Firsts in the City #3

That First Flight

Rate this book
Something tells me, nothing I do can stop myself from feeling things for my roommate.

I’ve always wanted to be a chef.

But the same day two pink lines showed up on the test, was the day I gave up chasing my own dreams to put my daughter first.

I didn’t expect that to lead to a life of being scrutinized by my parents for every single move I made.

After years of it, I was done.

I caught the first flight to New York. I was already filled with nerves before we even took off until a stranger with an infectious smile, heartbreaker blue eyes and a personality that can light up anyone's life, took the seat next to me.

Months later, the same man shows up at my bar in a small town in the mountains. This time he’s eager to learn more about me.

I thought telling him I have a daughter would make him run back home, except now I find myself as his new roommate in the city.

I told myself I wasn’t going to get involved with him.
I told myself that I’m here to live out my dream of being a chef.
But somewhere along the way, he stole my heart.
And if I had to take a guess… It was back when we took that first flight.

Esto fue una total SORPRESA. Es súper irrealista, como todo buen billionaire romance. Es cute y es dolorosamente WHOLESOME. Me encantó. No es lo mejor que he leído pero me hizo muy feliz.

Truly, where do I begin on this review? Because I don’t even know how to put my love for Oliver & Macey into words… they’re a magical couple & Jenn’s portrayal of them was *chefs kiss*

A single mom, running from home with her young daughter meets the love of her life by chance on a plane to NYC. I don’t know it gets anymore serendipitous than this, but then Oliver opens his mouth and calls her “Seat Wife” and I have to say, I am up for grabs if anyone is looking for a seat wife. (Though I think I may be Jenn’s, hold please.)

After not seeing Macey for a while, he happens to stumble upon the restaurant she works at as a bartender/waitress and after spending a little bit of time together, is immediately infatuated with her and her daughter and offer them the chance of a lifetime to let Macey fulfill her dreams.

“I don’t want to be your charity case.”
“Is that what you think you are? The last fucking thing I ever want you to think you are, is a charity case, Macey Evans. I didn’t buy this for you because that’s what I thought you were. I bought it because I want you to feel good going into your interview. I drove you here with a single suitcase for you and one half the size of that for Mackenzie. I had a gut feeling that there wasn’t anything in either of those that would make you feel ready to nail this interview.”

Macey’s love language is feeding people and Oliver’s is definitely gift giving & grand gestures. Mans knows how to make a girl fall hard.

I also love that Macey didn’t have a ton of experience and Oliver made her feel seen through all their moments together. It took Macey some time to get there even though it was clear Oliver needed no time at all. And for such a golden retriever I did NOT see the mouth on this man coming in hot.

“I’m not all the way in, baby. Arms over your head,” he orders. “Grip the bars of the headboard and don’t let go.”

Sir, yes sir. 🫡

A puddle, okay. An actual puddle.

To top off this wonderful masterpiece, can we talk about how Mackenzie fell in love with Oliver as a friend and a father figure? How Oliver willingly stepped up to the plate when she needed him without even realizing how badly she needed it? I was crying when Kenzie confided in him about things with school and her mom… the fact that she felt safe enough to. The girl was wise beyond her years and it was clear she just wanted to be a kid.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

ARC Review
Pub date: March 4

I wanted to like this one so badly! I have seen this series all over social media lately and decided to jump right into the 3rd book (I don't feel like I missed anything by doing this) and I'm so bummed that my first book from this author fell flat for me.

It was cute and the plot had a lot of promise, I just could not get over how outrageously cheesy it was. And this is coming from someone who LOVE cliché romance books- it was painful at some parts. My other critique of the book (and a lot of books do this) is when there is a child character and their dialogue and actions do not match the age that the character is supposed to be. I can respect if a character is "mature" for their age, but in this instance I truly don't see an 8 year old saying half the things this child did..

I know this series is loved by so many, so it very well could just be a me thing! If you are interested in the series, I definitely recommend still giving it a try. Different strokes for different folks :)

Favorite Quote: “You should already know that I’ll give you anything you want. You want control, I will gladly get on my knees for you. You’re my weakness, Macey.”

I actually will never recover.
like ever, ever, ever.
this series has my entire heart and I never want it to end and the fact that we only have one book after this is making me so sad...

Macey has always had dreams of working in NYC as a chef but after getting pregnant at 16 her plans had to change because now they included providing her her precious little girl Mackenzie. After years of suffering in silence from her parents behavior she decides to leave and go to New York and try her hardest to get herself to the city and on that flight she meets a man named Oliver and they instantly hit it off but loose eaother before exchanging contact info until he walks into the bar she's working at and he wants to take her and Mackenzie back to the city with him.

Oliver is such a golden retriever and the things he did for Macey I SWOONED so friggen hard. like him trying to learn to cook for her? can you say perfection. & him giving her AND her daughter a nickname. I can't stand the cuteness. I loved and told Kenzie way before he said it to Macey idk it just hit different and my heart soared seeing their relationship blossom. I won't like I teared up quite a few times and i didn't expect that after how sweet the first two books of this series were. this was so different but gosh SO GOOD.

& can we talk about the texting banter? as always IMMACULATE
& the found family? plz, PERFECTION.

I will never shut up about this series so you might as well start with That First Night and get read for this one.

This is one of those books that gets better and better the more you read it. Macey is a single mom working to make her dream for being a chef in New York City come true. When her and her daughter were on a flight she ended up sitting next to a charming stranger only to never see him again… until they have a chance encounter 5 months later. When Macey sees Oliver again they pick up right where they left off from the flight. When Oliver learns about her dream to become a chef, he offers her the chance to come back to New York City with him to interview at a friend’s restaurant. They’ve always had this connection, but now that they living in the same apartment it continues to grow.

This was cruising along at a solid 4 or 4.5 star read until I got to the last 25% or so and there were so many moments that melted my heart it has to be a 5 star. Macey is so strong, doing what’s best for her daughter while also trying to chase her dreams. I loved their mother/daughter relationship. They were so sweet to each other and always checking in to make sure they were alright. I loved how many filial gets that chance to breathe and have that support system from Oliver and his family/friends.

Oliver was just perfection. I mean he was the sweetest, most caring guy. He fell first and hard not only for Macey but also her daughter, Mackenzie. I loved how he made it a priority throughout the book to make Mackenzie feel loved while also falling in love with Macey. He was so supportive of Macy chasing her dream and was happy and willing to remind her of that with his words or his actions.

Gosh and then the epilogue?! 🥹😭

oh my goddess to say I’m obsessed is an understatement. I knew this was going to be my favorite just by the dedications 🥹 I forced myself to slow down and take in every single moment of this book because I knew without a doubt I could have finished this in one sitting, but I did not want it to end.

Oliver Ford is definitely holding the number one spot of book boyfriends. He is so perfect in every way, the things he did for not only Macey but for her daughter Mackenzie made my heart beyond happy. He was exactly what they deserved and needed.

“I was trying to teach myself how to cook.”
“Why didn’t you just ask me to teach you?”
“I wanted to surprise you.”
“Why?”
“Because…. I wanted to learn how to do the thing you love the most.”

I love ollie with my whole soul 💚😭

Being raised by a single mom myself I loved Macey and Mackenzie’s relationship so much and it is so relatable. That in its self made me fall in love with the book instantly.

This book was the perfect mix of swoon and spice but throw in a few tears and a lot of happy moments. It was all around amazing and I can’t wait for Emiline and Logan’s story next.

This is my favorite book by Jenn but I definitely recommend the entire series if you have not read them! 🤍

I was so excited to read this being it was my book written by this author and now I immediately want to go back & read the other books in the series.

That First Flight follows Oliver and Macey who end up meeting on a plane. Despite hitting it off, they don’t exchange contact info & go their separate ways. Macey is a single mom, picking up and moving from Montana to make a better life for her and her daughter, Mackenzie. Well Macey & Oliver end up crossing paths again in a small town. Oliver knows Macey has a dream of becoming a chef in NYC & wants nothing more than to help her… which is how they wind up as roommates in the big city.

Oliver & Macey’s story was so so sweet, emotional and heartwarming. Oliver was so swoony & was really good with both Macey & her daughter knowing the struggles they’ve faced.

That First Flight Arc Review 🛩️💚

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

The story started off strong, I loved their meeting and then how Jenn set it up for them to coincidentally meet 5 months later again.

Oliver surprised me. He was in the other books but not really as he was constantly travelling for his job. Seeing him have his own book and find Macey and Mackenzie was just so beautiful to see.

Macey had a rough past and the fact that she got to find herself AND her happiness with the help of Oliver was so touching to see.

Seeing the gang back together was probably my favourite part of the book. I have missed these characters so much. That one particular Peyton and Thomas scene had my jaw on the floor, did not expect that, so happy!!

Macey’s parents were gross. The fact that they were forgiven so easily didn’t sit right with me. One moment we had her mother being absolutely disgusting, the next she’s apologising. Macey forgave her too quickly and I thought it was odd how her parents switched up fast.

At times I was a little bored. Oliver and Macey would do stuff but then they would act like nothing happened? They didn’t speak about becoming offical for so long.

Coming from the first two and loving them I had high hopes for this one but was left a little disappointed. I got to about the 65% mark and struggled from then. I didn’t really have a desire to finish it but I just pushed through it anyways. The whole book was more about Macey than Oliver. There was definitely something missing, i felt like there wasn’t much of a storyline. Was still a cute book though.

That cliffhanger though!? I’m sooo excited for Logan and Emiline’s story. I’ve been anticipating their book since the first book. I need to know more and can’t wait for their book!!

Thankyou to Jenn and her team for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Read this book because you will get the perfect dose of:

* golden retriever billionaire
* found family
* epic girl gang friendship
* roommates + forced proximity
* no third act breakup
* swoony with the right amount of spice

This is the third book in this series and the first one I read. Did it get me all excited to read the first two books? Yes. Why? Because the writing style, the softness with the perfect smile and n number of moments that made me swoon. I want them more.

Macey wanted to be a chef but when she got pregnant at just 16, she knew she had to give up her dream. But she wants to give her daughter the life she deserves. She decided to move to a small town, for a fresh start, to break off old strings and build connects that keep her and her daughter safe and happy. What she didn’t know is that she will end up meeting her “seat husband” after 5 months, only this time he wants to know more.

Oliver does what his heart wants. What his heart doesn’t want? Is to settle down. To find someone who makes him stay. But Macey is what’s different this time. Her and her daughter. Because know Macey and Kenzie are living with him in his New York Apartment and all he wants to do is give everything.

I number of times I have swooned throughout this book is crazy, the perfectly created tension and spice just wanted me to read more and more. This book is the perfect example of why I like books that I like (books that aren’t dark romance) the build up, the connection, the efforts, falling for not only her but also her daughter. THE SWIFTIE MOMENTS. I enjoyed this book throughout and this is one of those books that I want to revisit, that I want to hold on to, the book that I want on my shelf.

I swear, if Macey and Oliver aren’t the SWEETEST couple!! I loved their transition from friendship to relationship SO much. 🫠

I also love the way the group embraced Macey and Mackenzie - it was just so special. I wanna be a friend in their girl squad…umm, hello, they do TACO TUESDAY like it’s a religion! A-freakin-Men 👏🏽 The group chat/text exchanges are everything and I loved the banter so much.

The dark side in me wanted *a little more* conflict and pull but if you’re looking for a swoony romance that’ll give you all the heartwarming feels, THAT FIRST FLIGHT is THE ONE. 🤌🏽

OLIVER. FORD. 🥹 You sir have become my favourite Ford brother of the gang ❤️

The transition of playboy Oliver into relationship/dad figure Oliver was so amazing to read, and I think he and Macey made each other even better people than they already were 🥹 The way that their love story was written also showcased a growth in Jenn’s writing which has only been amazing!

Oliver’s acts of services, his support and love for Macey and her daughter Mackenzie made me so happy, and had me laughing and crying all the time 🥹 and Harry Potter marathons? I mean could they not be more perfect!

Mackenzie is the smartest and probably one of the best kid characters I’ve ever read, she’s so brilliant 🥹

Macey is the definition of a resilient, strong and incredible mom, and despite her circumstances has given her daughter the best life and opportunities she could. Oliver and her are the sweetest little family, and that ending at Kenzie’s birthday had me sobbing😭

Can I say I loved Macey more than Oliver and not get punched in the throat? LOL.

Okay Okay- hear me out- give me a chance to explain.... I liked Oliver but, I think because I read all the brothers back to back I was to far gone for Marc. This book is good!! I really enjoyed reading- and I really really loved the FMC... Macey Evans reminds me so much of my sister it's not even funny.
This book has so much fun. So much love. So much hurt. It really hit all the emotions while reading it.

Oliver Ford is a blogger- and the only Ford brother that doesn't want to flaunt his money. He chose to take his inheritance and travel the world. With only his camera, and a different lady at every stop he's never settling down and he is living life to the fullest. Until he meets his "seat wife". After she gets off the plane, and he is looking for her... he knows he lost his chance and he will never see her again....
((I really loved how Jenn wrote his character... how he was so full of life. I feel like when Oliver Ford decides he's all in- he dang well means it.))

Macey Evans is running from a crappy past, and even worse parents. She mustered up the last amount of courage she had to take her 8 year old daughter and move on where she could truly be the mother she was meant to be. Maybe I loved her so much because I was a teen mom. Maybe it's because like I said, I see so much of my sister in her. The GRIT, the DETERMINATION, the SADNESS in thinking you are screwing everything up, when really you're just doing the best you can.
MACEY EVANS MADE THIS BOOK. Agree to Disagree but, the way Jenn wrote her character was everything thing to me.

There were many times I got emotional just putting myself in her situation because it was so raw reading it on the pages.

GREAT BOOK.
This author is a new to me Author- and I started with That First Night.
I enjoyed all three books and can't wait to continue to read more of her. Thanks for the opportunity to read and review!!!

Jenn has a way with words and I really enjoyed her writing style. She made it so easy to fall in love with her characters that I was rooting for them from the get-go until the very end. This was my first book of hers, but certainly wouldn’t be the last.

Macey has a strong passion for cooking and has always wanted to become a chef. She had to give up chasing her dreams when she found out she was pregnant. Her daughter MacKenzie comes first. Being a single mom was tough, she was scrutinised by her parents for every single move she made. After years of it, she had enough. She took Kenzie and caught the first flight to New York, to start fresh.

When an absolute gorgeous specimen of a man Oliver took the seat next to her, the world fell away. His presence quickly calmed her fears and gave her something she lost a long time. Hope.

Oliver is a very successful blogger, who enjoys travelling and experiencing everything life has to offer. He never thought of settling down, but Macey made him want things he’d never wanted before. Five months later, the universe brought them together again.

I absolutely adore their relationship. Their open communication was so refreshing, their banter was hilarious and their chemistry was impeccable. The way Oliver went out of his way to help Macey and Kenzie was so heartwarming and sweet. He has their backs no matter what and he encourages them to be themselves. He is truly what dreams are made of, so genuine, caring and loving.

The character growth in this book was epic, especially for Macey. To see her go from second-guessing her every decision to finally coming to her own was everything. Oliver played a major role in helping her land her dream job, rebuild her confidence and establish connections in a new city. They deserve the world and I’m so glad they found love and happiness in each other. Jenn honestly did a phenomenal job with their story and I highly recommend it.

Oliver and Macey were so sweet, with their instant connection. With fate having to intervene, their chemistry was still so undeniable.

Oliver’s relationship with Macey’s daughter; Mackenzie was the so adorable. Mackenzie was an adult trapped inside a young child. The way those two interacted was the second relationship that this book provided in such a beautiful way.

Oliver was such a bright green flag, despite the holy hotness and filth that comes out his mouth in those hot-as-hell spicy moments! Macey is damn lucky.

There were so many moments that truly made this book, but that ending! It was just so damn perfect.

Where do I even begin! This book was soo good!! I loved the first two books in this series, but this one is my favorite out of the three!

OLIVER. FORD 🫠

Macy and her daughter, Mackenzie, are leaving Montana for a new start in New York. On the flight they get separated from each other and Macy finds herself sitting next to Oliver, a travel blogger. They talked the entire flight and had an unexplainable connection.

Months later while Macy is working at a restaurant Oliver walk in and through conversations finds out that Macy wants to be a chef. He also finds out after meeting Mackenzie briefly that Macy is a single mom. Because of Oliver traveling a lot, her offers Macy his place to stay in NYC so she can try and pursue her career in the culinary world.

Once they are in New York, the connection made between Macy and Oliver is undeniable and sparks fly! Oliver and Kenzie’s relationship was the freaking sweetest and had me sobbing at the end!

Oliver is the biggest green flag and had me swooning the entire time!

Jenn McMahon does it again with a spicy, swoon worthy novel. I fell in love with Macy instantly and could absolutely relate. But Oliver….oooofff 😮‍💨 he is my new favorite book boyfriend obsession and I’m determined to find one of him in real life.

“A fleeting sunset is proof that no matter what happens during the day, or how bad it was, every day can end beautifully, leaving behind whatever weighed you down”

That quote right there-is everything!!! 🤌

Macy is a young single mom who has lived with narcissistic parents her entire life and is determined to find a better life herself and daughter McKenzie. On a flight escaping her toxic life a handsome man sits next to her who makes her feel instantly calm and makes her laugh. With the hustle of getting off the plane they never exchange phone numbers. But fate was in their favor and several months later their paths cross. Not only do their paths cross but an unexpected opportunity is given to Macy & her daughter and she takes a leap of faith to move to the big city of New York to chase her dreams as a chef.

“No more rock bottoms, dragonfly. Welcome to the Top of the Rock. This is where you stay for a good time.”

This story will brighten your day no matter what you’re going through in life. And this review is coming from a woman who is in the thick of a nasty divorce from a narcissist…simply this book is exactly what I needed. Jenn has an incredible way of grasping your attention from the beginning and leaving you with wanting more.

The amount of spicy level this book contained…phew it was good is ALLLLLL I have to say! 😮‍💨🤌

It was heartwarming, humorous, witty, spicy and romantic all in one. I loved every minute of this book and couldn’t recommend this book and her entire series more.

Oliver and Macey are both wonderful characters in their own right, but together I absolutely loved them. Oliver is such a walking Green Flag. He meets Macey on a flight where he deems her his “seat wife” and even though they lose tough for a while, he can’t get her out of his head. Until she is there in a small town and he convinces her to move her and her daughter to New York as his roommate to helps her achieve her dreams. He is so swoony, I swear.

I honestly adored Macey too! She is so resilient and such a good mom, and had such a desire to do the best for her daughter. I love the bond Oliver and MacKenzie share as well, and I absolutely melted for how cute they were together.

Everything about this book just made me fall in love with this world and these characters even more than I already was. This entire series is one you need, and I will recommend it until forever!

Instant ♾️ star read for me! Everything about this book has me so obsessed. Macey and Oliver and my idea of a perfect couple.

We follow Macey and Ollie. These two meet on a plane and promise to exchange numbers once they get off the plane, however they end up losing each other in the airport. 5 months later Ollie walks into a bar and finds the girl who he hasn’t stopped thinking about in the last 5 months.

Macey is a single mom who bought a one way ticket to a better life for her and her daughter. & Oliver is a solo traveler who explores the world and the women in each city he ends up in, that’s until he meets Macey and everything changes.

I loved the MMCs in this book so much & the chemistry they have is off the charts. These two end up living with each other and my god the tension. The burn was slow but was it ever worth it… he might crawl to her 😉

Mackenzie is the sweetest little girl & the relationship she created with Ollie melts my heart. Their entire family dynamic is unmatched 🩶

Overall this was such a well rounded plot that had me going through the emotions. I will be recommending this book to every single person I know. Trust me when I say you need to pick up this read.

THIS IS THE BEST ONE SO FAR I KID YOU NOT. Oliver is sooooo dreamy like how a guy can be this dreamy beats me but Ollie has me!!!! The First Flight once again proved how of an amazing writer Jenn is and how extraordinary this universe is. Once you start a book in the Firsts in the City series you can’t stop until you finish, like you’re hooked so bad by the story that it feels like you’re mesmerized by it.

Oliver Ford has always been the more adventurous brother out of them all, always traveling to a new spot for his blog but also always alone. He’s never had any wish for commitment or to settle down but all of that slowly starts to change with one person, Macey Evans, the woman he had a meet cute with on a flight and disappeared right after. Now 5 months later, he’s found her and when Macey tells him about her plans to move to NYC and become a chef, he offers to help her out with a job opportunity and somewhere to live, in his apartment. But Macey doesn’t come alone, at the age of 24 she already has a 8 year old daughter, but Oliver has no problem whatsoever with that.

The single parent trope always does it for me, no matter how it’s presented, and this time around with a teen mom, I love it once again. Macey had her daughter at 16 with her high school boyfriend who abandoned her the second he found out about the baby and with parents that’s the definition of controlling. So Macey has definitely not been dealt the easiest hand when it comes to life, but still she shines through it all and works hard to give her daughter the life she deserves. She’s such an inspiration and I’m so glad that Mackenzie’s wish came true, iykyk. 🥹

- Single Mom
- Chance Encounter
- She’s a wanna be chef/He’s a blogger
- Close Proximity
- He Falls First
- Slowburn

This is the third book in the First in the City series, but can be read as a stondalone with little spoilers of the previous books.

OH MY GOSH, this book had me so deep in my feels, but I loved every minute of it. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, I couldn’t put it down. Oliver is everything, he is literally the sweetest man I’ve read in awhile. He was so supported of Macey and everything she wanted to accomplish and the relationship he developed with Mackenzie was so incredibly sweet.
I loved them, I loved this book and I think you should give it a chance if you enjoy any of the tropes I listed above.

When I was applying for the ARC I knew that I was going to like this book, but boy how wrong was I because I truly A D O R E D it. It was a perfect romance book without a third act breakup that happens so often in books, and that’s what makes it even more special.

It is definitely a slow burn, something I haven’t read in a long time, but still draws you in, grasps tightly and doesn’t let go.. just like Oliver does to Macey once he sees her again, without truly realizing it.

From the get go they both hit it off and have a really nice banter, with their text messages included. There wasn’t really a time where I was disappointed with Oliver because what he selflessly does for Macey and Mackenzie is simply beyond me. He truly is a golden retriever and deserves to be called a book HUSBAND because he surpasses the boyfriend title with his deeds. And when it comes to Macey, she reminded me a lot of my mother because she also wanted what is best for me and tried so hard to make me be proud of both of us, which I am.

I don’t even know where to begin🙃 This book is EVERYTHING. Oliver Ford is such a cinnamon roll and softie for Macey and I was here for it. I loved the first 2 books in this series, but this takes the cake for my favorite for sure🥹

Macey Evans is leaving small town Montana behind to start a new life for her and her daughter. She meets Oliver on the plane, but then loses him when they get off the flight. Fast forward to Oliver closing up Marc & Avery’s house in the mountains for a storm, and he runs into none other than Macey.

Macey is trying to be a chef in NYC, and Oliver wants to help her get there. Hence how they end up as roommates🙃

The love between these two was amazing to witness. Macey has struggled in her life, and Oliver does everything possible to reassure her and encourage her. He is so sweet with her and I cried so much during this because I related to Macey so much.

I can’t wait for you all to read this!!! It was so good and is my new favorite book by Jenn. She freaking killed this one and I can’t wait for y’all to get your hands on this!!!

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!!
