Obsidian. He's 'the white goat', missing his 'black lamb'.

'𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝑜𝓃𝓁𝓎 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝐼 𝓌𝒾𝓁𝓁 𝒶𝓁𝓁𝑜𝓌 𝓉𝑜 𝓅𝒶𝓇𝓉 𝓊𝓈 𝒶𝑔𝒶𝒾𝓃 𝒾𝓈 𝒹𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒽.'
'𝒟𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒽, 𝐿𝒾𝓉𝓉𝓁𝑒 𝐿𝒶𝓂𝒷, 𝒾𝓈 𝑜𝓃𝓁𝓎 𝒿𝓊𝓈𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒷𝑒𝑔𝒾𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔, 𝒻𝑜𝓇 𝓅𝑒𝑜𝓅𝓁𝑒 𝓁𝒾𝓀𝑒 𝓊𝓈.'

This is a story of lies and deception. A story of love and a downfall. Billy knows he did wrong leaving Penelope behind, but he had no choice. Now, he's back and even though she's promised to him, 𝓌𝓇𝒾𝓉𝓉𝑒𝓃, he knows it will be her undoing. Their love is tragic, it's pointless, but it's their inescapable way of salvation, their own freedom in the imposed shackles of theirs.

Billy and Penelope are raw, savage, both capable of brutal things. And yet, they are beautiful, vulnerable and fragile. They are everything and nothing. A day and night. '𝑀𝑜𝓃𝓈𝓉𝑒𝓇𝓈 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝒻𝓁𝑜𝓊𝓇𝒾𝓈𝒽 𝓈𝑜𝓂𝑒𝓌𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒 𝒾𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒾𝓃-𝒷𝑒𝓉𝓌𝑒𝑒𝓃.'

It is a sickness. My love for Taylor-Lane's writing. Her intricately woven webs of words draw me into the darkness and macabre like a moth to the flame. It's a dark poetry. It's a poetic darkness.

“Billy Blackwell is a beautiful liar.” That was all it took to draw me in because Blackwells don’t tell lies; if you’ve read any of The Blackwell Brothers series you’ll know this. But Billy is one of the other Blackwells and even after reading Haunt, I’m not entirely sure what to make of them.

Billy and Penelope met years ago as children in an orphanage. There’s no backstory explained for this but as this book is a novella and the pair still have a story to come, I’m going to assume that all will become clear in the next book, Lovesick. The machinations of Billy’s family tore them apart 12 years previously but now Billy has come back into Penelope’s life, set on claiming the other half of his pair.

It’s not a simple case of the two deciding they’re in love and giving it a go. Billy needs to initiate Penelope into the Blackwell family, the Obsidian, the mysterious cult he and his brothers are a part of. There is the suggestion that it may have already destroyed his older brother and Billy struggles with the idea of letting the others see Penelope’s devotion towards him because of this. He also realises that in giving her himself, he is taking the whole world away from her, and it makes you wonder just what Obsidian is and what it does.

As you read Haunt you realise that there are two inalienable truths in Billy and Penelope’s lives: firstly, they are lovesick for each other; secondly, they are both beautiful liars. It’s a conundrum that leaves the reader questioning every word, every action, and every motivation. I’m already desperate to read Lovesick so I can look back at this book to discover what was real or not.

If you’re here for all things gothic, you’re going to love Haunt. It has everything that’s made The Blackwell Brothers series great but also takes a darker twist, venturing into the realms of horror. It’s beautifully and violently descriptive and holds nothing back. My only complaint is that the book wasn’t enough. Like Torment Me before it, it pulled me in, captivated my mind, and then told me I need to wait months to find out what is actually happening. K. L. Taylor-Lane is a cruel mistress, but one that has my complete devotion.

This novella was my first introduction to the Blackwell world, and I clearly had been missing out.
The story is compelling, mysterious and intense from the start. Billy and Penelope are obsessed with each other and I believed every moment of it.
The writing style is so addictively beautiful.

I am becoming increasingly fond of Horror romance and have found a lot of good writers by now, with K.L. Taylor-Lane definitely being one of them.

The novella is the beginning of the Raven Ridge Hallow series. The next book is Lovesick, and it can’t come soon enough!!

Blurb, because it’s missing on Goodreads:
He is the second son of the first father of The Obsidian.

She is an orphan playing pretend inside an Italian convent.

Separated as children, he promised to go back for her, she promised she would wait. Twelve years have passed, and he is finally tasked with finding his pair.

But has she waited for him?

After all, Billy Blackwell and Penelope Hart are both such beautiful liars.

I was so excited for this book, (in case I’m not clear here, it MORE than met my expectations, I LOVED it). I don’t remember if it was a chapter or a prequel, but months ago I read a short on this. It was the beginning, when Billy Blackwell and Penelope Hart were first in the orphanage. I was prepared for the dark content. I think what I appreciated most was how K.L. wrote her main characters, both of them were broken, for different reasons. You can clearly see how they cope and they don’t from their interior monologues. Penelope, perhaps more so than
Billy, desperately needs Billy to be telling the truth this time, she has waited so very long for him.

Billy is the second son of the first father of The Obsidian. We know that Penelope is his pair, and if she fails, they both fail. That The Obsidian is as dark as its name implies. Everything else, is taken on faith, the same faith Penelope offers Billy when she takes his hand and submits.

How much of yourself would you be willing to sacrifice to be with the one that completed you? Would you blindly submit? Follow their directions without complaint? Step into the darkness and hope they teach you to fly? I guess we’ll find out in the next installment.

“I would bathe her in my blood, drown her in our sin, and it would fill the empty cavity beneath my sternum with something more than wicked, lustful fantasy.”

WOW! This was a hauntingly dark, twisted and bloody story that instantly had me enthralled and devouring every depraved moment of it. The eerie and terrifying imagery that was woven into this strange and hypnotic story, lulled me in and had me craving all of the bloodlust alongside of Penelope and Billy.

Penelope and Billy were the perfect combination of terrifying, twisted and unhinged characters that feed off of sin and blood. They captivated me with their passion and devotion to one another and their obsessive need to be together.

"I am pulled towards him by something that lives deeper inside of my skeleton than marrow, an infection burrowed beneath my skin that I do not want to cure."

The writing was beautifully poetic and poignant making it extremely difficult to tear my eyes away! I absolutely can’t wait for more!

Billy and Penelope were only together at the orphanage for one year, but that was enough to solidify they connection. When Billy left, he swore to Penelope he’d come back to get her. She didn’t think it would take twelve years though…

Penelope is pretending to be something she’s not, I order to stay at an orphanage in France. She hides her darkness under her innocent looks. One day Billy does come back for her. He tells her he’ll never leave her again. Little does she know what sacrifice she’ll make for that to happen….

Billy and Penelope fit together perfectly, no matter how jagged their edges are. Unconditional, obsessive, love despite the long period of time having been separated from each other. Finally finding her, he’s not letting her go and will do everything, anything, in order to stay together. Forever.

"𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙠."

Dark. Decadent. Depraved. Delicious. Macabre.
These are the words I would use to describe this book. Honestly, what did I just read? It’s book like these that remind me why I love horror romance so much. The writing itself was just haunting and beautiful.

This is my book intro to K.L.’s books and it most definitely not be the last. I have found a new favorite author guys. I definitely recommend for it’s the perfect short read, especially for this spooky season.
