Kiyoshi Nagai (永井潔 Nagai Kiyoshi, born September 6, 1945 in Wajima, Ishikawa), better known by the penname Gō Nagai (永井 豪 Nagai Gō?), is a Japanese manga artist and a prolific author of science fiction, fantasy, horror and erotica. He made his professional debut in 1967 with Meakashi Polikichi, but is best known for creating Cutie Honey, Devilman, and Mazinger Z in the 1970s. In 2005, he became a Character Design professor at the Osaka University of Arts. Since 2009, he is a member of Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's nominating committee.
Volume 15 continues with the same intensity as the previous volume. I believe Nagai is returning to his core anti-war theme that resonated in the original Devilman series.
Although it seems rushed, Jun's decision to side with the humans feels detrimental to the direction of this series. It will be interesting to see where this goes. I'm not to convinced on the subplot with Dante though. If it's going the way that it's been foreshadowed, it'll have been way to predictable.
Rating Update 4/4/2019- 4 stars to 3 stars. I may be too generous in this. I greatly enjoyed the decisive moment that Jun has to take a side and how the plot is escalating. However, Dante's journey through Hell is very boring. It takes up more than half of it. I will leave this volume at 3 stars because it's amazing in every other way, except Dante's journey.
Rating Update 29 May 2019 Three stars to two stars. I feel that the boring scenes outweigh the four and three star content.
September 1, 2019 Update With the adoption of my new rating system, a two star rating is befitting. The original review and rating updates conform to the new rating system. I have looked through my "Devilman Lady Abridged" folder to remind myself of this volume's content. I cannot understand how the previous sections of the review refer to the escalating plot as a positive. Looking through the volume, I can't find a reason to raise the rating from a two star-rating to a three star-rating. There's the positives of the continued creationism/gnosticism being explained in the first part of the volume, the few pages of the H.A. noting the increasing dangers in the world and Jun's leadership, but its brought down by Dante's journey through Hell and the fight scenes between the H.A. and the church. In my "Goodreads Books" excel worksheet, I had written to change the rating back to a four star-rating, but I don't understand why. Everything previously mentioned seems to lead to a two star-rating.
