“Set in Montana's breathtaking Big Sky Country and packed with intense, hard-hitting action, Out for Blood reaffirms Ryan Steck’s prowess in the thriller genre, demonstrating once again why his character, former Marine Raider Matthew Redd, is a force to be reckoned with. If you're looking for action, this one’s coming in hot!" ― Jack Carr, former Navy SEAL Sniper and #1 New York Times bestselling author of the James Reece Terminal List series

From the Real Book Spy, Ryan Steck, comes another riveting thriller full of “gutsy action and nonstop mayhem” (James Rollins) in the series that New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille describes as “intense, brutal, and faster on the draw than a gunslinger.”

Winters in Montana can be deadly, but it wasn’t the cold that was killing Matthew Redd . . .

Gavin Kline, executive assistant director of the FBI’s Intelligence Directorate, is escorting a high-value prisoner with the intel to bring down a global conspiracy when their plane comes under attack. In the aftermath, much of Kline’s team is dead, but he recovers a phone from a member of the hit team that reveals another attack is imminent. This time they’re going after the man who was instrumental in capturing the prisoner and foiling their Matthew Redd.

When Redd learns he’s in the crosshairs, he sends his family into hiding and heads for the mountains. He might be outnumbered, but the hit team will have to hunt him down on his own turf. With a snowstorm bearing down on Montana and no help in sight, Redd fights for survival in the harshest conditions. But when they take the fight to his hometown, he’ll need all his allies at his back to save what he holds most dear.

A page-turning thriller set in the heart of Montana, Ryan Steck’s third action-packed Matthew Redd novel is perfect for fans of the hit show Yellowstone and readers of C. J. Box and Jack Carr.

Matthew Redd is settled in with his small family, living in a trailer while his house is being built. Winter in Montana is not a very pleasant climate.

Anton Gage, member of the 12, and currently singing like a canary is being transported toa high security cell. Someone isn't pleased with his singing and takes action to make it stop.

Redd spends the majority of the book trying to evade, and pick off a kill squad which has tracked him to the mountains.

Matthew Redd is back and trying to rebuild his home. Out for Blood by Ryan Steck is the third book and in this one some things will be resolved and some things will not. This book is a page turner with some nailbiting involved, winter can be a lovely time of year, unless there are some bad guys gunning for you. If so it would be great to be able to rely on family. Can Matthew do this? Or is he too stubborn to ask for help? Well you have to wait until June to find out. But I bet you won't be disappointed. Thanks to Tyndale House, Edelweiss and Edelweiss for letting me read this advance copy.

Good summer fun!! I appreciate that the third book tied up so well. The book moves fast and has lots of action, and leaves you with a few outs of where the story could go next. Overall I enjoyed this part of the story, and I was really happy with the pace and content.

Out For Blood is the third book in the Matthew Redd series, and once again the action is furious and the body count is high as Redd defends himself and his family against a rogue government hit team. The book is a continuation of the story arc involving a shadow government group called The Twelve, but it can be read as a standalone as the author provides enough information from prior books to get the reader up to speed. The character of Matthew Redd is clearly an homage to Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp ( the names are too close to be a coincidence), and author Ryan Steck does justice to the character, as Redd is a force to be reckoned with throughout the series, but especially in this book. The book starts with a bang (literally) and doesn’t let up, as the reader is expertly transport to the Montana mountains in blizzard conditions as Redd faces off against multiple enemies. The battle scenes can be a little drawn out, and the interaction with Redd and his wife can be a little sappy, but overall this is another entertaining book in the series, and I look friars to the next installment. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost, I want to thank NetGalley, Tyndall Fiction Publishers, and author Ryan Steck for an ARC of Out For Blood which enabled me to write an unbiased review.

This is the third installment in The Twelve Trilogy. However, I read it as a stand alone and was not confused at all. Kudos to Mr. Steck for writing in a way to make this installment enjoyable without having read the previous two books.m

Matt Redd is a the protagonist and the character development for him is good. The other characters are not developed, however. Decker and Kline are interesting and important characters yet they are not multi dimensional.

The plot is unique and very original - a cabal of twelve billionaires who influence governmental policies in the USA- the shadow government.

The opening scene starts with a bang and the thrills and chills keep coming throughout the book! The ending scene was also thrilling as it depicted the final fight. However, is very drawn out; battling sequence was 20% of the book. Twenty percent! 😳 Extreme suspension of disbelief is necessary.

The fight also became very implausible. The good guys did not call in reinforcements, which tested credibility; they knew the force and power of the mercenaries, yet other agencies were not called in? No highway patrol, no FBI tactical operatives. 🤔 Also, the “real” DHI should have sent in a swarm of agents.

Overall, fun and exciting with a lot of action and tension!

Consider this quote: “Chad Beaudette peered through the objective lens of a Schmidt & Bender PM II High-Power 5-46x54 scope and surveyed the results of his handiwork. The 25x59-millimeter HEDP -High-Explosive, Dual-Purpose- round, which he had only a moment ago fired from his XM109 Anti-Material payload rifle, had streaked across the flat landscape and unerringly found its target. Although the charge in the twenty-five millimeter round - more a miniature grenade than a bullet - was small…”

Not only is this bizarrely technical writing for a fictional book, none of these details matter. None. Scary guy, fancy gun, big bullets. We get it. That type of jargon addled writing is ingrained into the DNA of this book.

And look, there is an audience for this type of writing, I get that. If you get hyped about 25x59 millimeter HEDP bullets, then you’ll probably really like this book and I hope you have a great time reading it.

But for me, it was like pausing a developing story every 2-3 paragraphs to listen to Charlie Brown’s teachers talk. I can’t power through that for too long. This get’s the standard 2/5 stars that all my DNF’s get.

I heard Ryan Steck on Jack Carr’s podcast a couple of years ago and thought, what the heck, I’ll give him a shot. Three books and one novella later, he’s one of my favorite thriller writers. The characters are real, relatable, subtly developed, and approachable. As muck as I love other fictional characters in this genre, if James Reese or Mitch Rapp were real, I’m not sure I’d enjoy having them over for dinner. That’s not true with Steck’s protagonist Matthew Redd. If he existed, he could be your friend.

The other compelling part of this is the real morality of the characters and their creator. I’ve now read three and a half books without so much as a single profanity other than “hell” used in an appropriate context. Not that I’m a prude, but that’s refreshing. Sure, there a bad guys getting shot left and right - it’s a page-turning thriller - but there’s a good/evil compass that never fogs up.

I highly recommend this and Steck’s other books. He’s worth a follow.

Out for Blood by Ryan Steck is the first book I’ve read from this author. It was an explosive experience of danger, espionage and mystery. I felt like I was watching the newest blockbuster spy movie of the year, it was so intense. I would have given it a 4.5 Stars except for a couple of scenes that where a bit too graphically violent. Mission Impossible meets Yellowstone. I’m looking forward to the next book in Summer 2025.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions expressed are completely my own.

An addictive thriller series! When Matthew Redd learns a team of skilled killers is heading to Montana to eliminate him, he sends his family and friends away intent on taking care of the hired killers himself. On a mountain during a blizzard, Redd just needs to survive…but will that be enough? Not only is his survival on the line, but everyone he loves becomes caught in the mercenaries’ crosshairs. This series is a modern-day Wild West thriller involving national intelligence threats and military-level attacks. I loved this book and can’t wait for the 4th in this series!

LOVED THIS SERIES!

I’ve read all three of the Matthew Redd thrillers and this is by far one of the best new series in the genre that I’ve read in a long time. Book three closed out this chapter in the series, I cannot wait to see where the protagonist Matthew Redd goes next. I sure would like to see more of Aaron Decker, he’s quite a character. Well done Mr Steck

Jammed packed with action from start to finish. Like there's no time to catch your breath! Really good finale to the first two. Definitely the best one so far. My only small complaint is sometimes the story is just a little too unbelievable because the volume of things happening to one person. The number of coincidences don't always feel natural. But it's not enough of a complaint to take away a star. Such good, thrilling action!

My eyes could not scan the action scenes fast enough in Out for Blood by Ryan Steck. The author did an amazing job of creating a wild puzzle, then placed Redd and his enemies into realistic scenarios that ratcheted the suspense. Emotions ran high and egos placed innocent lives in jeopardy. A few scenes almost made my heart stop with worry for Matty, Lucas, and Rubble the rottweiler. I didn’t know who would survive the story.

With lines like “…looking like a pint-sized Eastwood from an old spaghetti western…” I had a few laughs while enemies and friendlies dropped like flies. This is not comedy, but an ex-Marine Raider cowboy who cherishes his family and an arsenal of trained operatives gives Out For Blood an adrenaline rush that is unmatched.

I love the survivors’ guilt aspect that came back from the first book to parallel the lives of Redd and his father. Trust me, this is an incredible thriller and a fun read.

Fans of the following will love Out for Blood: action, suspense, thriller, action, western, military thriller, Christian fiction, assassins, father-and-son bonds, doomsday stories, anything Mission Impossible, I received this book through Net Galley and was not required to give a positive review.

This was a fun book to read, and a solid ending to the first story arc (assuming the author writes more stories). It did not go the way I expected it to go, which is a good thing. It has some good character development in it . It held my interest from start to finish, did get pretty intense at times, and I enjoyed the various levels of technology discussed (introduced) in the book - I thought that the different technology added to the story. Granted, the big "showdown" at the end , hahahah.

I know this book is advertised as "Christian fiction", and I bought my copy at a Christian bookstore, but I do not know how much I agree with this being "Christian fiction." It might be written by a Christian, and I am sure there is probably some kind of "redemptive message" that can be found in it, but I would call it a work of fiction that happens to have a couple of Christians in it.

It was a good book. I had a hard time putting it down. It was a solid ending to Matt's initial story arc. I could see myself continuing to read the series, and I am glad I picked up my own copy of this book. Hopefully the author continues with more stories, because I will for sure read at least the next two, hahahah.

This was an action-packed thriller!

It has some Bourne Identity type vibes because Matthew is an ex-Marine who is being hunted by a government agency because of information he has but because of his particular set of skills he can be significantly outnumbered and still single-handedly take them all down.

It’s definitely a ‘hero’ story.

I hadn’t realized this was book three when I read it. They give some context to where they’ve been before and what has led Redd to be in the current situation. I was able to enjoy the book and understand everything without having read the first two, but considering how good this one was, I think I would recommend reading from the beginning. I think there was definitely some character development for Matthew and his wife and Matthew’s relationship with his dad that I didn’t fully get with just starting here.

If you like thrillers with lots of tactical maneuvering, danger, and seemingly-impossible-to-survive-lone-man scenarios, this is definitely the book for you!

The setting of this book adds a lot to the story. It takes place largely in Montana near Matthew’s ranch. He’s been living there with his wife and their infant son, trying to get away from it all. But ‘it all’ finds him when a federal prison transport is attacked and the prisoner is killed. A prisoner who had confessed a lot of secrets to Matthew. He knows they need to silence him next.

So using the woods and the ensuing winter storm to his advantage, Matthew lures the enemy team into his territory where he can set up a better defense. He knows the terrain and can handle the weather. Of course he also has the help from his stealthy steed, Remington, and loyal Rottweiler, Rubble. (Don’t worry, they don’t die.)

If you were to have read the previous books I think this ‘enemy’ would have been set up more. It’s a cabal of sorts, called the Twelve. So if you want more backstory on the bad guys, I think they are what is ‘discovered’ prior to this book. The next book looks to introduce a new ‘bad guy’ so I’m thinking the Twelve’s story is wrapped up in Out for Blood.

My main criticism is something pretty minor but maybe if Steck reads this, he will take note. I am a big fan of nicknames, at least in real life. I don’t see them used very effectively in a lot of books I read. I’m still pondering if nicknames in books makes sense or if it feels too contrived. But the way Steck uses names/nicknames in this book was a bit too much.

Matthew is the main character. He sometimes goes by Matt. That’s fine. Only a few people are allowed to call him Matty, but those few characters are also pretty much the only other characters in the book. Also his son’s name is Matthew but they call him Matty. You don’t call a man and the junior the same name. My husband is Michael, his dad is Mike. They don’t both go by Mikey, that would be weird.

So we have Matty and Matty. Then Matthew’s friend is Mikey. Then we have Martin who goes by Marty. And then we have Stephanie who he knew by the name Sammy. Do you see where I’m going with this? We need some different creativity or just less creativity. Not everyone needs a nickname.

Also, one more note on little Matty. If he still has regular hearing in the next book I’m going to be amazed because what he just went through in this book probably should have destroyed his ear drums. But I’m guessing we’re going to need to sidestep this reality (which is totally fine).

Recommendation

I would definitely recommend this book, for sure if you like authors like Jack Carr, Brad Thor, or C.J. Box. I have not read any of these other authors yet, but they’ve all endorsed Ryan Steck and I think his writing must be similar in themes and content— i.e. guns and military and tactics, etc.

I read a wide variety of books so these kind of books are ones I do enjoy, but aren’t necessarily my bread and butter. So even if you don’t typically read special-ops mission books, I think you would still enjoy this one. There is some technical gun stuff, but everything is very easy to follow and it’s a clean book, especially considering the military/violence aspect which I appreciate.

If you like this kind of book, I would also recommend Steven James’ Travis Brock or Patrick Bowers series.

If you hate books with guns and show-downs, you might want to pass on this one.

[Content Advisory: no swearing or sexual content; a lot of violence, a little gore]

“Out for Blood” by Ryan Steck is a sddition to the Matthew Redd series, set against the rugged backdrop of Montana’s Big Sky Country. Steck’s narrative prowess is on full display as he weaves a tale of survival, betrayal, and relentless action

My only criticism has to do with comparison of characters to modern day actors, and it can be challenging keep all the moving parts and people in mind as the story advanced.

The novel follows former Marine Raider Matthew Redd as he faces a new kind of enemy. The stakes are higher than ever when Redd learns he’s the target of a skilled hit team, leading him to send his family into hiding and retreat to the mountains. Steck masterfully portrays Redd’s tactical expertise and survival instincts, which are put to the test in the unforgiving Montana winter.

Steck’s writing is evocative, capturing the isolation and beauty of the setting while maintaining a breakneck pace. Redd’s complexity and resilience shines through as he navigates the treacherous terrain, both physical and emotional.

The plot is tightly constructed, with twists that are both surprising and plausible. Steck’s attention to detail in the action sequences is particularly noteworthy, creating vivid and heart-pounding moments that are both cinematic and believable.

“Out for Blood” is a testament to Steck’s ability to balance character development with action. It’s a novel that not only thrills but also delves into the psyche of a warrior pushed to his limits. Fans of the genre will find much to admire in Steck’s latest work, which confirms his status as a force in thriller writing.

Steck has delivered a novel that is a thoughtful page-turner as well as an exploration of the human spirit under pressure in this third installment to the series.

Ryan Steck’s latest—Out for Blood—feels like a mashup of C.J. Box, Jack Carr, and Vince Flynn, and there is nothing wrong with that. Matthew Redd finally has his man—Anton Gage—and he is singing like a canary. And people with secrets don’t like snitches. Now that the conspiracy known as the Twelve is out of the bag, the “Twelve” are being hunted by an unknown force, including Redd and anyone who’s unfortunate enough to be near him. Facing a fierce blizzard and multiple teams of killers with a seemingly unlimited budget and options, the only thing that matters to Redd is keeping everyone he cares about safe.

The growth Ryan Steck has shown over three books is apparent. The plot and his writing are tighter, crisper, more fluid. Taking more of a chance than the previous books, Steck adds a second storyline that doesn’t feel forced or out of place but, is natural and plausible. The action scenes were wildly exciting.

Steck’s growth is also notable in the development of his characters—new and old. He introduces us to a new character sparingly and with great effect. I can easily envision this character in his own series.

The dialog between characters is also much improved especially between Redd and his loved ones. Previously the dialog felt hokey and out of place. Like Steck was trying to soften Redd‘s image and convey how much he cares but ended up sounding like something out of The Andy Griffith Show. In Out for Blood, Steck is able to convey Redd’s emotions without the aw-shucks, corny lines. The change made Out for Blood a more enjoyable read.

Give Ryan Steck a read if you haven't already and hold on.

My sincere thanks to Tyndale House Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Out for Blood!

OUT FOR BLOOD by Ryan Steck

The modern Western is a thing for a reason. It appeals to us in a unique way that few other subgenres can. And then there’s Ryan Steck’s Matthew Redd, the protagonist of his most recent work, OUT FOR BLOOD. To that end, take the modern Western and throw in band steroids and a dose of gamma radiation. It’s a grounded thrill-ride from page one.

If you loved Steck’s prior installments in this series, I assure you that you will not be disappointed. Steck retains his signature receipt of a brutal pace from the start balancing white-knuckled kinetic action and a flesh and blood protagonist whose family is his world. That’s what sets this series apart from the herd—a genuine human story of a man who had finally found all that he’s ever wanted, family and life in Big Sky Country, and a heart pounding tale with twists and turns from page one and only let up with the final period. More than that, the nuance with which Steck weaves the tapestry of the Matty Redd universe is just masterful. Story lines that began two books ago conclude, as new themes begin. So many layers masterfully woven together and the continued development of characters that have now transcended from fiction to family.

And if OUT FOR BLOOD doesn’t satisfy your hunger for Matty Redd action, the hardback includes his Christmas themed novella REDD CHRISTMAS. Perfect for the holidays once you’ve loaded up on eggnog and watched DIE HARD a couple of time.

So good. It’s as if the literary genetics of C.J Box and Bard Taylor have been combined to give the world Matty Redd. Clear your calendar and brew a pot of coffee. Trust me, you’re going to need it. You’re going to be up past your bedtime.

The Matthew Redd series is getting better and better. Having read the first two, I found Out for Blood hard to put down and always looked forward to picking it up again each time. What I especially enjoyed is how Steck takes us into each scene and makes us feel we're in it, whether it's clawing our way out from under masses of snow, or a shoot out in a burning county place station, or hand to hand combat on the edge of a roof. It makes the book that much more enjoyable and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

This story is a follow on from the second one, so best read that first. Anton Gage is being transported to a high security courthouse so he can give evidence to the Grand Jury in the hopes of lightning his sentence. However, everything goes wrong and the men chasing Gage are soon after Redd because he knows too much. Redd's enjoying lunch with his family and best friends and has to make a quick escape to get ahead of the bad guys.

One might suggest we spend too much time in the snow and another minor plot line comes up which I questioned whether it was required unless it features in the next story but the suspense keeps you turning pages even if a litter slower in the middle of the story.

The last third of the story hums with tension, suspense and action and is fabulous fun to read.

I'm looking forward to the next instalment and believe Ryan Steck is onto a winner with the Matthew Redd thriller series. Long may they continue.

I was fortunate to receive an early ebook copy of the story from Tyndale via NetGalley and acknowledge that it's taken me too long to read it. This had no bearing on my review.

Great read as always. Ryan Steck delivers, again. Such an action-packed book that was written with great depth and clarity. I’m a big fan of Matthew Redd. He is a quiet storm so-to-speak.

It was cool seeing everyone come together to help Matt when he needed it most. Definitely gives off the small town vibes where you help people when they are in need. Even at the extent of their own lives and well-being. Everyone needs a friend like Mikey, a dog like Rubble, and a biological dad like Gavin.

The Josiah Strong/Beckah characters were intriguing. I hope in his next book Ryan can explore that a little more. There is still meat on those bones. Especially with cult-like characters.

My only issue with this series is, Emily. There is absolutely nothing wrong with presenting a woman as a strong, intelligent, and capable person, but for me personally, in this setting, it doesn’t add up. She is a Nurse Practitioner and Matthew is a former Marine Raider and by reading you would think she was later too. In this book, her parents and Liz were responsible for her son Junior because she wanted Matt, a trained professional, to know, “he wasn’t alone.” Like having one parent possibly die isn’t bad enough but here she is putting herself in danger as well. Makes no sense. The rationale is bogus. She comes off very naive sometimes. I don’t know, maybe now she will agree to having a “safe room” as Matt has suggested numerous times. It’s okay to be a strong independent woman and sensible as well.

Otherwise, if Ryan writes it, I’ll read it. Can’t wait for next summer.

Winters in Montana can be Deadly, but it wasn’t the cold that was killing Matthew Redd.
I can honestly say I have never read a book where the setting takes place in Montana. This is a Matthew Redd thriller book. I haven’t read any previous books in the series, and this was my first read of Matthew Redd. The book starts with Matthew Redd laying in the snow bleeding out. What an excellent start to a thriller for people to read.
Matthew is a former Marine Raider, however recently he is now a husband to Emily and Matt Jr. He also owns Thompson Ranch and is very happy with his current setup of life. Matthew knows a man named Gavin Kline, Gavin is a part of the FBI and in charge of a man named Anton Gage. Anton Gage was a criminal who was being transported on an airplane. There are a couple of pov’s of multiple people as the plane is wounded in the story, which was interesting to go back and forth. I really liked the story as it is a non-stop action packed thriller from the first page! The story was well written by the author, the characters are resonating with the readers. The setting is described very well, especially the giant snowstorm and Montana as well. I can tell the author did some research and also has either been there himself or did a tremendous amount of research, it shows in his writing!
I loved the ending of the book and I am so happy everything turned out great for Gavin, Matthew, and his family at the end of this book. That was a great ending and I can not wait for the next one!

The third book in the Matthew Redd series is an amazing addition to a fantastic series.

It’s the dead of winter in Montana and Matthew Redd knows how to deal with that, but the killer storm that is coming might be more than he can handle. While he is with his family in Montana his father, Gavin Kline is escorting a very high value prisoner when he comes under attack. The attack then leads Gavin to realize Matthew is the next target. Gavin gets word to Redd that he has a target on his back in time for him to prepare and try to get his family to safety. A snowstorm is about to hit which might make it harder for Matthew to stay alive, or it just might give him the cover he needs to take out those coming for him.

I loved this book! I picked it up after several that lacked what I needed to get me invested in the story and characters. It was incredibly easy to fly through the pages of this story and want to see these characters come out the other side safe and happy. Each new addition to this series finds Matthew in a terrible position and having to someway find his way to safety and make sure those he loves are also safe, sometimes harder than others. With this one it involved almost everyone in town trying to help keep him and his family safe after the biggest attack to come at him. I would recommend reading this series in order to get the most out of it. Readers could pick one and enjoy it but reading all will give the reader the best enjoyment.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The vies and opinions expressed within are my own.

Matthew Redd is living life on his ranch in Montana with his wife, Emily, and son, Matthew Junior. He and Emily are living in a camper while their house is being built. He gets a call from Gavin Kline, his biological father, that a landing plane at an airport has been attacked. It has been a horrifying attack, with most of the air marshals and FBI agents killed.

Gavin is second in command at the FBI. The plane attack killed Anton Gage, one of the members of the Twelve, a group of men determined to reduce the population of the world. And now Gavin is telling Matthew that he is next on the list to be wiped out.

Book #3 in the Matthew Redd series. Ryan Steck continues this character driven, action packed thriller series as Matt works hard to conduct his family life in a manner to make his foster father proud. A Marine Raptor at heart, this story finds him planning to kickstart his life after the major conflicts in Lethal Range, book #2 in the series. Matt & Em have finally cleared the debts left when he inherited the ranch and are planning the rebuild of their home.

During one of the worst winter storms in the history of Montana, Matt receives an SOS from his father. He will respond in the only way he knows how, bringing the good fight to those who would attack the world's population, destroying mollions of people in the name of rescuing the planet. The Twelve will stop at nothing in their quest. Matt has twice interferred with their plans and they have sent killers to stop him. This time they will meet on the plains with few resources available to either side. The story builds tension as readers hold their breath to see what will happen.

Just an FYI for those to whom it matters. This series is rated as Christian. It's get a PG rating for violence but there's no cursing.
