Undrestrøm er en spektakulær, ordløs fantasi over menneskelivet og samhørigheden med kloden. Bogen er flamske Peter Van den Endes debut; han arbejder som naturguide på Caymanøerne, hvor han har fundet inspiration til denne drøm af en bog, der emmer af betagelse over og kærlighed til havet og dets uendelige mangfoldighed – og hvor han har brugt år på at skabe det ekstremt detaljerede sort-hvide værk, der giver mindelser om fx kunstnere som M.C. Escher – men er helt sit eget.

Peter Van den Ende is an artist and illustrator based in Belgium. Previously he worked as a nature guide in the Cayman Islands. The beauty of the sea was his source of inspiration for his wondrous and wordless debut picture book, The Wanderer--A Society of Illustrators, Dilys Evans Founder's Award Winner and named a Best Book of the Year by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Don't read this at night just before you go to sleep as the sketches and the detailed artwork might appear in your dreams and you might possibly drown in it.

I love how thrilling the entire content is. The details in the art is so well done. It reaches the nook and corner of your imagination!

Yes, there's no plot. There are no words. Just a pretty good art sequence that sucks you in a world of black and white dream of illusions.

Keep following the paper boat. Just enjoy what you feel while flipping the pages. Accept your fears, the wonder, the uncertainty, the different emotions that would keep rushing through you when you reach the last page.

It's scary. It's beautiful. It's liberating. It's joyful. It's sad and gothic at times. But most of all it's a celebration of the human mind.

The Wanderer might describe the passage of a little white paper boat across an ocean, from north to south, east to west, increasing fantastical or surreal, and/or the artist himself just wandering across the landscape of his imagination. The work is 76 wordless pages, cross-hatched black and white, pen and ink, mostly large format full pages. It recalls, as other reviews also recognizes, links to other great artists, such as M.C. Escher, David Wiesner, Moebius, or Shaun Tan, who blurbs the book, though this work is without central characters or story such as Tan's also wordless The Arrival. But while it also lacks the kind of "heart" that we see in Tan's book, it is still technically impressive, an instant classic.

I "read" this wordless art fantasy several times.
Each time I had less idea what was going on.
I suppose it was a dream, a really long crazy dream?

When I was younger, I used to dream that I set out in a journey that was not planned at all, and I marveled as I went through beautiful but unknown places: rivers, mountains, the Amazon rainforest. The journey ended when I woke up at dawn. This wonderful book reminded me of such dreams. The art is stunning, and every time I open this book, I notice a new detail that I had not seen before. It is also full of fantastic creatures, for which I have always had a soft spot. Highly recommended for people who enjoy surreal stories.

Talvez tivesse beneficiado de algum texto adicional para explicar melhor os acontecimentos, já que toda a jornada pareceu retirada de um sonho abstracto.

This is a magical story because it has no words, similar to Shaun Tan's 'The Arrival'. This makes it accessible to any child regardless of their reading age, literacy and language. Books like this can appeal to reluctant readers because there is no pressure to understand the words (as there aren't any) and their gain ownership of the story, reading their own tale.

I would discuss the setting of the book - the ocean, and how vast it is. The idea of the sea presents a great element of mystery because so much of it is undiscovered and I really like how van den Ende takes the reader on a journey through it, encountering weird and wonderful things along the way.

Ik was al langer op zoek gegaan naar dit werk in de jeugdafdeling van mijn bibliotheek omdat ik er al lovende commentaren van had gelezen, en vooral ook door het werk van deze illustrator voor Bart Moeyaerts Het hele leven geïnteresseerd was geraakt in dit woordeloze prentenboek voor +10-jarigen. En wat was het de moeite toen ik het eindelijk gisterenavond in handen had en kon genieten van de tekeningen! Die zijn magisch, wat mythisch, krachtig, groots, allemaal in zwart-wit en heel fantasierijk ook.

Vanop een groot schip wordt er een papieren bootje te water gelaten. Ook zonder tekst word je meegesleept op de wereldreis die dit bootje gaat maken. Het zwerft tussen de koraalriffen, mangroves, ijsschotsen, het noorderlicht en vervuilende boorplatforms. En tussen de meest wonderlijke scholen vissen en zeecreaturen. Het zijn stuk voor stuk prachtige tekeningen van zowel de onderwater- als de bovenwaterwereld die veel symboliek verbeelden. Ook de kaarten aan het begin en einde van het boek helpen je op weg. Hoewel je het eigenlijk niet merkt, legt het bootje toch blijkbaar een bepaalde route af.

Van den Ende is blijkbaar afgestudeerd als bioloog en is twee jaar natuurgids geweest op de Kaaimaneilanden in de Caraïbische archipel. Nu weet ik waarom de New York Times dit in 2020 tot een van de 25 mooiste kinderboeken heeft uitgeroepen. En niemand minder dan de wereldberoemde Australische tekenaar Shaun Tan betitelde het als "wonderlijk vreemd en vreemd wonderlijk, een epische droom in minutieus uitgewerkte details." Ik kan het alleen maar eens zijn met deze woorden. Dit prentenboek is gewoon één groot kunstwerk.

Ik zag dit boek voor het eerst in een boekhandel in Potenza, waar de niet-Italiaanse naam van de tekenaar opviel. Ik had geen zin om het boek de rest van de reis mee te slepen (het is nogal groot, zeker als je strak bepakt bent), maar thuis heb ik het meteen besteld. Een Italiaanse versie was nog wel leuk geweest, want er staan geen teksten in dit boek, alleen achterop.

We reizen van de tropen, met zijn mangroves tot de poolzee en alles daar tussenin mee met een gevouwen papieren bootje. De tekeningen zijn betoverend. Ik las dat de tekenaar biologie studeerde en natuurgids was op de Kaaimaneilanden. Dat zie je aan het detail van het zeeleven. Het is een mix van fantasie en herkenbaarheid. Ook de (vriendelijke) voertuigen hebben iets biologisch: een slakkenhuis, of een duikboot met een vissenstaart. De niet-vriendelijke voertuigen zijn dan weer monsterlijker dan de zeemonsters: gigantische zwarte walmen uitstotende stalen oppervlakten.

Maar niet alleen wát er is getekend intrigeert, net zo goed verdient de manier waaróp de aandacht: duizenden, nee, tienduizenden streepjes zwarte inkt maken de zee met zijn golven, waarbij elk golfje bestaat uit een groepje streepjes. Koralen, vissen, wolken, zeemonsters, steden, allemaal hebben ze een eigen streepjesstructuur. Zelfs de duisternis van de diepzee is niet zomaar zwart gekleurd, maar bestaat uit minuscule horizontale streepjes, die nog net te ontwaren zijn.
Soms doet een tekening of compositie vaag aan Moebius denken, maar het is vooral een zeer eigen tekenstijl. Ik vind het prachtig.

Om boek om vaker open te slaan en je weer te wanen in deze prachtige fantasiewereld.

Wędrowiec to właściwie artbook. Niby jest jakiś koncept, który to spina (budujemy papierową łódkę i płyniemy w dziwne miejsca), ale szczerze mówiąc nie ma on jakiegoś większego znaczenia, więc fabuły tu nie szukajcie. W swojej kategorii jest to jednak imponujące i jeśli ktoś lubi takie fantastyczne światy z mozolnie zakreskowywanymi planszami i przyprawiającą o zawrót głowy ilością szczegółów to polecam. Swoją drogą po lekturze przypomniał mi się "Jaś ciekawski" - Matthiasa Picarda i myślę, że ilustracje 3D też by tu świetnie zadziałały

Książka z samymi tylko ilustracjami, w czerni i bieli. Klimatyczna, pokazującą drogę małej papierowej łódeczki. Niepokojące, szczegółowe i trochę nie z tego świata ilustracje. Przypomniała mi o grze komputerowej "Limbo"

Aan boord van een groot schip wordt een papieren bootje gevouwen en te water gelaten. Wanneer het schip uit het zicht verdwijnt staat het kleine bootje er alleen voor. Op weg naar de bewoonde wereld verwondert hij zich over de schoonheid van de oceaan, de prachtige koraalriffen en de enorme variatie aan vissen, zeemonsters en andere dieren. Toch verloopt zijn reis niet helemaal op rolletjes en belandt hij in benarde situaties. Dit maakt de opluchting enkel groter wanneer hij na een lange, vermoeiende reis de geruststelling van de haven en de bewoonde wereld bereikt.

'Zwerveling' is het adembenemend mooie debuut van Peter van den Ende, die werkzaam is als natuurgids op de Kaaimaneilanden. Dit zie je als lezer direct terug in de enorme hoeveelheid aan details die zijn wondere waterwereld bevat. In schitterende prenten vertelt hij het verhaal van een papieren bootje die symbool staat voor durven, vallen en opstaan.

Ik heb het boek inmiddels al drie keer gelezen en weet zeker dat dit een boek is wat ik het komende nog regelmatig cadeau ga doen. De enorme variëteit en de glansrijke uitwerking maken dat je als kleine én grote lezer steeds weer nieuwe aspecten in het verhaal ontdekt. Tijdens het lezen ervoer ik hetzelfde magische gevoel wat ik krijg wanneer ik werk van Shaun Tan in handen heb, en verrek, óók Shaun Tan bleek vol lof te zijn over dit magisch mooie meesterwerk van Peter van den Ende. ✨ Een enorme aanrader, en ik durf wel te zeggen dat dit mijn nieuwe favoriete prentenboek allertijden is. ❤️

This is one of my favourite books of all time. The lack of words means that every interpretation of the book is unique. There isn't a problem that needs to be solved, like most books I have previously read, this book and its story simply exists to enchant the reader and invite them to spend a few minutes in a world not unlike our own.
This book can be used for a range of ages and the illustrations take the reader across the world's oceans, visiting different sea creatures and habitats. The most poignant question for me is: Why did the main character and the ‘Exploratio’ split up if they were to end up at the same destination? Or did the wanderer simply crave the adventure and the experience enough to put himself at massive risk?

A story about how being observant and giving yourself opportunities to truly see and experience the world around you can create the most incredible adventure.

Mysterious and intricate, this wordless book reminded me of Chris Van Allsburg's early work, and it certainly owes a debt to Shaun Tan as well. It got a little overwhelming after a while, though, and there was no strong narrative thread to follow. Fun to get lost in all the detail - I guess that's the point.

Heel eerlijk waren het de twee laatste bladzijdes (waaronder de binnenkant van de achterflap) die me over de 4-sterren-streep hebben getrokken, anders was dit boek hooguit een 3 geworden.
(Kinder)Boeken die internationaal gelauwerd worden, wekken altijd wat argwaan op. En ook hier, tijdens het lezen, vroeg ik me af wat dit nu bijzonder maakte. De tekeningen zijn spectaculair gedetailleerd en doen dan eens Jules-Verniaans dan weer het spul uit nachtmerries aan. Daar wrong bij mij het schoentje: vinden kinderen dit goed? Ik werk dagelijks met kinderen uit de basisschool en weet eerlijk niet of zij dit zouden weten te appreciëren. Er is geen verhaal (ogenschijnlijk), de prenten hebben wel een rode draad maar onvoldoende om als kind 'meegezogen' te worden, de 'personages' zijn griezelig...
Dit is, naar mijn aanvoelen, een boek dat -terecht- om zijn artistieke waarde op een sokkel wordt geheven, echter op eentje met het verkeerde naamplaatje. Want een 'kinderboek'-etiket zou ik er niet opkleven. Noem het gerust -en schaamteloos- een prentenboek-voor-volwassenen. Niets mis mee toch (behalve dan waarschijnlijk de marketing).

This is an amazing illustrated book tracing the journey of a boat along a phantasmagoric global route - where fish may transform into birds and vice versa. Every page is astonishing, and although the book is wordless, it fully conveys the story of this journey of the imagination. The illustrator definitely has a unique talent and patience to create such intricate and minutely detailed drawings. In the end, the message may be that man must undergo a life journey of countless trials and tribulations and trouble, before they finally arrive ¨home¨ - the point at which they were created, a two-dimensional surface shaped into a jaunty 3D boat, seemingly out of thin air.

For a book with no words, this was an incredibly emotional read. On the surface, we follow a little paper boat’s journey across the ocean. However, the detailed illustrations have us confronting incredible and terrifying ocean creatures, witnessing nature’s power and beauty, and bearing witness to humanity’s role in environmental degradation. Easily one of my new favorite books!
