What started off as a slow read for me, ended up being something I couldn't put down. There was a lot to unpack here, but the deeper into the story you go, the more you learn, with lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I'm intrigued to see where the author takes us on the next adventure within this saga, because with that ending? There definitely has to be more.
Out of the gate, let me admit that I'm not a gamer and this book is obviously based upon one and reads from a gamer's POV. But, after I got used to the story structure, the narrative took over. The action begins almost immediately and stays on high through the entire book. As the MC makes his way from point to point, fighting "boss" after "boss," the scenes become more and more disturbing and gruesome. There are endless, cleverly devised puzzles he must solve to get through to the next challenge, and they are connected to real world knowledge that was intellectually stimulating, within the gruesome confines the MC was face with. All of the action is intertwined with an intricate and diabolical mystery that wraps up nicely at the end, though the author provides us with alternative endings and I think I preferred the evil one. Great story for both gamers and non-gamers looking for action and intrigue.
Full disclosure, I read this in June and July of 2025. Since then, this novel has been re-branded as Sacred Valley: Betrayal. With that, some of the old "Silent Hill" specific things are gone. Now set in Sacred Valley, you can still tell where the old Silent Hill moments were. The books definitely resonate more for those who are gamers, there are game elements still present in the novel. The author took time to go through and make the creatures his own while still feeling very at home in the Silent Hill style.
You also get a surprise in the back of the book, but I won't say anymore than that.
