In Boy and Grandad Sam Usher has created characters that are becoming a staple, when a new book comes out which features them, we know we have to get our hands on it, read it (over and over) and then add it to our growing collection – it’s a good thing we have plenty of bookcase space! There are eight titles to choose from that have been previously published and now, with Zoom! we have a ninth. It gets better… Zoom! is the first of a new quartet that will find Boy and Grandad making, mending, and reusing all sorts so that they can have some more adventures, this time in space. What makes these books so special to us, and I hope will to you too, is the bond between Boy and Grandad as well as the delightful, heart-warming adventures they have. Sam Usher reminds us how much fun can be had with the simplest of activities.
When Boy went to bed it was simply too hot to sleep. It was hotter than Venus, the Sun, even the Big Bang. Grandad has the best solution though – the roof where he is certain it will be cooler. Of course, you can’t go to the roof without a telescope for star gazing. But what happens when you can see the stars through it, but it seems the zoomer-inner isn’t working? Grandad fixes it… Then it gets a little blurry? Grandad fixes it again… And on it goes until Boy can see the stars, a planet, a space module, astronauts… But what is this? It looks as though the astronauts might be in trouble! Luckily Boy and Grandad, with a little bit of measuring and designing, a few pompoms and extra features can build a rocket and zoom off into space to help. Another wonderful story, to enjoy and treasure. I wonder what is coming next…?
